Street Dance Classes in Your City

Every class is taught by a professional street dancer — people who perform and choreograph for a living, not just teach. Choose your city for the local class page: venue, day, time and how to book your first session.

Your First Street Dance Class

Never danced before? Most people in our beginner sessions hadn't either. Here is how a typical class runs, whichever city you join in.

Warm-up and foundations

Every session starts with a groove-based warm-up, then drills the building blocks — bounce, rock, isolations and the locking and popping basics that everything else sits on.

Learn the routine

The heart of the class is choreography: a routine taught in short sections and layered up week by week, set to current tracks. New routines start every half-term, so there is always a fresh entry point.

Level up at your pace

Most cities run beginner and intermediate sessions back to back, with separate children's classes. Drop in weekly or book a block — and when you are ready, there are crews, competitions and performance opportunities.

What Is Street Dance?

Street dance is the umbrella name for the styles that grew up outside the studio — at 1970s block parties in the Bronx, in Los Angeles funk clubs and on shows like Soul Train — where dancers traded moves in circles and battles instead of learning from a syllabus. That heritage is why it looks and feels different from any other dance class: it is built on groove first, technique second.

Everything starts with the bounce and the rock — the basic grooves that lock you into the music — then layers on foundations from each style and, eventually, your own freestyle flavour. No two street dancers move alike, and that is the point. It is also a serious workout: a class burns energy like interval training, but you are having too much fun to notice.

The UK has one of the liveliest street dance scenes in the world — packed battles, world-class crews, and mainstream moments like Diversity winning Britain's Got Talent in 2009 in front of nearly twenty million viewers. Our own competitions have been part of that scene for over a decade, and our teachers come straight from it.

No syllabus, no leotards, no wrong way to groove — foundations, freestyle and attitude.

Hip-Hop

The core groove-based style — bounce, rock and isolations layered over rap and R&B beats. Where most beginners start, and the backbone of our weekly classes.

Breaking

The original street style from the Bronx: toprock, downrock, power moves and freezes. Now literally an Olympic sport.

Popping

Muscle hits that snap on the beat, plus the illusion family — robotics, waving and tutting. Precision work that looks like special effects.

Locking

The funk style built on sudden "locked" positions, points and splits. The most playful of the family — big grins are part of the technique.

House

Fast, fluid footwork and jacking grooves born in the club culture of Chicago and New York. Cardio disguised as joy.

Krump

Raw, expressive intensity — chest pops, stomps and arm swings turned all the way up. The style you reach for when the track demands everything.

Street Dance Facts Worth Repeating

It's an Olympic sport

Breaking made its debut as a medal event at the Paris 2024 Olympics — the styles taught in our classes are now officially elite sport.

The moonwalk isn't new

Michael Jackson's moonwalk is really the "backslide" — a move poppers were gliding through years before Billie Jean came out.

Locking was an accident

Don Campbell invented locking when he froze mid-move and the crowd loved it. The "mistake" became one of the world's biggest styles.

The UK's big moment

Diversity's 2009 Britain's Got Talent win put street dance on every TV in Britain — and class bookings have never looked back.

Street Dance Questions, Answered

Do I need experience to join a street dance class?

No — beginner sessions assume nothing. Routines are broken into short, repeatable sections, and the foundations are drilled every week, so you build up fast even starting from zero.

What should I wear?

Loose comfortable clothes and clean trainers with decent grip. That is genuinely it — no special kit needed for your first class.

Are there classes for children?

Yes — most of our cities run dedicated children's street dance sessions grouped by age, taught by the same professional teachers with enhanced DBS checks. Your city's page lists local times.

How much do classes cost?

Drop-in classes start from around £8 depending on the city, with discounted block bookings available. Exact local pricing is on each city's street dance page.
