Find the groove
Bounce and rock first — the body's basic relationship with a hip-hop beat. Get this and everything else follows; skip it and nothing does.
Foundations and party dances
The moves each era gave the culture — from the running man and the smurf to today's viral steps — drilled as vocabulary you can freestyle with.
The choreography block
The back half of class is a routine: taught in sections, layered week by week, set to current tracks and classics alike.
What Is Hip-Hop Dance?
Hip-hop dance was born with hip-hop itself — at Bronx block parties in the early 1970s, where DJ Kool Herc looped the drum break and dancers saved their best moves for it. Dance is one of the culture's original elements alongside DJing, MCing and graffiti, and it has never stopped evolving since.
What we teach in a hip-hop class is the groove-based side of that lineage: bounce and rock foundations, the party dances every era added — from the 1980s running man to the steps going viral this month — and choreography that stacks it all into routines. It is less about tricks than about rhythm: making your body sit inside the beat.
It is also the most forgiving class for absolute beginners, because the foundation is a groove anyone can find, not a position only trained bodies can hit. Kids' classes run in most cities, and adults range from total novices to dancers keeping their training sharp.
It's not about the tricks — it's about making your body sit inside the beat.
Grooves & Foundations
Bounce, rock, and the core steps every generation of hip-hop dancers shares — the alphabet of the style.
Old School Party Dances
Running man, cabbage patch, the wop — the social steps of the 80s and 90s, still the best freestyle vocabulary there is.
New School Choreography
The commercial, music-video side: sharp, stacked routines of the kind you see behind touring artists.
Breaking
Hip-hop's original dance — toprock, downrock and freezes — taught in our street dance classes and battled in our competitions.
Popping & Locking
The funk styles hip-hop adopted — hits, waves and locks that add texture to choreography.
Cyphers & Freestyle
The circle where it all comes together — confidence-building freestyle in a supportive room, never compulsory, always available.
Hip-Hop Facts Worth Repeating
It started at a birthday party
11 August 1973, 1520 Sedgwick Avenue, the Bronx: DJ Kool Herc plays his sister's back-to-school party — hip-hop's accepted birthday.
“Breaking” is named after the break
Herc looped the drum break because dancers went hardest during it — the dancers became b-boys and b-girls, the style became breaking.
From the Bronx to everywhere
Hip-hop dance is now taught on every continent and battled at world championship level — a block-party invention turned global language.
Every era adds a step
From the running man to viral TikTok dances, party steps are how the culture renews itself — your class vocabulary literally grows every year.
Hip-Hop Questions, Answered
What's the difference between hip-hop and street dance classes?
Street dance is the umbrella covering hip-hop plus the funk styles, house and krump. Our hip-hop classes go deeper on grooves, party dances and choreography specifically — many dancers do both.
I have no rhythm. Honestly, none.
Rhythm is trained, not issued at birth. The bounce-and-rock foundations exist precisely to build it, and beginners who claim two left feet are our favourite before-and-after stories.
Are there children's classes?
Yes — most cities run kids' hip-hop grouped by age, taught by DBS-checked professionals. It is consistently the most popular children's class we offer.
What music do you use?
Everything from golden-era classics to whatever dropped this month — routines rotate regularly, so the playlist never fossilises.
