Class Structure

Beginners Class — 60 Minutes

First 10 min

Loosen and Drop

We start low and easy, rolling the joints and dropping into the knees to find the bounce every street style rides. Ten minutes here and the body quits arguing with the groove.

10–24 min

Groove Before Moves

Street runs on a loose, grounded pulse with a rock riding through it, and until that lives in your knees a step is just a pose. We drill it on its own until it turns automatic.

24–38 min

Foundations

A handful of true foundation steps — the ones the whole vocabulary grows out of — taught unhurried and repeated until they belong to you rather than to the count.

38–50 min

Hits and Attitude

In go the sharp accents, the freezes and the hits that make street actually read as street. This is the point where posture tips over into presence.

50–60 min

Everyone, One Count

Those steps stack into a short routine, then the whole class takes it from the top as a unit — the kind of moment where a roomful of individuals suddenly lands on a single beat.

About Street Dance Classes in Preston

Street dance is really a whole family of styles under one name — locking, popping, house, breaking, hip-hop — and what ties them together is groove: a low, easy pulse with attitude sitting on it. Rather than throw tricks at you on day one, our Preston class hands you that pulse and a few core steps, because a dancer who can move convincingly comes before a dancer who can do one flashy move badly.

Preston knows a bit about individual voices folding into one. The city's Bus Station — that Grade II-listed Brutalist landmark from 1969, all repeated concrete fins sweeping into long curved balconies — takes a hundred identical blocks and resolves them into a single flowing line. A street crew pulls the same trick: separate dancers, separate quirks, all landing together on the beat.

There is a real street scene to plug into locally, too. Fever Dance Company teaches a broad spread of styles to adults and younger dancers across Preston and Fulwood, so the city has a genuine feel for this music rather than a bolted-on fad. Our adult class is the from-scratch weekly route into it: no experience wanted, nothing to sign, a flat £8 on the night. The studio sits in the walkable centre near Fishergate, minutes from the bus station and railway station — and no, there is no tram to worry about.

Why Choose Street Dance in Preston?

Dance to Your Own Playlist

The routines ride the tracks you already have on repeat, so practising never feels like homework. You leave humming the song you just danced to.

Sharp, Not Stiff

Isolations teach each part of the body to move on its own, which is the whole reason street reads as crisp instead of robotic.

Built Around a Crew

You learn in a group and land routines as a group, and the shared count does more for first-night nerves than any pep talk ever could.

Freestyle Without Fear

A low-key circle at the end lets anyone try a few seconds of their own. No pressure, just your first honest taste of freestyle.

Your Street Dance Journey

From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.

01

Your First Few Weeks

What lands first

The bounce, a couple of foundation steps and the nerve to actually commit to them. Once the groove is under you, the choreography stops feeling like a code.

What to wear

Trainers with a bit of give and clothes you can throw shapes in. Nothing branded or special — street was never about the kit.

02

Building Vocabulary

More steps

Party steps, a taste of locking or popping and cleaner isolations start joining into short combinations.

Musicality

You learn to hear the accents in a track and put your hits exactly on them, which is where steps begin to look intentional.

03

Dancing for Real

A full routine

Chunk by chunk a proper piece of choreography comes together, taught slow enough that nobody gets left behind the count.

Finding attitude

The gap between doing the moves and owning them is posture and intent, and that is exactly what the weeks quietly build.

04

Where It Goes

A weekly habit

Most people settle into one session a week, banking steps and watching the same crew sharpen up around them.

Next moves

From assured beginner toward specific styles, freestyle circles or crew choreography — street always has another lane to switch into.

Street Dance in Preston FAQ

Everything you need to know before your first class.

Do I need any experience? +

None whatsoever. The class opens on the groove and a couple of foundation steps and assumes the whole room is brand new to it.

Do I need to be fit or young? +

No — classes run for ages 17 to 75 and we scale the intensity. Street is far more about feel and timing than raw athleticism.

What does it cost? +

A flat £8 on the door each session. There is no membership, no block to buy up front and nothing to sign, so you drop in whenever the week allows.

What should I wear? +

Comfortable clothes you can move freely in and supportive trainers. Leave anything stiff or restrictive at home; there is no dress code beyond that.

Which street styles do you teach? +

We rotate through the foundations — hip-hop grooves, party steps, locking and popping isolations — then build them into choreography, so you get real breadth rather than one narrow style.

Will I have to freestyle or battle? +

Only if you fancy it. There is an optional circle at the end, but plenty of people just enjoy the choreography and never step into the middle. No pressure either way.

Where in Preston are the classes? +

From a central studio near Fishergate, with the exact venue confirmed on booking. We also bring private sessions out to groups across Preston and Fulwood.

Is this the same as Fever Dance Company? +

No — they run their own well-established classes across Preston and Fulwood. Ours is a separate adult beginners' route; if you catch the bug, the city has a healthy scene to grow into.

How do I get there and park? +

The studio is in Preston's walkable centre, a few minutes from the bus station and railway station. There is no tram, but car parks around the centre drop their rate in the evening, so driving in is easy.
