Bachata Classes
The Dominican partner dance the UK can't get enough of — slower than salsa, easier to start, endlessly deep. No partner needed; we rotate.

The basic and the hips
Bachata's basic is three steps and a tap — learnable in minutes. The class then spends its love on what makes it bachata: hip motion and musicality.
Partner connection
Close-hold basics, leading and following, and the first turns. Partners rotate every few minutes, so solo dancers settle in fast.
Combinations and social prep
Simple combinations chain together week by week, building exactly what you need for the bachata room at your local Latin social.
What Is Bachata?
Bachata comes from the Dominican Republic, where it grew up in the 1960s as guitar music for backyard parties — the word originally meant an informal party rather than a dance. For decades polite Dominican society dismissed it as música de amargue, 'bitterness music', and respectable radio barely played it.
Then the world caught up. Artists like Juan Luis Guerra and later Aventura and Romeo Santos took bachata from the barrio to arenas, and the dance travelled with it — a close, intimate partner dance built on a simple three-step basic, a tap, and hips that do the storytelling.
It is now the fastest-growing Latin dance in the UK: most salsa socials run a bachata room, and plenty of dancers who came for salsa quietly admit bachata became the favourite. Because the basic is so learnable, beginners feel like dancers within a couple of classes — then the style rewards years.
Three steps, a tap, and hips that tell the story — the easiest Latin door to walk through.
Dominican
The original: playful footwork, syncopations and improvisation, danced to traditional guitar bachata.
Moderna
The international social style — Dominican roots plus turns and crosses borrowed from salsa. The usual UK starting point.
Sensual
Born in Cádiz, Spain: body waves and close connection, danced to slower, R&B-flavoured tracks. Taught at improver level.
Footwork & Shines
Solo bachata vocabulary — syncopated steps and taps that sharpen your musicality between partner work.
Fusion
Bachata blended with zouk, tango and contemporary influences — where the style is heading next.
Salsa Crossover
Most of our bachata cities teach salsa the same evening — two dances, one night out, same rotating-partner rules.
Bachata Facts Worth Repeating
Radio wouldn't play it
For decades bachata was dismissed in the Dominican Republic as 'bitterness music' — too working-class for respectable stations. It outlived them all.
The name means party
Before it named a music or a dance, 'bachata' simply meant an informal backyard get-together. The dance never forgot it.
It sold out Yankee Stadium
Romeo Santos, bachata's biggest star, sold out Yankee Stadium twice in 2014 — a barrio guitar sound filling a baseball cathedral.
Sensual is Spanish
The sensual style that dominates social floors was created in Cádiz, Spain by Korke Escalona and Judith Cordero — bachata's biggest remix.
Bachata Questions, Answered
Do I need to bring a partner?
No — rotation is standard, so solo dancers are the norm. Come with a partner and you can keep them, or rotate and dance with everyone; both are normal.
Should I learn salsa or bachata first?
Whichever music pulls you. Bachata's slower tempo and simpler basic make it the gentler entry; many dancers start there and add salsa later — usually on the same night at the same venue.
Is bachata always danced close and sensual?
No. Beginners learn Dominican and moderna styling with normal social distance. Sensual is a separate, optional level — and even there, connection is always agreed between partners, never assumed.
What should I wear?
Comfortable clothes and smooth-soled shoes you can pivot in. Heels are common on social floors but completely optional in class.
