Class Structure
Beginners Class — 60 Minutes
The Room Moves as One
We kick off getting everyone going together on a single pulse — the bounce, the shift of weight, the softness in the knees. That pulse sits beneath every street style there is, and this opening stretch doubles as the bit that loosens shoulders and burns off any nerves.
One Style Out Front
A different style takes the lead each week — locking's sharp catch, the hits of popping, breaking's top rock, or the gliding footwork of house — so what you can pull from keeps growing steadily rather than jamming on a lone trick.
Turn It Into a Routine
That week's foundation gets built into a brief piece over funk, hip-hop or house, and by the end you are holding a run of movement that plainly counts as a dance.
Off the Page
Freestyle games with not a step to memorise — quick tests that train you to fire back a move the instant it drops rather than grinding it stiff through repetition.
Circle Up, Wind Down
A cypher that shuts out nobody and cheers the lot of you on, and after it a thorough stretch before you head back out into town.
About Street Dance Classes in Middlesbrough
The encouraging bit first: street is one of the styles Middlesbrough can genuinely point to a scene for. This town has kept homegrown street and hip-hop classes running for years without any fuss or fanfare — a working, week-in-week-out backdrop, and it is exactly the soil this class grows in.
Across a term the sessions travel the whole kit — a fortnight on the snap of locking, then popping, then breaking's groundwork, then the airy footwork of house — because range is the aim, not one buffed party piece. The hip-hop class heads the opposite way, boring down into that single dance's grooves and combinations, and a fair number of Middlesbrough dancers simply keep a foot in each. Teesside has never needed to borrow its swagger, and that shows up plainly in how the floor carries itself.
Children, teenagers and adults each dance on their own floor and are never mixed in together, every band under its own DBS-checked teacher. Street dance classes in Middlesbrough mostly run out of central studios minutes on foot from the railway station, easy to reach on foot or by bus, and anyone driving gets the door and the parking once a spot is held. Grow past the room and the region's jams and youth showcase evenings are the wider stage waiting for you.

Why Choose Street Dance in Middlesbrough?
A Dancer Still Doing It
Whoever is running the room dances themselves, week in and week out — no fill-in on a rota. The local scene set a proper standard long before we arrived, and we hold ourselves to the same line.
The Whole Family Sampled
Over a term you meet locking, popping, breaking and house in turn, so you get a proper taste of the full street family before deciding on a favourite.
The Ages Never Mix
Children, teens and adults each get their own class and their own DBS-checked lead — and this is the one thing Middlesbrough parents ask us about more than any other.
Smoggie Swagger
A large slice of street is simply how you carry yourself, and a Teesside room brings that to the floor unprompted — you can read it in the way the class moves.
Your Street Dance Journey
From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.
Find the Bounce
Day One
Groove and bounce to begin with, then your opening locking points and a spot of top rock. The feel and the nerve show up ahead of the tidiness — that order never flips.
Kit
Trackies, a tee, and trainers with a bit of padding. Freedom to move is the only real rule, though a dash of your own style is always fair game.
Sample the Lot
Reaching Wider
Digging further into popping, into house, and into the first bits of breaking, sorting out which of them your body picks up quickest.
First Improvising
Brief made-up tasks that grow the nerve to move without a set of steps in front of you — the pivot the whole class swings on.
Your Own Flavour
A Personal Mix
Longer improvisation and stiffer choreography start knitting the styles into a blend that reads as recognisably you.
In the Crew
Settled in the cypher and known by name to the regulars — the crew side of the dance, which weighs every bit as much as the steps.
Out Into the Scene
Cleaner Work
Sure across all four styles, steadier when a battle heats up, and putting your own combinations together from scratch.
The Road On
Aim for the regional jams, our showcase evenings, or a wholesale dive into the single style that ended up choosing you.
Street Dance in Middlesbrough FAQ
Everything you need to know before your first class.
Where do the Middlesbrough street dance classes run? +
The adult and teen classes sit in central studios a few minutes' walk from Middlesbrough station, while the younger children's groups are dotted through Linthorpe, Acklam and the suburbs beyond. Once you have a place we email over the studio and where to park, all of it close to a bus stop or an easy walk from the town centre.
What does a street dance class in Middlesbrough cost? +
Each drop-in is £8. There is no membership and no block holding you to anything, so you can turn up on the weeks that suit and leave the ones that do not. Where a studio pins down a steady night, we bring in cheaper blocks for the people in every week.
How is street dance different from your hip-hop class? +
Think of street dance as the big tent and hip-hop as one room inside it. The street class rolls through locking, popping, breaking and house over a term; the hip-hop class digs into that dance on its own — its grooves, its combinations. It is common here for someone to do both and find each feeds the other.
I have never danced a step — can I cope? +
Comfortably. Nearly everyone in the starter room is new, and not a soul walks in able to break. We open on the groove — the plain bounce that lives in any track — and build on from there, never quicker than the room can take.
What should I wear for street dance? +
Clothes you can throw around and sweat in, plus flat trainers with a little give underneath. Half of street is attitude and how you stand, so past the practical stuff, turn out however feels right — nobody is marking the outfit.
Do you teach breaking? +
Yes — the top rock, the footwork and the first freezes turn up in the mix alongside locking, popping and house. Should breaking be the thing that hooks you, we can point you toward the Teesside jams where breakers actually gather.
Which ages can do street dance in Middlesbrough? +
Adults from 17 up share the main class; teenagers and children from around six have separate groups of their own, each with a DBS-checked teacher at the front. Tell us your age bracket on the form and we will drop you into the right one.
Can you bring street dance to a Middlesbrough school or party? +
Absolutely. The travelling side of what we do covers school workshops, birthday parties and youth-group dates right across Middlesbrough, and it stretches out over Teesside to Stockton, Thornaby and Redcar. Pop the venue on the enquiry form and we handle the logistics.
Is there honestly freestyle in class? +
There is, and it is not for show — a chunk of guided freestyle features every week, with a voluntary cypher to finish. That is the moment street dance shifts from copied steps to something of your own, and most people find their way into the circle inside a month or so.
