North YorkshireHow Your Fame Party Runs
First day at the academy
Your choreographer greets the group like new students at New York's most famous performing-arts school and runs a proper 80s dance-class warm-up — stretches, isolations, dramatic gazing into the middle distance.
Learn the routine
Built around the title track: jazz kicks, travelling runs, big open-armed shapes and a street-party section where everyone gets four counts of solo glory. Taught step by step for total beginners.
The filmed showcase
The session ends with a full filmed performance — the group's own end-of-term showcase, complete with a freeze-frame jump finish for the camera.
Why a Fame Hen Do?
Fame is a hen party theme about wanting the spotlight and grabbing it — which, on a hen weekend, is precisely the assignment. The 1980 film follows students at New York's High School of Performing Arts, and its whole language is big dreams, bigger dance numbers and dancing on taxis in the street. It gives every hen permission to be maximally, joyfully dramatic for ninety minutes.
The routine channels the film's classroom-to-street energy: jazz-class kicks and turns, the loose canteen chaos of the Hot Lunch Jam, and the euphoric spilling-into-the-street feel of the title number. Your choreographer builds it so the group moves as one company, with a moment for the bride to take centre stage. Legwarmers and leotards do the costume work; enthusiasm does the rest.
Britain's Fame obsession peaked gloriously in 1982, when the TV series arrived and sent Irene Cara's title song — a flop here two years earlier — to number one for three weeks, with the Kids from Fame album topping the UK chart the same year. Fame The Musical has toured British theatres for decades since, so the theme still sells out singalongs today.
The song flopped in Britain in 1980 — two years later the TV series sent it straight to number one.
Fame
The title track and the routine's centrepiece — jazz runs, giant arms and a chorus the whole street can hear.
Out Here on My Own
The stripped-back ballad moment: a slow, spotlight section that frames the bride before the finale erupts.
Hot Lunch Jam
The canteen jam session — loose, percussive, gloriously chaotic. The warm-up section that gets everyone laughing.
Dancing on the Taxis
The film's street-scene energy: traffic-stopping formations and the feeling that the whole city is your stage.
The Showcase Finale
End-of-term-performance drama — the full-company finish with a freeze-frame jump made for the camera.
The Legwarmer Look
Leotards, legwarmers, headbands and off-shoulder tops: the easiest 80s dress code a hen party will ever agree on.
Fame Facts Worth Repeating
A British director
Fame was directed by Sir Alan Parker, the British filmmaker behind Bugsy Malone and Evita — a New York story told through a British lens.
An Oscar-winning title song
Fame, written by Michael Gore and Dean Pitchford and performed by Irene Cara, won the Academy Award for Best Original Song in 1981.
UK number one — eventually
The single didn't chart in Britain on first release, but when the TV series launched here in 1982 it shot to number one and stayed for three weeks.
The Kids conquered Britain
The Fame TV series ran from 1982 to 1987, and its spin-off album The Kids from Fame topped the UK album chart in 1982 at the height of British Fame mania.
Fame Questions, Answered
How much does a Fame hen party dance class cost?
One flat rate for the whole group: £140 for an hour or £165 for ninety minutes, plus the venue. Any group size, same price — whether it's an intimate class of six or the full extended cast of the hen weekend.
Does the choreographer come to our accommodation?
Yes, if there's room to move — living rooms, party houses and function rooms all work. Otherwise we book a partner studio in your city. Either way, the class comes to the hen weekend rather than the weekend bending around the class.
We're all beginners. Is a Fame routine too ambitious?
Not at all. The film is about students learning, so a class full of beginners is entirely on theme. Everything is taught in short sections at whatever pace the group needs, and the big finish works at every level of ability.
What should we wear — and do you supply costumes?
Eighties dancewear is the classic: leotards, legwarmers, headbands and off-shoulder tops. We don't supply costumes or props, so groups bring their own — most order matching legwarmers online and call the dress code done.
