Get in the Pocket
First we hunt for the groove — that bounce and rock underneath every street style. Long before any named move, your body learns to ride the beat, so nothing you add afterwards ends up stiff or sitting on top of the track.
Two Real Foundations
You pick up a couple of genuine foundational steps and learn to hit them dead on the count. At this stage, clean and simple beats flashy and vague every single time.
Isolations and Edge
Head, shoulder and chest isolations arrive, along with the pauses and accents that give street its swagger. This is the point where plain steps start to carry an attitude.
Stack the Routine
We build a short eight-count from what you have, one section at a time, so the choreography stays learnable instead of piling up faster than you can catch it.
Send It Full-Out
We run the whole thing to the track a few times over, tightening the timing and letting you properly perform it rather than mark it, then bring the heart rate down with a cool-down.
About Street Dance Classes in Oxford
Street dance classes in Oxford land in a city that already takes the style seriously. Body Politic, the hip-hop dance-theatre company based over at the Pegasus Theatre on the East Oxford side, has been putting the culture on real stages for years, while the Old Fire Station on George Street keeps a busy central schedule of adult classes running. The appetite here is genuine, and our beginner sessions give adults a relaxed, no-battle-experience-needed way in.
We start where street actually lives — in the bounce and rock that give the style its feel — then add a couple of honest foundational moves, the isolations and accents that carry the attitude, and finally a compact routine you can genuinely perform rather than half-remember. A professional choreographer teaches it, unpicking the counts slowly and holding the swagger back until the steps are secure, because sharpness only reads once you feel steady.
There is a fitting backdrop to all this, too: Oxford has quietly turned out a run of proper bands — Supergrass, Ride, Foals and Glass Animals among them — so the city knows how movement and a beat belong together. We run street across Oxford and Oxfordshire, from the George Street and Gloucester Green centre to the Cowley Road and East Oxford side, at £8 a drop-in with your venue confirmed on booking. Trainers, comfy clothes and a willingness to look a bit daft while it clicks.

Why Choose Street Dance in Oxford?
Groove before choreography
We chase the feel first, because a routine only reads as street when the body is already riding the beat. Nail that and even simple moves start to look right.
Taught by a choreographer
A professional breaks every count down slowly and adds the attitude last, so you leave with clean, real technique rather than a vague impression of something you saw online.
A city that gets it
From Body Politic to the Old Fire Station, Oxford has a live street and hip-hop culture around you, so what you learn plugs into a real scene instead of sitting in a vacuum.
Central and East Oxford
Sessions run near George Street and Gloucester Green and over the Cowley Road side, venue confirmed on booking, easy to reach by bus or Park and Ride.
Your Street Dance Journey
From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.
Weeks 1–2 — The Groove
Bounce and rock
You spend the first sessions getting comfortable moving on the beat, because the groove is the thing everything else sits on. Skip it and choreography always looks bolted on.
First foundations
A couple of foundational moves land, hit cleanly and on time. Simple and sharp is the whole target here, and it sets the standard for everything after.
Weeks 3–6 — Attitude
Isolations
Head, chest and shoulder isolations bring the control that lets you accent and pause, and the movement starts to look intentional rather than busy.
Musicality
You learn to catch the hits and breaks in a track, so your moves start landing with the music instead of just running alongside it.
Months 2–3 — Routines
Longer sequences
Eight-counts join into longer pieces you can actually remember and perform, and dancing starts to feel like storytelling in movement rather than a list of steps.
Your own flavour
You begin to put your personality into the same choreography everyone else is dancing, which is exactly where street stops being copied and starts being yours.
Ongoing — Keep Building
Freestyle nerve
Short freestyle moments creep in, and improvising in front of others slowly stops being terrifying and starts being the best part of the class.
Drop in any time
At £8 with no term to commit to, you can keep coming as often or as rarely as life allows and just keep stacking skills at your own pace.
Street Dance in Oxford FAQ
Everything you need to know before your first class.
Do I need any dance experience? +
None at all. These are beginner classes built for adults starting from scratch, opening on the groove and a couple of simple foundations. If you can nod along to a track, you have enough to begin.
What kind of street dance do you teach? +
We focus on accessible hip-hop and street-style choreography — groove, foundations, isolations and a routine — with nods to the wider culture. It is a friendly foundation you can later take into Oxford's more specialist crews and workshops.
What should I wear? +
Trainers with a bit of give, plus comfortable clothes you can move and sweat in. Nothing branded or special required — turn up in what you would happily jump around in for an hour.
Is it just for younger people? +
Not remotely. Our adult sessions run a broad age range and are pitched at genuine beginners, so you will not be the only person there learning it fresh. Confidence, not youth, is the only thing that grows.
How much is a class? +
A flat £8 per session, paid on the night. No blocks, no contract and no sign-up fee — come when you can, and pick up wherever you left off.
Where in Oxford are classes held? +
Around George Street and Gloucester Green centrally, and on the Cowley Road and East Oxford side, with come-to-you options across Oxford and Oxfordshire. Your exact venue is confirmed when you book.
Will I have to battle or freestyle in front of people? +
Only as much as you want to. Freestyle creeps in gently and always stays optional and low-pressure — plenty of dancers spend weeks just watching before they join a cypher, and that is completely fine.
Can I book a group or hen party? +
Yes. Friends are welcome in a normal class, and for a celebration you can book a private street dance hen party session choreographed around your group instead of a weekly slot.
Are you connected to Body Politic or the Old Fire Station? +
No — we mention them because Oxford has a real, thriving street scene worth knowing about, but we are an independent class and are not affiliated with them. They are simply great places to see the culture live.
