Class Structure

Beginners Class — 60 Minutes

0–10 mins

Find the Bounce

We start loose and go looking for the beat — knees soft, weight rocking, finding the groove that every street style shares. Get that moving on its own and everything after it comes easier.

10–25 mins

One Style a Week

We do not rush the whole vocabulary in a night. Each session belongs to one foundation — locking, popping, top rock or house footwork — held long enough to stay with you until next time.

25–40 mins

Stack a Routine

The week's style gets built into a short piece over a track with some drive. The repetition is deliberate: it moves a sequence out of your head and into your body until it runs by itself.

40–50 mins

Drop the Plan

Then the routine comes away. Short guided freestyles, an optional turn for anyone keen, and the odd freeing rush of moving with nothing fixed. It unnerves most people at first, then wins them over.

50–60 mins

Circle and Cool

We end in a cypher — join in or clap from the edge, both fine — then ease the effort out of the legs. A relaxed close before you head back out.

About Street Dance Classes in Dundee

Street dance is the broad umbrella — a whole family of styles rather than one — and Dundee keeps a genuine scene going beneath it. Showcase the Street runs street-dance programmes as a local charity from Manhattan Works, and Vibe Dance Company teaches hip-hop and street over on Arbroath Road, so the person leading your session is a dancer who still performs, not a name off a rota.

Over a term the class works through the foundations — some weeks on locking, some on popping, breaking or house — so you leave with range instead of one party piece. The hip-hop class alongside is its own thing, focused on hip-hop's bounce, party steps and set routines, and it is common to do both.

Children, teenagers and adults are taught in separate classes, and every junior session is led by a DBS-checked professional. The studios are central, near Nethergate and City Square, a short walk up from the waterfront station; with no tram or metro it is buses, the A90 or a car park. Dundee's design-city character gives the culture somewhere to belong, and a drop-in is £8.

Your Street Dance Journey

From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.

Weeks 1–4

Getting the Groove

Month One

Rhythm comes first — sitting comfortably in the beat before any sharp moves land. A little top rock, one dependable lock, and underneath it the real goal: moving without feeling watched.

What to Wear

Joggers or trackies, a top you can move in, flat cushioned trainers. Comfort matters, and since attitude is a fair part of street, turning up already looking the part helps.

Weeks 5–10

One Style at a Time

Spotting the Differences

Each foundation gets its own week and the contrasts stand out — popping's held tension, house's quick feet, locking beside breaking. Some click, some fight back, and sorting that out is half the fun.

First Freestyles

Freestyle arrives in small doses. Moving with no plan feels huge at first, but it is what the whole thing rests on, and the nerves fade a little every week.

Months 3–5

Making It Yours

A Voice of Your Own

Freestyles run longer, routines tighten, and borrowed moves pick up a stamp that is clearly yours. On the floor you are choosing now, not copying the front.

One of the Crew

The cypher feels normal and faces are familiar. Street draws you in rather than just slotting you a class, and the local scene has quietly made space for you.

Months 6+

Let Loose

Flow

Switching styles feels natural, a nearby battle barely raises your pulse, and you link moves nobody taught you. That live invention is exactly what the culture values over neat lines.

What's Next

One dancer follows their style into crews and showcases; another gets pulled into the region's jams and our battles; another just keeps circling the whole family for love of it.

Street Dance in Dundee FAQ

Everything you need to know before your first class.

What's the difference between street dance and hip-hop? +

Street dance is the umbrella term; hip-hop is one style beneath it. Here we cycle through the whole range — locking, popping, breaking, house — while the separate Dundee hip-hop class stays on hip-hop's grooves, party steps and choreography. Doing both is common, and each helps the other.

I've never danced a step — will I be lost? +

Not a chance. Everything starts with a simple rock and bounce that clicks in the first few minutes, then builds a layer at a time. The beginner class is mostly people in your position, so turning up with no experience is completely normal.

Does Dundee actually have a street dance scene? +

It does. Showcase the Street runs street programmes from Manhattan Works as a charity, and Vibe Dance Company teaches hip-hop and street on Arbroath Road — so there is a real local world to move into once you are ready, and we point you toward whatever is on.

Where in Dundee do the street dance classes run? +

At partner studios in the centre around Nethergate and City Square, with younger groups spread wider across town. It is a short walk up from the waterfront station; with no tram or metro, most people bus in, drive the A90 or use a car park. Your exact venue is confirmed on booking.

How much is a street dance class in Dundee? +

A drop-in is £8 — no membership, no contract, come when you can. Once your nearest studio settles a regular weekly slot, discounted blocks open for anyone keeping it up.

Will I get to try breaking? +

Yes — top rock, footwork and freezes are all in the rotation next to locking, popping and house. If breaking grabs you, the local crews and jams are the natural next move, and your coach can point you to them.

Is there a dress code? +

Just wear what lets you move freely and flat trainers with a little cushioning. Past that, style is part of street itself, so turn up as yourself — the look belongs to the dance here.

Do I have to freestyle in front of people? +

Only if you want to. The closing circle is yours to join or watch from the edge, round by round. Most people observe at first and step in later, once it is clear nobody is being judged.

Can you bring street dance to a school or party in Dundee? +

Yes — our travelling team runs street sessions in schools, at birthdays and for youth groups throughout Dundee and Angus, reaching Broughty Ferry, Lochee and Monifieth. Note your venue on the form and we will sort a date.
