Class Structure
Beginners Class — 60 Minutes
Sync the Room
Bounce, rock and weight-shift drills pull everyone onto the same track. It's the base under every street style, and the ten minutes that shake loose both shoulders and first-night nerves at once.
This Week's Foundation
A single pillar heads each session — the snap of locking, the hits of popping, breaking's top rock or the loose roll of house — so your range keeps stretching instead of jamming on one move.
Build the Piece
That week's pillar gets woven into a short stretch of choreography over funk, hip-hop or house, and you leave with something that genuinely scans as a dance.
Let Go of the Count
Freestyle games with nothing to memorise — little dares that teach you to back a movement the instant it lands rather than drill it into the ground.
The Circle, Then Stretch
An open cypher that drags nobody in and cheers everybody, then a full stretch-down before you spill back out the door.
About Street Dance Classes in Sunderland
Level with you: Sunderland's street energy lives more in its studios and community sessions than in any big adult battle night, so we start from the city as it actually is. EL Dance has been running adult and youth street and hip-hop here for years, and Dance JAM keeps a spirited street thread alive — that homegrown, unhyped footing is the ground our class is built on.
Over a term the sessions comb through the whole kit — a fortnight on locking's snap, then popping, then breaking foundations, then the loose footwork of house — because breadth is the aim, not one buffed party trick. The hip-hop class heads the opposite way, boring down into that one dance's grooves and choreography. Loads of Sunderland dancers simply keep a foot in both.
Children, teens and adults each get their own floor and never share one, every band led by its own DBS-checked teacher. Most sessions run from central studios a short step from Sunderland station and the Park Lane stands, reached by Metro, rail or a local bus, and drivers get the door and parking once a place is held. Outgrow the room and that unmistakable Mackem front — the same nerve that once roared finished hulls down the Wear — is your reminder there's always a bigger floor ahead.

Why Choose Street Dance in Sunderland?
Actually Taught
Your lead is a working dancer, not a stand-in filling a gap — Sunderland names such as EL Dance set the bar and the class keeps to it.
The Whole Family
Locking, popping, breaking and house each come round over the term, so you sample the full street spread before deciding which is yours.
Every Age Its Own Floor
Children's, teen and adult groups run apart, each with a DBS-checked lead — far and away the class Sunderland parents ask us about most.
Somewhere Real to Go Next
Ready to push on? The North East's jams and youth showcase nights are where it heads next, and we point you at the ones that repay the effort.
Your Street Dance Journey
From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.
Catch the Groove
Getting Going
Groove, bounce and your opening locking points and top rock. Rhythm and nerve turn up ahead of tidiness, every time.
Kit for the Floor
Joggers, a tee and cushioned flats. Comfort takes it, though a splash of your own style is always fair game.
Sample Everything
Widening Out
Rotating further into popping, house and breaking foundations, sorting out which style your body takes to quickest.
First Freestyle
Little improv dares grow the nerve to move with no set steps — the hinge the whole thing swings on.
Find Your Flavour
Your Own Mix
Longer freestyles and stiffer choreography start folding the styles into something that's clearly you.
One of the Room
Settled in the cypher and known to the regulars — the crew side of street dance, not merely the moves.
Into the Scene
Sharper Work
Sure across the styles, cooler in a battle, stitching combinations of your own together.
Where Next
Regional jams, our own showcases, or a deep dive into the single style that ended up picking you.
Street Dance in Sunderland FAQ
Everything you need to know before your first class.
Where do the Sunderland street dance classes run? +
Out of central studios a short step from Sunderland station and the Park Lane stands, with children's groups dotted across Washington, Houghton-le-Spring and the wider suburbs. Book in and you'll get the studio and its parking by email, each one near a Metro stop or main bus route.
What does a street dance class in Sunderland cost? +
£8 a drop-in — no joining fee, no block locking you in, so come whenever the week allows. Once a studio pins down its regular night, discounted blocks are offered to anyone ready to commit.
How does street dance differ from your hip-hop class? +
Street dance is the umbrella, cycling locking, popping, breaking and house across the term; the hip-hop class burrows into that one dance's grooves and choreography. Lots of Sunderland dancers do both and let each feed the other.
I've never danced — can I keep up? +
Easily. Beginners make up the starter sessions; nobody rocks up able to break. It opens on the groove, the plain bounce anyone finds in a song, and everything builds from there at a pace the room sets.
What do I wear to street dance? +
Stuff you can move and sweat in, plus flat trainers with a bit of give underfoot. Street culture cares how you carry yourself, so past that, dress like yourself and no one bats an eye.
Do you teach breaking? +
We do — top rock, footwork and starter freezes cycle through alongside locking, popping and house. If breaking grabs you, we'll steer you to the regional jams where it thrives.
What ages can do street dance in Sunderland? +
The main adult room takes anyone from 17 upward, while teens and children from age six have their own groups, every one led by a DBS-checked teacher. Mark your age band on the enquiry form and we'll place you correctly.
Can you bring street dance to a school or party in Sunderland? +
We can. Our mobile crew runs workshops, birthday sessions and youth-club dates across Sunderland and out to Washington, Houghton-le-Spring, Ryhope and Roker. Put the venue on the enquiry form and we'll handle the rest.
Will there actually be freestyle in class? +
There will — guided freestyle each week and an optional cypher to finish, never forced. It's where street dance quits being copied steps and turns into yours, and most people edge into the circle inside a month or two.
