Class Structure

Beginners Class — 60 Minutes

0–10 mins

Move From the First Minute

We skip the slow, static warm-up entirely. You are dancing within seconds — easy movements that free up the joints and settle you into the beat — so the bounce that underpins every street style is already ticking along before you have had time to feel self-conscious.

10–25 mins

One Branch at a Time

Each week the class picks a single thread and follows it properly — one week locking and its clean stops, the next popping's punchy hits, then house steps, then breaking's top rock. Over a month you feel your way around the whole street dance family rather than skating across the top of it.

25–40 mins

Stacking Up a Routine

Everything from the style block gets built into a short piece of choreography, set to a funk, hip-hop or house break. Running it over and over lets it drop from your head down into your body, until you are dancing it rather than counting it.

40–50 mins

No Plan at All

Next come the freestyle games, where there is nothing set to follow. Going from repeating a move you were shown to inventing one in the moment is where a street class truly comes alive — it is the difference between doing steps and actually dancing.

50–60 mins

The Circle

We close in a relaxed cypher — step in or hang back, entirely your shout — where the room cheers whatever you bring, followed by a proper stretch so you leave loose instead of stiff.

About Street Dance Classes in Hull

The words 'street dance' do not point at one thing — it is a catch-all for a family of styles that came up outside the studio, in clubs and at parties and on actual streets: breaking, popping, locking, house and plenty more besides. In Hull we teach across the whole lot, with instructors who are still active dancers themselves, so you can try each one on for size before you commit to any. Classes are split by age into children's, teens' and adults' groups, and nobody expects you to arrive knowing anything — most people in our street dance classes in Hull start with zero experience.

Hull is a natural home for this. It is the city that came out of the shadows as the first English UK City of Culture back in 2017, an inaugural year that filled the waterfront with light and poured fresh energy into everything creative here. It has serious music in its blood, too — Mick Ronson, who built the sound of Bowie's Spiders from Mars, was a Hull lad, and The Housemartins came out of here — and the young, buzzing quarters around the Fruit Market on Humber Street and the University of Hull keep that creative pulse going.

Nothing is required to begin — the whole thing starts from a simple bounce that takes about a minute to find. Our partner studios are dotted around the centre near Paragon and Queen Victoria Square, in the Fruit Market by the marina, and up in the Avenues on Princes Avenue, all easy to reach on foot across Hull's flat, walkable middle, and our mobile team covers the rest of the city and East Yorkshire besides. Wear trainers and something you don't mind moving hard in, and that is genuinely it.

Why Choose Street Dance in Hull?

Real Musical Roots

Hull has proper music in its DNA — Mick Ronson shaped Bowie's Spiders from Mars, The Housemartins and Everything But The Girl came out of the city — and a dance form built entirely on rhythm and the beat feels right at home in a place with that kind of pedigree.

Sample the Whole Family

A full term gives you proper time on each strand — popping, locking, house and breaking — long enough to notice how differently they each move and to pick your favourite for actual reasons, instead of just defaulting to the first one you tried.

Classes for Every Age

We split into age bands from six years old right up to adults, each taught by a DBS-checked coach. Kids' street is far and away our most in-demand class, and nervy adults usually find their feet quicker than they expect once the first track drops.

Somewhere to Take It

Hull's creative scene has been wide awake ever since its year as the first English City of Culture in 2017 — the Fruit Market's galleries and studios, the two theatres, the University crowd. So when you fancy a stage, a battle or just an audience to try yourself in front of, you will not have to look very hard.

Your Street Dance Journey

From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.

Weeks 1–4

Getting the Bounce

The Early Weeks

Your first sessions are mostly about the groove itself — the bounce, the rock, a taste of top rock, a little locking. The whole aim is to get comfortable moving to the beat and to leave the nerves at the door; the crisp, technical stuff comes later.

What to Wear

Comfortable joggers or trackies, a t-shirt and flat trainers with a little cushioning. Get comfort sorted first — beyond that, this is a culture that celebrates individual style, so wear whatever makes you feel most like yourself.

Month 2–3

Getting Familiar

The Foundations

This is where you get properly into the individual styles — spending real time on locking, then popping, then house and breaking — discovering how each one wants your body to move and which of them come most naturally to you.

Your First Freestyle

We ease you into improvising with a bit of structure, and slowly the courage to move with nothing rehearsed starts to grow. That one ability — dancing without a plan — turns out to be what everything else in street dance is built on.

Month 4–6

Your Own Style

It Starts to Show

Your freestyles run longer, your routines get tighter, and the first hints of movement that is unmistakably yours begin poking through the copied steps.

Part of the Room

The circle goes from something that made you nervous to somewhere you feel at ease — by now you are part of a community, not just a name on a class register.

Month 6+

Into the Scene

Battle-Ready

You can hold your own in any of the styles now, a battle breaking out no longer fazes you, and you are stringing together moves nobody taught you — that spark of originality is precisely what the culture values most.

What Comes Next

There are jams and battles around Yorkshire to get stuck into, our own competitions when you fancy testing your nerve for real, or committing fully to the one branch that has truly clicked for you.

Street Dance in Hull FAQ

Everything you need to know before your first class.

Do I need any experience to come along? +

Not a scrap. Everything kicks off from the bounce — a simple groove that takes about a minute to pick up — and builds outward from there. In a beginners' class the vast majority have never danced a step, and adults trying it cold make up most of the room.

How's this different from your hip-hop class? +

Think of street dance as the big umbrella — over a term it moves through popping, locking, house, breaking and the rest. Hip-hop, by contrast, stays fixed on hip-hop specifically: its grooves, its party steps, its choreography. Plenty of people take both, and each tends to feed the other.

What ages do you teach in Hull? +

The adult classes cover 17 up to 75. Younger dancers are grouped separately — 15s and 16s together, then 9 to 14, then 6 to 8 — and every children's group has a DBS-checked coach. Just tell us your age on the enquiry form and we will match you to the right session.

Where in Hull do the classes run? +

At partner studios near Paragon and Queen Victoria Square in the centre, down in the Fruit Market on Humber Street, and up in the Avenues on Princes Avenue, with the kids' groups reaching further across the city. Everything sits within an easy flat walk, and your exact address lands once you enrol.

What does it cost? +

A drop-in is £8, with no membership and no contract tying you in, so you can just turn up when it suits. Discounted blocks become available down the line, once the regular weekly timetable at your local studio is set.

What should I wear? +

Comfy clothes you can move in freely and flat trainers with a little give underfoot. After that, honestly, wear what you like — expressing who you are is baked into street dance, so looking like yourself is part of doing it right.

Will I get to learn breaking? +

Absolutely. When breaking comes round you will cover top rock, footwork, freezes and the drops, sitting right next to your locking, popping and house weeks. If it really lands with you, there is a young break scene around the Fruit Market and University of Hull to get into — and we will show you where.

What makes Hull good for street dance? +

Youth and creative energy, mostly. The city came out of the shadows as the first English City of Culture in 2017, it has real music heritage from Mick Ronson to The Housemartins, and the University and the Fruit Market keep the whole scene young, open and up for anyone who wants a go.

Can you run sessions at schools and venues around Hull? +

Yes — our mobile crew brings street dance out to schools, birthday parties and youth clubs all over Hull and East Yorkshire, from Hessle and Cottingham to Beverley, Anlaby and beyond. Just add where you are based to the enquiry form and we will get it booked in.
