Class Structure

Beginners Class — 60 Minutes

0–10 mins

Lock Into the Beat

We begin with the bounce that lives under every street style — the rocking, weight-dropping pulse of the groove — drilled together until everyone in the room is riding the same rhythm.

10–25 mins

This Week's Pillar

A single foundation heads each class — perhaps locking, perhaps popping, breaking or house — so a term carries you through the whole vocabulary rather than one trick.

25–40 mins

Stack the Choreography

That foundation is built into a compact routine set to funk or hip-hop, the moment where repetition finally becomes real dancing.

40–50 mins

Off the Cuff

Structured freestyle with light, optional face-offs for those who fancy it — quietly building the courage to move without a plan.

50–60 mins

Into the Cypher

A circle nobody is pushed into, every offering met with a cheer, and then a proper stretch to wind the session down.

About Street Dance Classes in Peterborough

Let's be straight about street in Peterborough: the real strength sits in the schools rather than a heaving adult battle circuit, and it helps nobody to claim otherwise. The Hebden School of Dancing carries broad local standing across styles including street, and a handful of other academies feed the city's young dancers. The person teaching you dances for a living, and you can tell — knowledge earned over years on the floor, not lifted from a manual.

The classes rotate the whole street toolkit — you'll spend weeks on locking, on popping, on breaking, on house — because the point is to speak the whole language rather than polish a single showpiece. Our separate hip-hop sessions go the other way, drilling down into hip-hop's own grooves, social steps and choreography. If you want a picture that fits the effort, this is a city that built diesel engines for the world at Perkins — and a tight crew snapping into a formation has that same feel of many parts firing on one beat.

Each age group trains apart — kids, teens and adults in their own sessions, every class taught by a DBS-checked professional. Our rooms sit in the middle of the city, a few minutes on foot from Peterborough station on the East Coast Main Line and the Queensgate bus station; the city has no tram or metro, so it's buses or the A1(M) for drivers, with parking nearby. Drop-ins are £8, and if breaking turns out to be your thing, your teacher will steer you toward the jams worth travelling for.

Why Choose Street Dance in Peterborough?

Taught by Real Dancers

Your instructors come from the working dance world — people who genuinely lock, pop and break, passing on only the moves they rely on in their own dancing.

The Whole Toolkit

Locking, popping, breaking, house — the syllabus moves through all of them, so you get a taste of the full street spectrum before you pick a lane.

Kids and Teens Too

Separate kids' and teens' groups, all led by DBS-checked professionals — dependably the most-booked sessions we run in the city.

An Engine-City Beat

Peterborough made its name building engines, and there's something engine-like in a well-drilled crew — separate dancers hitting one shape together, every piece timed to the same beat.

Your Street Dance Journey

From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.

Week 1–4

Find the Bounce

Getting Started

Grooves, bounce and your earliest locking and top rock. The target is rhythm and nerve, not polish.

What to Wear

Joggers or trackies, a tee and cushioned flat-soled trainers. Comfort first; personal style is a bonus.

Month 2–3

Sampling Styles

Foundations

Deeper into locking, popping, house and breaking — learning what each asks of your body and which one clicks.

First Freestyle

Guided improvisation that grows the confidence to move without counting the steps out first.

Month 4–6

Your Own Flavour

Finding a Voice

Longer freestyles and harder choreography, mixing styles into movement that starts to look like yours.

Belonging

At home in the cypher and part of the room — street dance is a culture you join, not just a class.

Month 6+

Part of the Scene

Advanced Practice

Versatile across styles, confident in a battle, and building combinations that are your own.

What Comes Next

Regional jams and battles, our own events, or specialising in the style that chose you.

Street Dance in Peterborough FAQ

Everything you need to know before your first class.

Do I need any experience to start street dance? +

Absolutely none. We open every class on the groove — the simple bounce that anyone can find — and grow it from there. In our starter sessions the room is mostly complete beginners.

Where in Peterborough are the street dance classes held? +

At partner studios in the central corridor near Cathedral Square, a few minutes' walk from Peterborough station and the Queensgate bus station, with kids' groups spread wider across the city. The exact venue is confirmed when you book.

How much is a street dance class in Peterborough? +

Every drop-in costs £8, with no membership and no contract behind it — you simply turn up and pay for the session. Cheaper block bookings arrive once your studio's schedule is fixed.

What ages do you teach? +

The main classes run for adults 17 and over, with dedicated teen and children's groups alongside, all led by DBS-checked professionals. Choose your age band on the enquiry form and we'll place you in the right class.

What should I wear? +

Loose, comfortable kit and trainers with flat, cushioned soles are all you need. Street culture prizes individual style, so past that, turn up looking however feels right to you.

What's the difference between street dance and hip-hop here? +

Think of street dance as the broad heading — a rotation of popping, locking, house, breaking and beyond from week to week. The hip-hop class narrows in on hip-hop itself: its groove, its party steps, its routines. Lots of dancers take both.

Will I get to learn breaking? +

Yes — you'll cover top rock, freezes and footwork within the wider style rotation, next to locking, popping and house. If breaking is the bit that hooks you, the regional jams and battles are the next move, and your teacher will point the way.

Can you run street dance sessions at my school or party in Peterborough? +

Yes — we run a mobile street dance team here too. We bring workshops to schools, youth clubs and birthday parties right across Peterborough and into the surrounding Fens. Mention your venue on the enquiry form.

Is there freestyling in the class? +

Yes. Most sessions include guided freestyle work and a cypher you can opt into — improvising is where the style really comes alive. No one is forced into the circle, though by the second month most people are itching to jump in.
