Class Structure

Beginners Class — 60 Minutes

0–10 mins

Move From the First Minute

No hanging about — we are up and moving immediately, a warm-up that loosens the joints and drops you into the pocket of the track. That low, rolling bounce underneath every street style is already ticking over from the opening seconds.

10–25 mins

A Different Style Each Week

Each session shines the light on a single style and gets stuck in — locking's sharp freezes one week, popping's hits the next, house's darting footwork or the top rock of breaking after that — so a month covers the lot.

25–40 mins

Piece It Into a Routine

That week's moves stack up into a short routine set to breaks pulled from funk, hip-hop and house, looped over and over until it runs on muscle memory and the counting falls away.

40–50 mins

Nothing Rehearsed

Improv games get you dancing with nothing planned at all, and making that jump — from copying steps to inventing your own — is really where dancing begins.

50–60 mins

Into the Cypher

A loose, take-it-or-leave-it circle is your moment to drop something for a room that will cheer anything you bring, before a proper stretch closes the hour.

About Street Dance Classes in Cardiff

Street dance isn't one dance so much as a whole family — the umbrella over everything that grew up in clubs, at house parties and on street corners rather than in a mirrored studio: popping and locking, breaking, house and a sprawl of cousins. Our Cardiff classes range across the lot, led by dancers still out in the scene themselves, so you get a proper go at each before picking a favourite. The room mixes the generations too, with separate groups for kids, teens and adults — and in our street dance classes in Cardiff, turning up as a beginner is simply the default.

The capital suits it down to the ground. Cardiff is big, young and full of students — Cathays and Roath packed with them — and a genuine television city where the cameras really do roll, Doctor Who having filmed here since 2005. It runs a home-grown urban scene as well, clustered around the after-dark lane of Womanby Street and Clwb Ifor Bach under the castle walls. That restless, show-me energy is a perfect match for funk, house and hip-hop.

You need nothing to begin — the whole thing kicks off from a bounce that clicks inside a couple of minutes. Our studios sit around the city centre by the Castle and the arcades, down in Cardiff Bay and out west in Canton, each only minutes on foot from the pair of central stations, while the mobile crew covers the wider region too. Just turn up in trainers and whatever lets you throw yourself about.

Why Choose Street Dance in Cardiff?

Cameras That Genuinely Roll

Cardiff has been filming Doctor Who since 2005 and is a television city through and through — the odds are there is a set, a screen or a shoot going on close by. Street dance feels right at home in a city this fond of a performance.

Taste Every Branch

A term gives you genuine time in each corner — popping, locking, house, breaking — one after the next, plenty to feel how they differ and pick a lane with your eyes open.

Six Years Up

Classes are grouped by age from six upward, each one under a DBS-checked coach. The children's sessions are the busiest booking we take, and nervy adults tend to find their feet just as quickly.

Young and Wide Open

A huge student population and a live-music lane all its own on Womanby Street keep Cardiff's scene young, mixed and easy to step into — with stages to perform on the moment the urge strikes.

Your Street Dance Journey

From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.

Weeks 1–4

Catching the Bounce

Getting Started

Day one starts with the bounce and the rock, before we brush against top rock and a touch of locking. These first weeks are about catching the rhythm and shedding the self-consciousness — the sharp, precise shapes can wait their turn.

What to Wear

Loose bottoms, a tee and flat trainers with a bit of cushion. Sort the comfort first; past that, this culture thrives on individual style, so genuinely, wear whatever feels most like you.

Month 2–3

Getting to Know the Styles

Foundations

You push further into each branch in turn — the locking, the popping, the house, the breaking — figuring out what each asks of the body and which ones you take to fastest.

First Freestyle

A dose of structured improvising grows the nerve to move with no choreography under you — the single skill that everything else in street dance is built upon.

Month 4–6

Sounding Like You

Finding a Voice

The freestyles stretch out, the routines get harder, and the first hints of movement that's unmistakably yours start to come through.

Belonging

The circle turns from something you are tested in into somewhere that feels like your own front room; by then you belong to the group properly, part of a culture you have signed up to, not a lesson you merely turn up for.

Month 6+

Out in the Scene

Battle-Ready

At ease across all the branches, unfazed when a battle kicks off, and piecing together combinations of your own — the invention this culture rates above everything.

What's Next

The city's own jam nights and street battles to dive into, in-house contests of ours if you want a proper test, or throwing everything at whichever branch has claimed you.

Street Dance in Cardiff FAQ

Everything you need to know before your first class.

Do I need any experience to start? +

Truly none. The whole class sets off from the bounce — a groove that clicks within a minute — and builds up from that. Look around a first-timers' session and most people have hardly danced a step before.

What should I wear? +

Loose gear you can move in, plus flat trainers with a little cushion to them. Past that, individuality runs right through this culture, so genuinely — come as whatever feels most like you.

What ages do you teach? +

The adults' class runs 17 to 75. Separately there is a teens' group for 15s and 16s, then a 9–14 group and a 6–8 group below that — all four with a DBS-checked coach in charge. Note your age on the form and we will point you to the right one.

How much do street dance classes in Cardiff cost? +

It is eight pounds each drop-in, nothing to join and no contract tying you in — show up whenever it works. Cheaper blocks turn up further down the line, once your closest studio pins down its regular weekly time.

Where in Cardiff are the street dance classes held? +

Our partner studios cluster around the city centre by the Castle and arcades, down in Cardiff Bay and out west in Canton, with the children's groups reaching further across the region. Each sits an easy walk from Cardiff Central or Queen Street, and your exact address arrives the moment you sign up.

Will I get to learn breaking? +

Yes indeed. During the breaking weeks you will take on top rock, the footwork, freezes and drops down to the floor, sitting right next to house, popping and locking. If it really grabs you, Cardiff has a home-grown scene of its own around Womanby Street, and we will point the way.

How's street dance different from your hip-hop class? +

Think of street as the broad umbrella that cycles through popping, house, locking and breaking, and plenty more, over a term. The hip-hop class zeroes right in on hip-hop by itself — the grooves, the party dances, the set routines. A lot of dancers take both and reckon each sharpens the other.

What makes Cardiff good for street dance? +

Two things, really — its youth and its love of a performance. Cardiff is a big student capital and a genuine TV city, home to Doctor Who since 2005, with a live urban scene of its own down on Womanby Street. All that suits hip-hop, house and funk right down to the ground.

Do you bring street dance to schools and venues around Cardiff? +

We do — our travelling team takes school assemblies, kids' birthday parties and youth-club workshops right across South Wales, out to Penarth, Barry, Caerphilly and up into the Valleys. Pop your venue details onto the enquiry form and we will handle the rest.
