About Street Dance Classes in Durham
Street dance is the family name for the urban styles that grew straight out of street culture — locking, popping, breaking, house, waacking and krumping among them. Our Durham classes rotate through them, teaching the true foundations, the musicality and the freestyle instinct that gives each style its own character. This is rooted, expressive movement with a history behind it, not watered-down routines bolted onto a chart song.
Durham is a young, student-heavy city, and its University and college scene keeps a lively grassroots street and freestyle energy bubbling — we point to that scene as somewhere the culture already lives, not as a partner of ours. There is a local rhythm worth honouring too: the brass bands and marching pit-wheel banners of the Durham Miners' Gala, the Big Meeting, give the county a proud percussive pulse of its own, and street dance is all about locking into a pulse. Our sessions respect where every style came from while keeping the door wide open for first-timers.
You need no experience — the groove is the ground everyone stands on to begin. Wear loose, comfortable clothes and flat-soled trainers, bring some humour and park your self-consciousness at the door. Every class is a flat £8 on the night. Why Choose Street Dance in Durham?
The Real Foundations
You learn where it comes from — locking from Don Campbell, popping out of the Boogaloo, breaking from the Bronx — so the moves carry meaning, not just shapes copied off a screen.
Freestyle Freedom
Street dance trains you to make movement up as it happens. No memorised routine required — just you, the track and whatever your body decides to say next.
Serious Energy
Fast grooves, sharp hits and explosive bursts. It is a genuine workout that never once feels like exercise — only movement, sweat and adrenaline.
Cypher Courage
Optional battles and closing cyphers grow nerve, invention and the knack of performing under a little pressure, all with the circle cheering you along.
Your Street Dance Journey
From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.
Getting Groovy
Getting Started
Bounce and rock patterns, top-rock from breaking, lock-and-point from locking. You uncover the base groove that quietly powers every street style.
What to Wear
Loose gear you can move in — joggers, a tee or hoodie — and cushioned flat-soled trainers. Dress for movement and for showing a bit of your own character.
Exploring Styles
Style Foundations
Rotating through locking, popping, house and breaking, picking up the history and the music behind each and noticing which one your body warms to.
Freestyle Basics
Structured freestyle games — moving with no plan, answering the music, finding your own movement voice and the nerve to step into a circle.
Finding Your Voice
Developing Identity
Deeper study in the style or two you love most, longer freestyle stretches and more involved choreography, plus how to blend styles into one vocabulary.
Community
At home in the cypher and plugged into the group, with a flavour that is starting to be recognisably yours. Street dance is a culture, and you are inside it.
Holding Your Own
Advanced Practice
A confident freestyler across several styles, comfortable trading in a battle, inventing combinations and chasing the originality the culture prizes.
What Comes Next
Enter local jams and battles, specialise in one style, take our hip-hop class for wider context, or travel to national street events.
Street Dance in Durham FAQ
Everything you need to know before your first class.
What does street dance actually mean? +
Street dance is a catch-all for styles that were born outside the studio — in streets, parks, clubs and community halls. It gathers locking, popping, breaking, house, waacking, krumping and more, each carrying its own history, music and movement language.
Is street dance okay for complete beginners? +
Entirely. We open with groove and rhythm, the bedrock under every street style, and no earlier dance experience counts for anything. The class builds up from the floor, one layer at a time.
What should I wear to a street dance class? +
Loose, comfortable clothes — joggers or tracksuit bottoms with a tee or hoodie — and flat trainers with a bit of cushioning. The culture prizes personal style, so lean into whatever feels like you.
How much are street dance classes in Durham? +
Sessions are a flat £8, drop-in, with no membership and no contract to sign. Block deals will come along once the regular weekly schedule is confirmed.
Where do the street classes happen in Durham? +
We are locking down a central Durham studio with a clean, smooth floor. It will sit near the Market Place and Saddler Street within reach of the station and Cathedral Bus — there is no Metro here, and the peninsula's cobbles and gradients mean we pick an accessible room. Register for the address.
What is the difference between street dance and hip-hop? +
Hip-hop dance is one strand within the wider hip-hop culture. Street dance is the bigger umbrella spanning many urban styles — locking, popping, breaking, house — some of which came before hip-hop. Our street class roams across the breadth; our hip-hop class digs into hip-hop groove and choreography specifically.
Will I get to learn breaking? +
Yes — breaking foundations like top-rock, footwork and freezes sit in the rotation alongside locking, popping and house, giving you a real taste of each so you can work out which pulls at you most.
What music will be playing? +
Funk, soul, hip-hop, house, electro and breaks, matched to whatever style is on that week — funk for locking, electro-funk for popping, breakbeats for breaking and, naturally, house for house.
Is there freestyling every week? +
There is — freestyle sits at the heart of street dance culture. Every session folds in structured freestyle exercises and an optional cypher. Nobody is dragged into the circle, but everyone is warmly nudged towards it.
