Class Structure

Beginners Class — 60 Minutes

0–10 min

Bounce and Body Roll

We warm up in the language of the style itself — grooves, bounces and body rolls — so the loosening-up doubles as your first taste of how street movement actually sits in the body.

10–22 min

Isolations

Moving one part while the rest stays quiet: chest, shoulders, head. It feels alien for about five minutes and then it unlocks, and suddenly everything else you learn has texture.

22–38 min

The Foundations

A handful of the genuine building-block moves — steps with names and history — drilled slowly and to a clear count before we speed anything up.

38–52 min

Building the Routine

The pieces get stitched into a short choreography to a current track. We layer it a phrase at a time so the whole thing sticks in your memory, not just your legs.

52–60 min

Run It and Wind Down

A couple of full runs of what you have built — the bit that feels like actually dancing — then a proper stretch to keep the next-day ache honest.

About Street Dance Classes in Cheltenham

Street dance is less about splitting the floor with a headspin and more about groove — the loose, weighted bounce underneath everything, the isolations, and the confidence to let your body answer a beat. Our Cheltenham class is built for adults who never did this as kids and would like to now, minus any teenage-cypher pressure.

The town already has a strong studio scene for the young and the serious — the likes of Danceworks and teachers such as Coady turn out committed performers, and we cheerfully point ambitious dancers their way. What has been thinner on the ground is a relaxed, no-experience street class aimed squarely at grown-up beginners. That gap is exactly what we fill: one clear routine at a time, broken into pieces you can hold.

You come as you are, in trainers, and by the end of a block you have a short piece you could genuinely perform — the kind of small, sharp achievement that feels a bit like cracking a code.

Why Choose Street Dance in Cheltenham?

No Teenage Pressure

This is a beginners' room for adults, not a battle cypher. Everyone is picking it up from scratch, which makes it a genuinely low-stakes place to loosen up and look a bit daft on the way to looking good.

Just Bring Trainers

No kit, no partner, no dance history. Clean trainers with a bit of pivot and clothes you can sweat in, and you are fully equipped for the whole term.

You Leave With a Routine

Rather than loose drills that vanish by Tuesday, you build one real piece of choreography you can perform — a concrete thing to show for the hour.

Groove That Travels

The bounce and musicality you build here quietly improve every other kind of dancing you try, from a wedding floor to a festival crowd.

Your Street Dance Journey

From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.

01

Getting the Groove

First things

The bounce, basic isolations and stepping in time. Before any fancy moves, you learn to sit in the beat — the thing that separates dancing from marking time.

Kit

Clean, supportive trainers and comfortable clothes. That is genuinely the entire list; leave the rest at home.

02

Foundations

Building vocabulary

A set of named foundation moves drilled to a clear count, so you gather a real bank of steps rather than a blur of copied shapes.

Cleaner and sharper

We tidy the timing and the stops, because in street dance the crispness of a freeze often reads louder than the move before it.

03

Choreography

Stringing it together

Moves link into a short routine to a track you actually know, layered a phrase at a time so it lodges in the memory.

Finding your flavour

Once the counts are secure we loosen them off, and your own attitude and timing start to come through the steps.

04

Performing It

Running the piece

Full-out runs of the finished routine, dancing it rather than remembering it — the point where people surprise themselves.

Where next

Keen to push harder or compete? We will happily nudge you towards Cheltenham's dedicated street studios and teachers when you are ready for that level.

Street Dance in Cheltenham FAQ

Everything you need to know before your first class.

I have zero dance experience — can I keep up? +

Yes. The class is designed for adult total beginners, and we break every move down to a slow count before speeding up. Most of the room is learning it for the first time alongside you.

Is there an age limit for the adult class? +

Our adult street class runs across a wide age range, roughly late teens upward. It is about willingness to bounce about, not about being young — plenty of people start in their thirties, forties and beyond.

What does it cost? +

A flat £8 per class, paid on arrival. No membership and no upfront block — you simply pay for the sessions you turn up to.

What do I need to bring or wear? +

Clean trainers with a bit of grip and pivot, and clothes you can move and sweat in. No specialist kit and no partner required — just yourself and some water.

How is this different from the town's established street studios? +

Studios like Danceworks and teachers such as Coady do brilliant work with committed and younger dancers. Ours is the relaxed adult-beginner entry point — and when you outgrow it, we will point you straight at them.

Will I actually learn a routine or just do drills? +

Both, and by design. Drills build the vocabulary, but over a block we assemble it into a real short routine you can perform — you leave with something finished, not just fitter.

Does race week or festival season affect classes? +

The town swells during Gold Cup week in March and the jazz, literature, science and music festivals, so traffic, parking and late taxis all get tighter. We will flag any session that shifts and suggest leaving extra time on those dates.

Where do I park or how do I arrive by public transport? +

The Regent Arcade multi-storey is central and close to most venues — check its closing time for a later class. Cheltenham Spa station sits west of the centre at Lansdown, about a fifteen-to-twenty-minute walk or a short bus or taxi in.

Can you run a street dance session for a group or hen do? +

Definitely, as a private one-off rather than a drop-in class. Send us the date and numbers and we will build a fun, achievable routine to suit the group's level.
