Class Structure

Beginners Class — 60 Minutes

0–10 mins

Find the Rock

Rock steps and bounce drills over a heavy beat — the groove underneath every street style, and the ten minutes that reset your entire day.

10–25 mins

Foundation of the Week

One pillar per session — locking, popping, breaking or house — taught with its history attached, so you know who created what and why it matters.

25–40 mins

The Combo

A choreography block built from the week's foundation, pitched so beginners can finish it and experienced dancers can push texture and character into it.

40–50 mins

Freestyle Rounds

Structured improvisation games in small groups — training the confidence to move without a script, which is the real skill street dance teaches.

50–60 mins

Open Circle

An optional cypher to close — step in if you fancy it, cheer from the edge if you don't — then stretch out and go home taller.

About Street Dance Classes in Glasgow

Scotland's street dance scene does its arguing in Glasgow: the jams, battles and crew sessions that keep Scottish hip-hop culture honest are concentrated here, and our street dance classes in Glasgow are taught by dancers active inside that scene. You learn popping, locking, breaking and house as living styles with local roots, not as moves copied off a screen.

Sessions run at partner studios in the Merchant City and Finnieston — exact venues confirmed at registration — each within easy reach of Glasgow Central or a Clockwork Orange stop, as locals call the Subway. Adults train alongside separate teen and children's groups, because half the demand for street dance in Glasgow comes from under-15s with more bounce than the rest of us.

Beginners start with the groove — the rock and bounce underneath every street style — and nobody freestyles until they want to. When you are hungry for more, the Scottish battle calendar is the natural graduation, and your teachers can tell you exactly which jam to go and watch first.

Why Choose Street Dance in Glasgow?

Inside the Scottish Scene

Your teachers train, battle and judge within Scotland's street dance community — the culture reaches you first-hand, not filtered through a screen.

The Whole Family of Styles

Locking, popping, breaking and house each get their turn in the rotation, so you discover which style answers back before committing to one.

Where the Kids Are

Separate groups for 6–8s, 9–14s and teens, all with DBS-checked staff — street dance is our most requested children's class, and Glasgow is no exception.

A Calendar to Grow Into

Scotland's jams and battles give you somewhere real to aim — first as a spectator, later, if the bug bites, as a name on the entry list.

Your Street Dance Journey

From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.

Week 1–4

Groove In

Getting Started

Groove basics plus a first taste of locking and top rock. The aim is confidence on the beat, and it arrives quicker than anyone expects.

What to Wear

Loose, comfortable layers and flat cushioned trainers. Street dance has no uniform — turning up as yourself is the whole culture.

Month 2–3

Meet the Styles

Rotating Foundations

Popping hits, house footwork, breaking basics — each foundation gets proper attention, and one of them will start feeling like yours.

First Freestyles

Guided improvisation in small circles, building the nerve to move without choreography — scary once, addictive forever.

Month 4–6

Something of Your Own

Personal Flavour

Your freestyle develops recognisable habits — the good kind — and combinations begin mixing styles with real intent.

Into the Room

The cypher stops feeling intimidating and becomes the part of the hour you look forward to.

Month 6+

Scene Ready

Advanced Practice

Sharper foundations, longer freestyles and choreography with genuine texture — the standard Scottish battles are judged on.

What Comes Next

Watch a Glasgow jam, enter a beginner battle, join a crew — your teachers can point you towards all three.

Street Dance in Glasgow FAQ

Everything you need to know before your first class.

Where do the street dance classes take place in Glasgow? +

Partner studios in the Merchant City and Finnieston host the sessions, with the exact venue confirmed when you register. Both are minutes from Glasgow Central or a stop on the Subway loop.

What is the price of street dance classes in Glasgow? +

£8 drop-in — turn up, dance, decide later. Discounted block bookings become available once the regular schedule for your studio is set.

I've never danced before — is street dance too much for a first class? +

The opposite: it is one of the easiest starts in dance, because everything begins with the groove — a bounce anyone can find inside ten minutes. Beginners are the backbone of every starter session.

What should I wear to street dance? +

Loose layers you can move in and flat trainers with cushioning. There is no dress code beyond that — personal style is part of the culture, so wear what feels right.

What's the difference between this and the hip-hop class? +

Street dance is the umbrella covering locking, popping, breaking and house in rotation. The hip-hop class drills down into hip-hop's own grooves, party dances and choreography. Plenty of Glasgow dancers take both.

Does the class include breaking? +

Yes — footwork, freezes and top rock all take their turn in the foundation rotation. If breaking hooks you, Scotland's jams and beginner battles are the obvious next stop, and your teachers will happily aim you at them.

Do kids' street dance classes run in Glasgow? +

Yes — groups for 6–8s and 9–14s plus a teens' session for 15–16s, all led by DBS-checked teachers. Street dance is the most asked-for kids' class we run.

Could you bring street dance to a school or venue in Glasgow? +

Yes — our mobile team covers school workshops, youth clubs and birthday parties across greater Glasgow and the west of Scotland. Use the form and tell us about your venue.

Is battling or freestyling compulsory? +

Never. Freestyle exercises are guided and optional, the closing cypher welcomes spectators as warmly as dancers, and nobody is volunteered. Most people opt in eventually — on their own schedule.
