Class Structure

Beginners Class — 60 Minutes

0–10 mins

Into the Groove

Bounce and rock drills to get the whole room onto the same beat — the shared pulse every street style is built on, and the part that loosens everyone up.

10–25 mins

This Week's Pillar

One foundation leads the session — locking one week, popping, top rock or house the next — so across a term you cover the full street family properly.

25–40 mins

Build the Routine

The week's focus style gets stacked into a short piece over funk, hip-hop or house — the moment the drills turn into something that actually looks like dancing.

40–50 mins

Freestyle

Guided improvisation with optional, friendly battles for anyone game — quietly building the nerve to move without a set plan in your head.

50–60 mins

Cypher & Stretch

A circle where whatever you've got gets cheered on — never compulsory — followed by a proper stretch to close the hour out.

About Street Dance Classes in Norwich

Street dance is the umbrella, and Norwich has a real one to shelter under. The Garage runs a broad programme from its four studios on Chapel Field North; Dynamic Dance drills street, hip-hop and musical theatre out at Spixworth and Sprowston; and the Guildhall School of Dancing folds street and street-jazz into its timetable. The people teaching are working dancers, not hobbyists reading from a script.

Across a term you rotate through the pillars — weeks that dig into locking, weeks on popping, breaking and house — so you build a broad vocabulary instead of drilling a single showpiece. The hip-hop class is a separate thing entirely, focused on party dances, bounce and choreographed routines, and plenty of dancers take both.

We keep the age bands apart — separate rooms for children, teenagers and adults, with every junior class run by DBS-checked staff. The studios cluster centrally near Chapel Field and the Lanes, a short walk from the station on the Riverside side or a hop on the bus, since Norwich has no tram or metro and leans on Park & Ride from the edges. Every drop-in is £8 flat.

Why Choose Street Dance in Norwich?

A Real Local Circuit

The Garage, Dynamic Dance and the Guildhall School all keep street alive in and around Norwich, so once you've found your feet there's an actual scene to step into.

One Class, Every Pillar

Locking, popping, breaking and house all cycle through the term, letting you sample the full spread before deciding which one you want to chase.

Kids & Teens on the Timetable

Separate children's and teen groups, taught by DBS-checked professionals, are consistently the busiest classes on the Norwich timetable.

The Lanes Energy

Norwich's independent, creative Lanes give street culture somewhere to belong, and your teachers can point you toward the jams and battles worth showing up for.

Your Street Dance Journey

From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.

Weeks 1–4

First the Groove

Getting Started

Groove work — bounce and rock — with a first dip into top-rock and some locking; for now it's all about catching the beat and shaking off nerves, not polish.

What to Wear

Joggers or trackies, a tee, and flat trainers with a bit of cushioning under the sole. Style is welcome; nobody's marking it.

Months 2–3

Try the Family

Foundations

Rotating deeper through popping, locking, house and breaking, working out what each demands of you and which one your body takes to.

First Freestyle

Relaxed, guided improv that builds — slowly — the nerve to dance without a plan, which is the honest gateway into everything else here.

Months 4–6

Find Your Flavour

Your Voice

Harder choreography and longer freestyles, where you start blending styles into a look that reads as recognisably yours.

In the Circle

By now the cypher feels normal and the faces are familiar — you've stopped attending a class and started belonging to a scene.

Months 6+

Into the Scene

Going Further

Comfortable across several styles, ready to trade in a battle, and cooking up combinations that are yours alone — exactly the invention street rewards.

What's Next

Norwich and Norfolk jams and battles, our own competitions, or going deep on the single style that ends up claiming you.

Street Dance in Norwich FAQ

Everything you need to know before your first class.

Where in Norwich do the street dance classes happen? +

Classes run from central partner studios around Chapel Field and the Norwich Lanes, with children's sessions spread a little wider. Everything's a short walk from the Riverside-side station or a quick bus, and your exact room is confirmed once you sign up — there's no tram or metro, so most people walk or bus in.

What's the difference between your street dance and hip-hop classes? +

Street dance is the catch-all — locking, popping, breaking, house and more, rotated week to week. The hip-hop class, by contrast, zeroes in on hip-hop alone — its bounce, party steps and set routines. The two dovetail, and plenty of people take both.

I've never danced — will I be lost? +

You won't be. Everyone opens on the groove — the bounce anyone can find — and grows from there. Most of the starter room has never danced before, so a total beginner is the norm rather than the odd one out.

How much does a street class in Norwich cost? +

A drop-in is £8, and that's the whole price — no membership, no sign-up, nothing to commit to. Once the weekly timetable firms up, regulars can pick up discounted blocks.

Does Norwich actually have a street scene? +

More than you'd expect for the city's size. The Garage programmes street from Chapel Field North, Dynamic Dance runs sessions out at Spixworth and Sprowston, and the Guildhall School teaches street and street-jazz — so there's a genuine local world to move into once you're ready.

What should I wear? +

Comfortable clothes you can throw shapes in and flat, cushioned trainers. Beyond that, personal style is half the point of street dance, so just look like yourself — there's no kit list.

Will I get to try breaking? +

Yes — freezes, footwork and top rock all cycle through alongside locking, popping and house. If breaking's the part that hooks you, your teacher knows where the local jams are.

Do I have to freestyle in front of people? +

Nobody's forced into anything. We ease you in with relaxed, guided drills, and joining the cypher is entirely up to you — though funnily enough, most people are angling for a go within a month.

Can you run street sessions at a school, party or hen do in Norwich? +

We can — there's a mobile street crew that covers Norwich and heads out across Norfolk. Think school workshops, birthday parties, youth-group sessions or a one-off street dance hen do, all brought to your venue. Just mention where on the enquiry form.
