Class Structure

Beginners Class — 60 Minutes

0-10 mins

Onto One Groove

Bounce, rock and weight-shift drills gather the whole room onto a single shared pulse. It underpins every street style there is, and it is the ten minutes that shake the shoulders loose and the nerves along with them.

10-25 mins

The Style of the Week

Each session is fronted by one foundation — locking's crisp snap, popping's hits, the top rock of breaking or house's loose glide — so your vocabulary keeps broadening rather than sticking on a lone move.

25-40 mins

Make a Piece of It

That foundation gets built into a short run of choreography over funk, hip-hop or house, and you leave carrying something that plainly reads as a dance.

40-50 mins

Off the Counts

Freestyle games with nothing to learn by heart — fast little challenges that train you to back a move the instant it happens instead of drilling it flat.

50-60 mins

The Circle and the Stretch

An open cypher that corners nobody and roots for everybody, then a proper stretch-down before you head back out toward the seafront.

About Street Dance Classes in Brighton

Good news first: Brighton's street scene is a genuinely strong one, and we build straight off it. Streetfunk, the street and hip-hop community interest company that JP Omari founded back in 2006, has coached a generation of the city's dancers, while Marina Studios and BN1 Arts Centre keep broad weekly programmes running. That deep, homegrown backdrop is the ground our class stands on.

Across a term the sessions work through the whole toolkit — a fortnight on locking's snap, then popping, then breaking foundations, then the airy footwork of house — because breadth is the goal, not one polished party trick. The hip-hop class heads the other way, drilling down into that single dance's grooves and choreography, and plenty of Brighton dancers simply keep a foot in both. And with Norman Cook — Fatboy Slim — having made this city a byword for big-beat and breaks, there is no shortage of the right music to move to.

Children, teens and adults each get their own floor and never share one, every band led by its own DBS-checked teacher. Street dance classes in Brighton mostly run from central studios a short walk from the station, reachable by rail, bus or a downhill stroll, and drivers get the door and parking once a place is held. Outgrow the room and the city's jams and youth showcase nights are the bigger floor waiting for you.

Why Choose Street Dance in Brighton?

A Working Dancer Up Front

The person leading is an active dancer, not a stopgap covering a shift — in a city where outfits like Streetfunk have set the standard, the class measures up to it.

The Full Street Spread

Locking, popping, breaking and house each take their turn over the term, so you get a feel for the whole family before you settle on the one that fits.

Age Groups Kept Apart

Children's, teen and adult classes run separately, each under a DBS-checked lead — comfortably the class Brighton parents enquire about most often.

The City's Own Sound

Brighton's breaks and big-beat lineage, Norman Cook's stamping ground, means the music you move to is stitched right into the place.

Your Street Dance Journey

From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.

First Month

Catch the Bounce

Where You Start

Groove, bounce and your opening locking points and top rock. Feel and confidence turn up before neatness does, without fail.

What to Bring

Joggers, a tee and trainers with a bit of cushioning. Comfort comes first, though a bit of your own flavour never goes amiss.

Months 2-3

Taste Everything

Broadening Out

Turning further into popping, house and the foundations of breaking, figuring out which style your body clicks with quickest.

First Freestyles

Short improv challenges grow the courage to move with no fixed steps — the pivot the whole class hangs on.

Months 4-6

Your Own Flavour

A Personal Mix

Longer freestyles and tougher choreography start blending the styles into something clearly stamped with you.

Part of the Room

At ease in the cypher and familiar to the regulars — the crew half of street dance, not merely the steps.

Beyond Six Months

Into the Scene

Tighter Work

Confident across the styles, cooler under battle pressure, assembling combinations that are your own invention.

What's Next

Brighton's jams, our own showcase nights, or a full plunge into the single style that came to claim you.

Street Dance in Brighton FAQ

Everything you need to know before your first class.

Where are the Brighton street dance classes held? +

In central studios a short walk from Brighton station, with children's groups spread across Hove, Portslade and the outer suburbs. Book a place and the studio and its parking reach you by email, each within reach of a bus route or a short walk from the seafront.

How much does a street dance class in Brighton cost? +

£8 a drop-in — no membership, no block pinning you down, so drop in whenever suits the week. Once a studio settles a regular night, discounted blocks become available to anyone happy to commit.

What separates street dance from your hip-hop class? +

Street dance is the broad umbrella, rotating locking, popping, breaking and house through the term; the hip-hop class concentrates on that one dance's grooves and choreography. Plenty of Brighton dancers take both and let one sharpen the other.

I have never danced before — can I manage? +

With ease. The starter sessions are mostly beginners; nobody shows up able to break. It begins on the groove, the simple bounce anyone finds in a track, and everything grows from there at the room's own pace.

What should I wear for street dance? +

Something you can move and sweat in, plus flat trainers with a little spring in the sole. Street culture is about how you hold yourself, so past that, wear what feels like you and nobody gives it a thought.

Do you cover breaking? +

We do — top rock, footwork and starter freezes come round alongside locking, popping and house. If breaking is the one that hooks you, we will point you toward the Brighton jams where it thrives.

Which ages can do street dance in Brighton? +

The main adult class welcomes anyone 17 and over, while teens and children from six upward have their own groups, every one under a DBS-checked teacher. Note your age band on the enquiry form and we will slot you in correctly.

Can you bring street dance to a Brighton school or party? +

We can. Our mobile team runs workshops, birthday sessions and youth-club dates across Brighton and Hove and out toward Portslade, Rottingdean and Shoreham. Add the venue to the enquiry form and we take care of the rest.

Will there genuinely be freestyle in class? +

There will — guided freestyle every week plus an optional closing cypher, never compulsory. It is where street dance stops being borrowed steps and becomes yours, and most people ease into the circle within a month or two.
