Class Structure

Beginners Class — 60 Minutes

0–10 mins

Warm-Up and Groove

We start on the move, waking the ankles, knees and ribcage until the bounce that underpins every street style is ticking over — no counts yet, just getting loose and riding the beat.

10–25 mins

One Style at a Time

Each week drops into a single strand — locking's freeze and snap, popping's hits, breaking's toprock and footwork, or house's fast travelling steps — so across a month you meet the whole family.

25–40 mins

Piece Together a Routine

That week's moves get stacked into a short combination over a funk or hip-hop break, and you drill it until it stops living in your head and starts living in your feet.

40–50 mins

Off the Counts

Guided freestyle games nudge you to move without a set plan — closing the gap between marking eight-counts and genuinely dancing, which is the whole point of the hour.

50–60 mins

Cypher and Stretch

We finish in a loose, take-it-or-leave-it circle where the room cheers whatever you throw down, then stretch out the legs and back before you head off.

About Street Dance Classes in Leicester

Street dance is the umbrella term for everything born on pavements, in clubs and at block parties rather than in a mirrored studio — popping, locking, breaking, house and more. Our street dance classes in Leicester move through all of it, taught by people who actually dance out on the city's own scene, so you can try every branch before choosing one to chase. Children, teenagers and grown-ups each get a slot of their own.

It suits Leicester, too. This is a compact two-university city with more than 35,000 students, so classes fill with newcomers and the energy stays young. The Cultural Quarter around Rutland Street — Leicester's creative district of studios, bars and makers — is the natural home for it, a few minutes' walk from the station and the Highcross.

You need no background whatsoever; everyone opens with a groove that takes minutes to feel. Sessions run at partner studios in the city centre and the Cultural Quarter, easy to reach on foot or by bus since Leicester has no tram to bother with. Come in trainers and something loose.

Why Choose Street Dance in Leicester?

A Young, Buzzing Scene

Two universities and 35,000-plus students keep Leicester's street scene fresh and easy to walk into — there are jams and battles to watch or jump into once you've found your feet.

Every Strand Gets a Turn

Popping, locking, house and breaking each take the lead across a term, so you get a genuine go at all four before deciding which one is worth going deep on.

All Ages On Board

Ages are grouped from six upward with DBS-checked coaches on every session — the children's classes book out first, and jittery adults find their feet just as quickly as the youngsters.

A City That Performs

Leicester throws Britain's longest-running comedy festival every February and packs Victoria Park for homecoming gigs — you're learning to move in a place used to putting on a show and finding a stage.

Your Street Dance Journey

From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.

Week 1–4

Getting the Groove

The bounce comes first

Before any named move, the early weeks are spent just riding the beat and getting comfortable letting your body answer it.

Simple, repeatable moves

A handful of foundational grooves and party steps go in, enough to string a few eight-counts together and feel like you're dancing.

Month 2–3

Sampling the Styles

One family a time

Popping, locking, house and breaking each get their own weeks, so you feel how differently each one sits in the body.

Cleaner, sharper

The moves stop being rough copies and start landing on the beat with intent, hits and freezes arriving where you mean them to.

Month 4–6

Finding a Voice

Freestyle without fear

Guided improv becomes a regular fixture, and the panic of an empty count fades as you learn to trust what comes out.

Your own flavour

You start leaning towards the strand that fits you and layering in personal texture rather than only reproducing the routine.

Month 6+

Out on the Scene

Into the cypher

By now the class circle feels normal, and Leicester's jams and open sessions stop looking intimidating and start looking fun.

Keep going

Whether you want to perform, battle or just keep the weekly habit, there's a lane and a room for it in a student-heavy city.

Street Dance in Leicester FAQ

Everything you need to know before your first class.

Do I need any experience to start street dance? +

None at all. Every class opens with a groove you can pick up in a few minutes, and beginners' sessions are full of people on their first night. You build everything from the ground up here — nobody expects you to arrive knowing moves.

How is street dance different from your hip-hop classes? +

Street dance is the umbrella; hip-hop is one accent under it. Our street sessions rotate through popping, locking, breaking and house so you meet the whole spread, whereas the hip-hop class digs specifically into grooves, party dances and choreography. Plenty of people take both.

Whereabouts in Leicester are the street dance classes? +

Partner studios in the city centre and the Cultural Quarter around Rutland Street, both a short walk from Leicester station and the Highcross. You'll get the exact room when you book; the middle of town is easiest on foot.

What does a class cost in Leicester? +

It's £8 for a drop-in, and a block works out cheaper once your session has a fixed weekly slot. No membership, no joining fee — you pay for the classes you actually turn up to.

What should I wear? +

Trainers with a bit of grip and clothes you can move freely in — joggers, a tee, layers you can peel off once you warm up. No special kit, and definitely no need to look the part before you start.

What ages do you teach? +

From six upwards, grouped by age so the room matches the person. The younger children's classes are our most popular, but we run dedicated teen and adult sessions too, and the adult beginners' group is a friendly place to start late.

Will I get to learn breaking? +

Yes — breaking gets its own weeks in the rotation, starting with toprock and footwork on your feet before anything near the floor. You go at your own pace; nobody's flinging you upside down in week one.

Is there a street scene in Leicester to get involved with? +

There is. Two universities and tens of thousands of students keep jams, battles and open sessions ticking over, and your teachers can point you at what's on once you fancy watching or joining in.

Do you bring street dance to schools and venues around Leicester? +

We do — across Leicester and out into Leicestershire, from Loughborough to Market Harborough, for schools, clubs and parties. Tell us the group and the space and we'll build a session to fit.
