Class Structure
Beginners Class — 60 Minutes
No Warm-Up Lull
The dancing begins immediately — a warm-up that loosens the joints and sinks you into the groove of the track, so the constant bounce every street style sits on is already running before the first minute is done.
One Branch a Week
Each session locks onto a single style and goes deep — locking's crisp freezes, popping's hits, house footwork, breaking's top rock — so over four weeks you get a real feel for the whole family in turn.
Stacking a Routine
The week's moves gather into a short routine over breaks drawn from funk, hip-hop and house. We run it on a loop until it sinks into the body and the counting quietly falls away by itself.
Nothing Rehearsed
Then come the freestyle games, danced with no plan at all. That leap from copying a step to inventing one is the exact moment the session tips over from exercise into genuine dancing.
The Cypher
A relaxed circle to close — step in or watch, entirely your call — where you can let go for a crowd that cheers everything, capped with a proper stretch so you leave loose rather than stiff.
About Street Dance Classes in Coventry
Street dance is not one style but a whole extended family — the umbrella over everything that grew up in clubs, at house parties and on pavements rather than in front of a studio mirror: popping, locking, breaking, house and a spread of relatives. Our Coventry classes cover the lot, taught by people still out dancing in the scene, so you get a fair crack at each before choosing one. Ages mix too, with separate kids', teens' and adults' groups — and in our street dance classes in Coventry, walking in with zero experience is simply standard.
Few cities have a stronger claim to this music than Coventry. This is where 2 Tone was born — Jerry Dammers started the 2 Tone label here in 1979, The Specials and The Selecter both formed in the city, and the black-and-white ska revival they kicked off carried a loud message of unity when the country badly needed one. UK City of Culture in 2021 poured new confidence into all of that, and two universities keep the creative quarters young — FarGo Village on Far Gosford Street most of all.
You need nothing to begin; it all launches from a bounce you will find inside a minute or two. Studios cluster near Broadgate in the centre, at FarGo Village and along Spon Street, each a short walk or a single hop inside the ring road, while our travelling crew reaches the rest of greater Coventry. Just turn up in trainers and clothes you can genuinely throw around.

Why Choose Street Dance in Coventry?
The Home of 2 Tone
Coventry handed the world The Specials, The Selecter and the 2 Tone label — an entire movement built on rhythm and unity. A style this rooted in the beat feels right at home in the city that actually invented one of Britain's.
A Real Go at Each Style
Across a term you spend proper hours on every branch — popping, locking, house, breaking — enough to feel the differences yourself and pick a lane deliberately, rather than drifting into whichever one you happened to meet first.
From Age Six Upward
Age-banded groups run from six and up, each one led by a DBS-checked coach. The children's classes are the busiest thing we run, and even the wariest adults tend to warm to it just as fast.
A City Mid-Renaissance
Fresh from being UK City of Culture in 2021, Coventry's creative quarters around FarGo Village and the two universities stay busy and open-doored, so a stage, a jam or an audience to test yourself against is rarely far off when you want one.
Your Street Dance Journey
From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.
Catching the Groove
The First Weeks
Day one is the bounce and the rock, dusted with a little top rock and some locking. At the start it is all about finding the groove and losing the nerves — the sharp, exact shapes can wait their turn.
What to Turn Up In
Loose bottoms, a tee and flat trainers with a bit of spring. Comfort first; after that the culture runs on personal style, so genuinely, wear whatever feels most like you on the day.
Getting to Know It
Foundations
You go deeper into each branch one at a time — locking, popping, house, breaking — working out what each asks of your body and which ones click for you the soonest.
First Freestyle
A little guided improvising builds the nerve to move with no plan underneath you — the single skill the whole of street dance is propped up on.
A Flavour of Your Own
Your Style Shows
Freestyles stretch out, routines tighten up, and the first flickers of movement that is plainly yours start showing through the copied steps.
Part of the Crew
The circle stops feeling like a test and starts feeling like home ground; by now you belong to a culture rather than just attending a weekly class.
Into the Scene
Battle-Ready
At ease across every branch, unfazed when a battle breaks out, and building combinations of your own — the invention this culture prizes over everything else going.
What's Next
The region's jams and battles to throw yourself into, our in-house contests for a genuine nerve test, or going all-in on whichever branch has properly grabbed you.
Street Dance in Coventry FAQ
Everything you need to know before your first class.
Do I need experience to walk in? +
None whatsoever. The class opens on the bounce — a groove you will have inside a minute — and grows from there. Look around a beginners' session and hardly anyone has danced before; over-18s and complete first-timers are the core of the adult room.
How is this different from your hip-hop class? +
Street is the broad umbrella, rotating through popping, house, locking, breaking and more over a term. Hip-hop zooms in on hip-hop alone — its grooves, party dances and choreography. A lot of dancers take both and find each one sharpens the other.
What ages do you teach in Coventry? +
Adults run from 17 to 75. There is a separate teens' group for 15s and 16s, then a 9–14 band and a 6–8 band under that, each with a DBS-checked coach. Mark your age on the form and we will aim you at the right class.
Where in Coventry do the classes run? +
At partner studios near Broadgate in the centre, at FarGo Village on Far Gosford Street and along Spon Street, with the kids' groups reaching further across greater Coventry. Each is a short walk or one hop inside the ring road, and your exact address follows once you enrol.
What does it cost? +
£8 a drop-in, nothing to join and no contract holding you down — come whenever it works. Cheaper blocks appear later, once your nearest studio locks in its regular weekly slot.
What should I wear? +
Loose, movable clothing and flat trainers with a little cushioning. Beyond that, self-expression is the entire spirit of it, so honestly — turn up as whatever feels most you. That is rather the whole point.
Will I get to learn breaking? +
You will. The breaking weeks take in top rock, footwork, freezes and drops, right alongside house, popping and locking. If it grabs you, Coventry's young scene around FarGo Village and the two universities is there to dive into, and we will point the way.
What makes Coventry good for street dance? +
Music and youth, mainly. This is the birthplace of 2 Tone — The Specials, The Selecter, the whole ska revival — freshly lifted by City of Culture 2021, with two big universities keeping FarGo Village and the creative quarters young and open to anyone who fancies a try.
Can you bring sessions to schools and venues around Coventry? +
We can. Our travelling team runs school assemblies, birthday parties and youth-club workshops across greater Coventry and Warwickshire — Earlsdon, Foleshill, Tile Hill, Bedworth, Nuneaton, Kenilworth and beyond. Add your venue to the enquiry form and we will arrange it.
