How Your Thriller Party Runs

Rise from the warm-up

Your choreographer arrives at the studio or your accommodation and eases the group in with isolations, shoulder rolls and the all-important zombie posture. Stiff necks from last night's cocktails are, for once, an advantage.

Learn the legendary routine

The real Thriller choreography, broken into beginner-sized sections: the shuffle, the claw hands, the head snaps and the iconic side-step formations. Everyone learns it; nobody is left lurching alone.

The filmed graveyard finale

The full routine is performed and filmed in proper horror-movie formation, bride front and centre. It looks genuinely brilliant on camera — and even better at the wedding reception.

Why a Thriller Hen Do?

Thriller is the one routine on Earth that strangers will join in with uninvited — which tells you everything about how deep it runs. Michael Jackson's 1982 album and its 1983 short film gave the world choreography so recognisable that two bars of zombie shuffle gets a cheer in any room. For a hen party, that means instant recognition, guaranteed laughter and a finished video that looks far more impressive than the effort suggests.

The routine draws directly on the short film's graveyard choreography — the lurching walk, the synchronised claw hands, the sharp head snaps and those famous travelling side-steps. It reads as complicated but breaks down into simple, repeatable blocks, which is exactly why flash mobs love it. Your choreographer can also fold in nods to the moonwalk and other MJ signatures for the confident hens.

Britain gave this routine a proper second life. Thriller Live ran for eleven years at the Lyric Theatre in the West End, clocking more than 4,600 performances before closing in 2020, and UK crowds still join worldwide mass Thriller dances every October. Book it for a Halloween-adjacent hen do or a plain Saturday in June — undead formalwear works year-round.

The only dance routine with its own annual worldwide re-enactment — and your hen party is about to join the club.

Thriller

The graveyard routine itself — the shuffle, the claws, the head snaps. The main event and the finale, obviously.

Beat It

Gang-formation strutting and sharp unison hits: the section where the hens face off across the room.

Billie Jean

Hat tilts, toe stands and light-up-pavement attitude — a slick solo-flavoured section for the brave.

Smooth Criminal

Fedoras, sharp lines and the famous forward lean — attempted here at a strictly beginner-friendly angle.

Bad

Full late-80s attitude: strong shapes, group formations and maximum committed scowling.

The Moonwalk

The signature glide, taught as an optional party trick — sock-friendly floors dramatically improve success rates.

Thriller Facts Worth Repeating

The best-seller, full stop

Thriller is the best-selling album of all time, with worldwide sales estimated at around 70 million copies since its release in 1982.

A 13-minute film

The Thriller video, directed by John Landis in 1983, runs close to 14 minutes and was conceived as a proper short film rather than a standard music video.

A national treasure — officially

In 2009 Thriller became the first music video ever selected for preservation in the US National Film Registry at the Library of Congress.

Eleven years in the West End

Thriller Live celebrated Jackson's music at London's Lyric Theatre from 2009 to 2020, playing more than 4,600 performances across its record-breaking run.

Thriller Questions, Answered

How much does a Thriller hen party dance class cost?

One flat rate: £140 for an hour or £165 for ninety minutes, plus the venue. The price covers the whole group whatever its size — undead extras cost nothing extra.

Is the real Thriller routine too hard for beginners?

No — it's famously learnable, which is why flash mobs across the world perform it every year. Your choreographer teaches the authentic moves in small blocks, and the zombie styling is very forgiving: stiff and clumsy is literally the brief.

Do you supply zombie costumes or face paint?

We supply the choreographer and the routine; costumes, face paint and props are the group's department. Ripped formalwear and a cheap face-paint palette go a long way — groups usually get ready together before the class as part of the fun.

Can the class happen at our hen party house?

Yes. Your choreographer comes to your accommodation if there's space to move, or we book a partner studio in your city — we cover 67 across the UK. Either way the flat rate stays the same and everything is confirmed up front.
