Class Structure

Beginners Class — 60 Minutes

0–10 mins

Loosening Into the Beat

We spend the first stretch shedding stiffness and hunting the pulse. Joints get rolled through, the weight sinks low, and we lock onto the bounce that quietly underpins locking, popping and everything else. Get your knees riding that beat on autopilot and the rest of the hour turns into play.

10–25 mins

One Pillar, Held

There is no gallop through four styles a night. A single foundation takes the floor — locking's sharp catches one week, house footwork or breaking's top rock the next — and we sit with it long enough for your body to still own it seven days later, rather than losing it by the car park.

25–40 mins

Assembling the Run

The week's vocabulary gets bolted into a short sequence over a track with some weight to it. We repeat it, then repeat it again — not to grind you down, but because that is precisely how choreography leaves your head and takes up residence in your legs.

40–50 mins

Off the Script

Then the routine disappears. Brief bursts of guided freestyle, an optional trade for the bold, and the slow realisation that you can move with no plan in front of you. It spooks almost everyone at first and wins most of them round within a month.

50–60 mins

Circle, Then Ease Down

We close in a cypher — jump in or hold the rim and clap, forever your choice — before stretching the graft out of your legs. A warm, unjudged handful of minutes, and about the nearest thing street dance keeps to a full stop, before you head back toward Drake Circus.

About Street Dance Classes in Plymouth

Street dance here rests on solid local ground. Rhythm City CIC runs authentic hip-hop history, breaking and popping from the Oxford House Creative Hub in Stonehouse, carrying keen dancers all the way to a Level 3 diploma, while The Groovement Project keeps the city's crews out and about. Whoever takes your session is still competing and performing in their own right.

Over a term you cover the entire family — locking, popping, breaking, house — meeting street dance as a wide culture rather than one trick paraded as the whole thing. Our separate hip-hop class hones in on its own grooves and choreography, and no small number of dancers sign up for both, swearing each one improves the other.

Every age gets its own room — children, teens and adults apart, each led by a working, DBS-checked dancer — and Dance Factory over on Buckwell Street is proof of how much adult provision the city holds. The studios are central, an easy walk or Citybus ride from Plymouth station, there is no tram to lean on, and a drop-in costs £8.

Why Choose Street Dance in Plymouth?

Foundations to Diploma

Plymouth offers a real ladder, not a solitary weekly class. Rhythm City CIC takes dancers from genuine hip-hop foundations through breaking and popping to a Level 3 diploma out of Stonehouse, so there is a proper next rung if the culture takes hold of you — and your coach can walk you straight to it.

Meet Every Style First

Locking, popping, breaking and house each get their week in the light, so you leave with a rounded vocabulary rather than a single showpiece. Should one grip you above the others, we are glad to let you specialise — but only once you have shaken hands with all four.

The Right Room for Your Age

Grown-ups have their own class, with teen and children's groups on either side, every one steered by a DBS-checked dancer who still performs. Nobody is left adrift in a session pitched at the wrong tempo for them, whatever age walks through the door.

Out Across Devon and Cornwall

The mobile team carries street sessions into schools, parties and youth clubs around the city and beyond — Plympton, Plymstock, Saltash and further afield. Leave a postcode on the form and we will find a date that bends around your plans.

Your Street Dance Journey

From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.

Weeks 1–4

Catching the Bounce

Early Doors

That opening month lives on rhythm — learning to sit inside a beat comfortably before any crisp technique arrives. A little top rock, one clean lock, and beneath the surface the genuine aim: dancing that no longer feels like a spotlight is trained on you.

Kitting Up

Trackies or joggers, a top with room to move, flat trainers with a touch of cushioning under the heel. Comfort leads, and because a slice of street is simply how you carry yourself, rocking up dressed like yourself is already worth a point or two.

Months 2–3

Style by Style

Under the Microscope

Now each style claims its own window and the differences jump right out — popping's coiled tension against house's flying feet, locking beside breaking. A couple click on contact, a couple resist you, and untangling which is where much of the enjoyment hides.

First Time Improvising

Freestyle turns up in careful, bite-sized portions. Dancing with no fixed steps looms large to begin with, but it is the ground the entire form is built on, and the jitters shrink a notch with every week you keep coming back.

Months 4–6

A Flavour of Your Own

Your Signature

Freestyles lengthen, combinations sharpen, and borrowed steps slowly acquire a stamp that reads as unmistakably yours. Out on the floor you are choosing now, no longer just echoing whatever the front of the room threw out.

Part of the Furniture

Comfortable in the circle and recognised by name — street folds you in rather than merely booking you a slot, and by this stage Plymouth's scene has quietly cleared a space for you.

Month 6+

Running Free

It Flows

Slipping between styles costs you nothing, a battle igniting nearby barely lifts your pulse, and you are stitching moves together off no one's handout. That knack for inventing on the spot is precisely what the culture rates over immaculate lines.

The Road On

Some pursue the style that lodged deepest toward Rhythm City's diploma route, some get nudged into the city's jams and our own battles, and some simply keep circling the family because it is a joy. Your coaches dance those floors and know the people worth knowing.

Street Dance in Plymouth FAQ

Everything you need to know before your first class.

Not danced a step in your life — will that hold you back? +

Not in the slightest. The whole thing is built off a basic rock-and-bounce most people catch in the first few minutes, with one layer added each session. First-timer nights are packed with folk in your exact shoes, so arriving cold is business as usual, not the exception.

Is Plymouth honestly a good city for street dance? +

It really is. Rhythm City CIC teaches hip-hop foundations, breaking and popping up to a Level 3 diploma from Stonehouse, and The Groovement Project keeps the crews out in the open. It is a working scene, and rather than run in isolation we drop you right into it.

How does this differ from the hip-hop class? +

Street dance is the wide umbrella; hip-hop is one panel beneath it. Here we rotate the full spread — locking, popping, breaking, house — while the hip-hop class stays fixed on hip-hop's grooves, party steps and choreography. Loads of people do the pair and find they feed one another.

Where in Plymouth do the classes run? +

At partner studios around the centre and Stonehouse, with children's sessions reaching wider across the area. With no tram in the city it is Citybus, Stagecoach or a short walk from Plymouth station, and your precise venue is nailed down the instant you book.

What am I paying? +

£8 on arrival — no membership, no contract, just show up when the week allows. The moment your nearest studio locks in a regular weekly slot, we release discounted block bookings for anyone keen to keep it rolling.

Any dress code? +

Wear what you can genuinely shift about in and flat trainers with a bit of bounce. After that, personal style is half the point of street, so turn up looking however feels like you — the look is stitched into the dance, not bolted on afterwards.

Do I get to have a go at breaking? +

Definitely — top rock, footwork and freezes all take their turn in the mix beside locking, popping and house. If breaking is the one that grabs you, Rhythm City's Stonehouse sessions are the natural step up, and your coach will happily connect you.

Will I be made to freestyle in front of the room? +

Only if you fancy it. We wind up on a loose circle where you can leap in or stay on the edge and clap — that call is yours every single round. Most people watch a while, then take a turn once it lands that nobody is marking them.

Can you bring street dance to our school or party? +

Certainly. The mobile crew runs sessions in schools, birthdays and youth clubs across Plymouth and out through the South West — Plympton, Plymstock, Saltash and past them. Add the venue to the form and we will get a date pencilled in around you.
