Beginners Class — 60 Minutes
Warm Up Into the Bounce
We get moving immediately — a warm-up that opens the joints and drops you onto the beat. That low bounce and rock underpinning every street style is going from minute one.
A Different Style Each Week
Every session picks one style and digs in — the sharp freeze of locking, the hit of popping, breaking's top rock or house's fast footwork — so across a month you meet the whole spread.
Stacking a Routine
The week's moves get built into a short piece over funk, house or hip-hop breaks and drilled until your body fires it off automatically and you can stop counting in your head.
Off the Script
Improvisation games get you dancing with nothing planned — and that jump, from copying steps to making your own, is honestly where dancing begins.
Cypher and Cool Down
A relaxed, optional circle lets you drop a move for a crowd that'll cheer whatever you try, then a solid stretch draws the session to a close.
About Street Dance Classes in Manchester
There's no single street dance — the term gathers up everything born on the club floor, at the party and on the corner instead of in a mirrored studio: popping, locking, breaking, house and the rest of the family. Our classes cover the range, led by dancers who are still out in the scene, so you get a real go at each before picking a favourite. And the room mixes every age, with groups for kids, teens and adults.
Beginners are simply the norm in our street dance classes in Manchester. Not many cities carry the swagger this one does — Manchester is Britain's guitar-band capital, the place where Factory Records and the Haçienda dragged indie bands onto the dancefloor and gave the country its attitude. That hunger to perform is a perfect match for funk, house and hip-hop.
You need nothing to begin — it all starts from a bounce that clicks in minutes. Our studios sit around the city centre, the Northern Quarter and Ancoats, a short walk or tram from Piccadilly and Victoria, while the mobile team reaches the wider region, out to Salford, Stockport, Oldham and Trafford. Turn up in trainers and something you can move in freely.

Why Choose Street Dance in Manchester?
Coached by Working Dancers
Your teachers are out dancing Manchester's own jams and battles, passing on the foundations between gigs — not instructors reciting moves from a handbook.
The Whole Family, in Turn
Over a term you'll put real hours into popping, locking, house and breaking one at a time — enough of each to feel the differences and choose your path knowingly.
Six Right Up to Sixty
Classes are grouped by age from six upward, every one under a DBS-checked coach. The children's sessions are the busiest thing we run, and jittery adults tend to relax into it just as quickly.
The City's Swagger
This is the guitar-band town that shoved indie onto the dancefloor, and that cocky, stage-ready spirit is exactly what street dance runs on — with jam nights on hand once you want an audience.
Your Street Dance Journey
From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.
Onto the Bounce
Getting Started
We start on the bounce and rock, then touch top rock and a little locking. Early days are about feeling the beat and losing the nerves — neat, precise shapes can wait their turn.
What to Wear
Loose bottoms, a t-shirt and flat trainers with a bit of cushion. Sort comfort first; after that the culture is all about personal style, so honestly, wear whatever feels most like you.
Trying the Styles
Foundations
You dig further into each strand — locking, popping, house, breaking — finding out what each demands of your body and, usefully, which ones fit you best.
First Freestyle
A bit of structured improvising grows the nerve to dance with no choreography to fall back on — the single skill everything else in street dance is built over.
Your Own Voice
Finding a Voice
The freestyles run longer, the routines get harder, and the first hints of movement that's unmistakably yours begin to show.
Belonging
The circle stops being a test and starts feeling like home; you're a proper part of the group by now, in a culture you've joined rather than a class you drop into.
Into the Scene
Battle-Ready
Comfortable across every strand, unfazed when a battle starts, and inventing combinations of your own — the originality this culture rates most highly.
What's Next
Manchester's jam and battle nights, our in-house competitions if you want to test yourself, or committing fully to whichever strand ended up claiming you.
Street Dance in Manchester FAQ
Everything you need to know before your first class.
Do I need any experience for street dance? +
Not a bit. Everything kicks off from the bounce — a groove that lands in a minute or two — and grows from there. Look around a beginners' class and most people have hardly danced before either.
Where in Manchester do the street dance classes happen? +
At partner studios around the city centre, the Northern Quarter and Ancoats, with kids' groups spread more widely across the region. Each sits a short walk or tram ride from Piccadilly or Victoria, and you get the exact address once you've signed up.
What's the cost of a street dance class in Manchester? +
£8 a drop-in, with no sign-up and no tie-in, so you come when you're able. Cheaper blocks arrive later, once your nearest studio locks in its regular weekly slot.
Which ages do you take? +
Adult classes run 17 to 75, there's a teen group for 15s and 16s, and two younger sets cover 9–14 and 6–8 — all under DBS-checked coaches. Put your age on the form and we'll steer you to the right one.
Should I pick street dance or hip-hop? +
Read street as the wide umbrella, cycling through locking, popping, house and breaking over a term. The hip-hop class narrows onto hip-hop itself — its grooves, party dances and set routines. Plenty of dancers take both and find each feeds the other.
What do I wear? +
Roomy, movable clothes and flat trainers with some cushion. Past that, self-expression is the whole spirit of it, so genuinely — turn up dressed however feels truest to you.
Do we get to learn breaking? +
For sure. The breaking weeks cover top rock, footwork, freezes and go-downs, right alongside house, popping and locking. If it really takes hold, Manchester's jam nights are the obvious next step and we'll point the way.
Why is Manchester good for street dance? +
It's young, mixed and mad for performing. This is the guitar-band city that handed Britain its swagger, from Factory Records to the Haçienda, and that showy, front-foot energy suits funk, house and hip-hop down to the ground.
Do you run street dance in schools and venues around Manchester? +
We do — the mobile crew takes assemblies, birthday parties and youth-club sessions right across Greater Manchester, out to Salford, Stockport, Oldham and further. Just note your venue on the form and we'll handle the rest.
