Class Structure
Beginners Class — 60 Minutes
Groove foundation
Bounce-and-groove warm-up shared across all the street styles — the common engine before the week's style puts its bodywork on.
Style focus
A rotating deep-dive: locking's points and pauses one block, popping's hits the next, house footwork after that — each taught with its history attached.
Choreography
A routine built in the current focus style, section by section to music — where the technique gets spent on something you can actually perform.
Sessions and swaps
Small groups run the routine while the rest watch and cheer, then swap — plus an open-floor minute for anyone who wants to play with the vocabulary.
Wind down
Stretch, breathe, and a thirty-second preview of next week's style — the cliffhanger format that keeps the register healthy.
About Street Dance Classes in Cambridge
Street dance is the umbrella over a family of styles — locking, popping, house, waacking and more — each born from a specific scene with its own music, technique and manners. Our Cambridge classes teach the family properly: rotating style focuses with the history told straight, plus choreography that puts each style's vocabulary to work.
The class is adult-first and beginner-honest. You don't need swagger in advance — the styles supply it — and the rotating format means nobody is ever more than a few weeks from a fresh start. What accumulates is range: within a few months you can hear a funk track, a boogaloo groove or a house beat and know what your body is supposed to do about it.
£8 a session, trainers on, history included at no extra charge.

Why Choose Street Dance in Cambridge?
Many styles, one class
Locking, popping, house and more in rotation — the widest movement education on the timetable, with each style taught from its roots.
Culture, credited
Every style arrives with its origin story told properly — who made it, where and why — because technique without context is karaoke.
Fresh starts built in
The rotating focus means newcomers can join at any block and be level with the room within weeks — the format forgives late arrival.
£8 flat
Pay per session at £8 — no terms, and every style block is included in the same price.
Your Street Dance Journey
From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.
The engine installs
Groove first
The shared bounce under all street styles becomes second nature — the single skill that makes every later style cheaper to learn.
First style badge
Your first block completed — a locker's points or a popper's first hits, danced to music and visibly yours.
Range opens
Styles stack
Two or three styles into the rotation, your body has modes — and switching between them is its own increasingly enjoyable skill.
Choreo fluency
Routine sections land faster each block as the shared vocabulary compounds underneath them.
Personality shows
A favourite emerges
Everyone falls for one style hardest — the funk kids, the house heads, the waacking devotees all discover themselves here.
Open floor courage
The optional play minutes stop being spectated and start being used — improvisation arriving through the side door.
Into the scene
Deeper water available
Jams, battles and style-specific workshops around the region become realistic next steps for those who want them.
Range as identity
A year in, you're the dancer who can answer any track — the umbrella's whole promise, kept.
Street Dance in Cambridge FAQ
Everything you need to know before your first class.
Where do the Cambridge street dance classes run? +
At a studio on the station and Mill Road side of town — straightforward by train, bus or bike. The exact address is confirmed at booking.
What does it cost? +
£8 a session, pay as you attend — every style block included, nothing extra to buy.
Is this the same as the hip-hop class? +
They're siblings — the hip-hop class goes deep on one culture's grooves and choreography, while this class rotates across the wider street family: locking, popping, house and beyond. Plenty of dancers do both; the foundations feed each other.
I'm a complete beginner. Can I join mid-rotation? +
Yes — each style block starts from its own fundamentals, so a newcomer joining at the start of any block is level with the room within a couple of weeks. The format is built to forgive late arrival.
Will we do breaking? +
The standing styles are the core here — breaking's floor work needs its own dedicated training environment. What you build in this class, especially the grooves and music knowledge, is the right foundation if breaking calls you later.
What should I wear? +
Cushioned trainers and loose, comfortable streetwear — house footwork in particular rewards a shoe you'd happily bounce in for an hour.
What music will we train to? +
Each style's own canon — 70s funk for locking, boogaloo-era tracks for popping, classic and current house for house — because the music isn't backing, it's the teacher.
Is there freestyle, and is it compulsory? +
There's an open-floor minute most weeks and it's permanently optional — watched happily, joined voluntarily, and usually adopted by everyone within a term because the vocabulary makes it fun rather than frightening.
