Class Structure

Beginners Class — 60 Minutes

0-10 min

Shake The Rust Off

Light cardio and slow isolations wake the chest, hips and shoulders up one region at a time, so your body is warm and unlocked well before you take a single travelling step across the floor.

10-25 min

Settle The Bounce

Everything in hip-hop rides on the bounce, so we drill it on a soft, bent knee alongside a rock step and a two-step - the social basics you can lean on at any party long after the routine has faded.

25-35 min

Where It Came From

A short breather to place the dance beside the DJing, the emceeing and the writing it grew up next to. Newport knows all about many separate voices becoming one movement, and the cypher works the same way - individual steps folded into a shared circle.

35-50 min

Layer Tonight's Eight

We stack the evening's moves into a compact routine over something current, feeding it in a few counts at a time and dropping to half tempo until the whole room lands it together rather than in scattered pockets.

50-60 min

Take The Circle, Then Stretch

An optional freestyle circle lets anyone who fancies it spend a move, then we close on a full stretch so the walk back toward Commercial Street or the station feels loose instead of seized.

About Hip-Hop Classes in Newport

Newport's street scene has always run loudest through its young crews, school troupes and community sessions - the kind of grassroots energy a name like Rubicon Dance has carried around South Wales for decades. What the city has far less of is a plain, grown-up doorway in, and that is exactly the gap our hip-hop classes in Newport are built to fill: adult beginners, from zero, on the foundations the culture actually rests on.

You bring no crew, no history and no rhythm you can already name - trainers you can pivot in cover the entire kit list. Maybe the murals and the movement around John Frost Square have you curious, or maybe you simply want one midweek hour that finally beats another go on the treadmill; both are perfectly good reasons to stand in the back row on week one.

Every count comes apart slowly, a fumble bothers nobody, and each session costs a flat £8 settled at the door - no membership, no block to commit to. Drop in once, leave it a fortnight, or make it your standing Tuesday; the door stays open whichever you choose.

Why Choose Hip-Hop in Newport?

A Workout In Disguise

Sixty minutes of grooving, drilling and repeating torches energy like a gym circuit, yet your focus stays so locked on the count that you rarely notice the graft until the cool-down arrives.

Freestyle Loses Its Teeth

We fold small doses of improvising in from week one, so the freestyle circle stops being the bit you brace for and slowly becomes the bit you turn up early for.

Rooted In The City

The foundations taught here are the ones Newport's own youth crews and community sessions already run on, so a later jam or a different studio feels like familiar ground instead of square one.

Come As You Are

Turn up in whatever you can move in, bring trainers, and leave the backstory and the crew at home - this hour is pitched squarely at people who have genuinely never tried a street class before.

Your Hip-Hop Journey

From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.

First Session

Own The Bounce

One Thing, Done Well

The whole opening hour parks on one idea - the groove, bounced out of a soft knee. Land that sensation and every move you meet afterwards has firm ground to sit on.

Nothing To Fail

Counts stay short and get looped until they sink into the body, so you head home carrying a single groove that is fully, reliably your own.

Weeks 2-4

Moves Turn Into Runs

Stitching It Together

You begin joining a handful of moves into a short run and clocking the small transitions that carry you between them without a stumble.

A Flicker Of You

One step gets shown a few different ways and you start choosing which version to keep - the first hint of a personal style poking through.

Weeks 5-8

Pick Your Lane

Which Way You Lean

You can feel which strand pulls at you, and the drills start bending to suit - either toward groundwork and freezes or the crisp, front-to-camera commercial side.

Carry A Routine

Sequences lengthen and speed up, and you can see a full routine through at pace without a voice calling the numbers beside you.

Ongoing

Out Into The Scene

Chasing The Circle

The freestyle circle flips from an ordeal into the thing you turn up for, once you are sitting on a handful of moves that are begging to come out.

A Springboard

Plenty of our regulars use the hour as a launch pad into Newport's dedicated youth-led and community dance spaces once the basics feel secure.

Hip-Hop in Newport FAQ

Everything you need to know before your first class.

Do I need any hip-hop experience to start? +

Absolutely none. This class is pitched at the total newcomer, and every move is broken down slowly, held at a gentle tempo, and only quickened once it sits comfortably in the body.

Is this breaking, or the music-video style? +

You start where both begin - the grooves and social foundations underneath everything. Along the way you get a look at the floorwork side and the sharp, camera-facing commercial side, then follow whichever one pulls hardest at you.

What should I wear and bring? +

Something loose you can sweat in and trainers that let you turn - avoid chunky running soles that grip and stick. A water bottle earns its place, because the hour asks rather more of you than it first looks.

How much is a class? +

Eight pounds flat, settled at the door as you arrive. There is no sign-up, no bundle and no commitment, so a one-off visit, an occasional drop-in or a standing weekly slot are all equally welcome.

Where in Newport are the classes? +

Our rooms sit in central Newport - around Commercial Street, Friars Walk and the Riverfront - plus a riverside option out toward Maindee. It is a short walk from Newport (South Wales) station, and the exact studio, with parking notes, is confirmed once you book.

What is the difference between hip-hop and commercial? +

They come from different places. Street and hip-hop grew out of social dance, the cypher and years of lived culture; commercial is more of a stitched-together craft, drawing on jazz, contemporary and hip-hop to build the slick routines behind pop acts. Both sit on our timetable, so you can weigh the gap yourself.

Will we learn breaking? +

Mostly no. The hour centres on grooves, social foundations and assembling a routine. Breaking is the floor-based b-boy and b-girl craft with a deep technique all of its own - the odd element might sneak in, but it is not the focus here.

What music do you dance to? +

A broad mix of hip-hop and funk, vintage boom-bap through to current releases. One week might lean on classic groove-era cuts, the next on something fresh off the charts, with a party favourite dropped in to keep the room moving.

How do I get there and park? +

The centre is walkable from Newport (South Wales) station, and city-centre car parks like Friars Walk and Kingsway run into the evening. On a Dragons or Newport County match night the streets near Rodney Parade get busy, so leave a little extra time and we will flag it when it clashes.
