Class Structure

Beginners Class — 60 Minutes

0–10 min

Switch The Body On

We open on light cardio and slow isolation work, freeing up the shoulders, chest and hips one region at a time so your frame is loose long before any travelling begins.

10–25 min

Live In The Pocket

Now we settle into the groove. The bounce, a rock step and an easy two-step get drilled until they feel automatic — the everyday social moves that never rely on a set routine.

25–35 min

The Culture, Not Just Counts

A quick window on where the dance sits — beside the DJing, the beatboxing and the graffiti that Gloucester's Your Next Move builds its youth work around — so you learn foundations as culture rather than empty steps.

35–50 min

Stack Tonight's Routine

The night's material gets assembled into a compact routine set to something current, built up piece by piece and eased down to half tempo until everybody hits it as one.

50–60 min

Cypher, Then Cool Down

We finish with a voluntary freestyle circle for whoever wants to spend a move, and close on a thorough stretch so the walk back toward the Cross feels loose rather than seized.

About Hip-Hop Classes in Gloucester

Gloucester packs in more real hip-hop culture than a city its size has any right to, and our hip-hop classes in Gloucester exist to usher you toward that scene rather than fence you off from it. Your Next Move — the Guildhall-registered youth organisation that teaches dance alongside graffiti, beatboxing and DJing across the city — has kept all four elements breathing here for a younger generation. Think of us as the grown-up, start-from-zero doorway onto the same floor: fully independent of them, yet teaching the very vocabulary the culture rests on, so nothing you gather on a class night ever goes spare.

You will need no crew, no backstory and not a scrap of rhythm you can already point to — a pair of trainers you can spin in genuinely covers the kit list. Maybe the city's young crews have had you itching to join in, or maybe you just want one midweek hour that finally beats the gym; either works. Every count gets pulled apart slowly, the room shrugs off a fumble, and a single session costs a flat £8 settled at the door — less than a round at the Quays.

Why Choose Hip-Hop in Gloucester?

Cardio In Disguise

Sixty minutes of bounce, drills and repetition burns like circuit training, but your head is so deep in the routine that the graft barely registers.

Freestyle Without The Dread

We introduce improvising in small doses from day one, so by the time the circle comes round it has flipped from the part you dread into the part you look forward to.

Plugged Into Gloucester

You are learning the same foundations the city's own street and youth scene is built on, so stepping into a jam or another room later feels like coming back, not starting over.

Turn Up As You Are

Comfy clothes, clean trainers, no background and no crew — the beginners hour is designed squarely for the person who has never set foot in a street class.

Your Hip-Hop Journey

From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.

First Session

Settle Into The Pocket

It Starts On The Beat

The whole first hour sits in one place: the groove itself, ridden on a relaxed, bent knee. Nail that feeling and everything else you learn later has something to be built onto.

Nothing To Get Wrong

We keep each count short and repeat it until it sticks in the muscle, so you leave the room with one groove that is properly yours.

Weeks 2–4

Moves Become Phrases

Joining The Dots

You start stitching a handful of moves into a run and spotting the tiny transitions that shuttle you between them.

The First Flicker Of You

A single step gets demonstrated a few different ways, and you begin deciding which version is yours to keep — the first sign of a personal style surfacing.

Weeks 5–8

Pick A Direction

Which Way You Lean

You can now sense which strand appeals, and the exercises start bending your way — either into groundwork and freezes, or into the crisp, front-to-camera commercial style.

Hold A Routine

Combinations lengthen and quicken, and you can carry a thirty-two-count run at tempo without anyone reciting the numbers over your shoulder.

Ongoing

Into The Wider Scene

Chasing The Circle

The circle changes character — no longer a thing to endure but a thing you seek, now that you have a stock of moves and the itch to use them.

A Launch Pad

Plenty of our regulars go on to use the hour as a springboard into Gloucester's dedicated street and youth-led spaces once the basics feel secure.

Hip-Hop in Gloucester FAQ

Everything you need to know before your first class.

Do I need any hip-hop experience to start? +

Not in the slightest. The beginners hour is written for a total first-timer — each groove gets pulled apart at half speed and only sped up once it feels natural.

Is this breaking, or the music-video kind? +

Everyone opens on the grooves and foundations that sit under all of it. From there you get a sample of the floor-based breaking side and the polished commercial side, and you drift toward whichever one hooks you.

What should I wear and bring? +

Loose, comfortable kit and a pair of trainers with a bit of pivot in the sole — not heavy running grips. Pack a water bottle; you will work up a genuine sweat over the sixty minutes.

How much is a class? +

Every session is a flat £8, handed over when you arrive. No membership, no bundle to buy up front and nothing to sign, so you are free to try one, skip a few, or turn it into a weekly fixture.

Where in Gloucester are the classes? +

We run from central Gloucester studios around Eastgate, Westgate and the Cross, with a Docks-side option down by the Quays. Gloucester's railway station sits just east of the main shopping streets and the bus station is dead central; your confirmed room, with parking notes, arrives when you book.

What is the difference between hip-hop and commercial? +

Street dance and hip-hop carry their own lineage — born from social dancing, the cypher and decades of culture. Commercial pulls threads from hip-hop, jazz and contemporary to manufacture the polished numbers you see behind chart acts. We teach both, so the difference is easy to feel first-hand.

Will we learn breaking? +

Our sessions sit mostly on grooves, social foundations and building a routine. Breaking, the b-boy and b-girl floor discipline, runs on its own separate technique — we might borrow the odd element, but it isn't where the hour lives.

What music do you dance to? +

A broad spread of hip-hop and funk, from golden-era boom-bap to this month's drops. You will hear the likes of A Tribe Called Quest and Missy Elliott alongside newer artists and the odd party staple.

Are you linked to Your Next Move? +

No — we are an independent class. Your Next Move earns a mention because it shows how deep hip-hop culture runs in Gloucester, but there is no partnership between us, and our sessions stand entirely on their own.
