Class Structure

Beginners Class — 60 Minutes

0–10 mins

Loosen Up and Nod Along

Before anything technical, ten minutes of warming the body and getting the head moving to the track. It settles the nerves as much as the muscles — a floor full of strangers relaxes quickly once everyone is riding the same beat.

10–25 mins

Grooves and Party Moves

Hip-hop lives in its social dances, so every week we take one apart properly — its name, its era, how it should feel — until it genuinely belongs to you rather than sitting half-copied in the memory.

25–40 mins

Onto a Track

The night's material gets stacked into a short piece over a current hip-hop or pop record. The steps land fast enough; the graft is in catching the accents so the thing looks danced instead of counted out.

40–50 mins

Reply to the Beat

A spell of guided freestyle where the whole job is to listen and answer back. Nothing is marked, nothing is at stake — it is simply room to try ideas and build an instinct for the music.

50–60 mins

Run It, Then Recover

A last pass at full speed prints the routine into the muscles, and then we bring the calves and lower back down gently before you head back out into the toon.

About Hip-Hop Classes in Newcastle

Give hip-hop a full hour and it stops being a quick sampler move and turns into a craft you can build on. That is the whole idea in our hip-hop dance classes in Newcastle — the grooves, the party dances with real histories behind them, and choreography cut to hip-hop and today's charts, treated as one style worth studying rather than five styles skated across.

This is a city that writes its own soundtrack. Sam Fender carries the Geordie flag now, and behind him stretch Sting, Dire Straits and Lindisfarne — proof that Tyneside has always had an ear for a hook. You feel that same appetite in the room. We run from studios around Grey Street and the Monument, out in the Ouseburn creative quarter and up in Jesmond, and two universities keep every session busy and easy to slip into.

Most people walk in unable to string two moves together, and that is exactly the point we start from: the groove first, everything else stacked on afterwards. Drop-in is £8 with no sign-up, and under-18s get their own supervised, age-grouped classes. You will hear which studio is yours when your place is confirmed — nearly all sit a short walk or Metro ride from Monument.

Why Choose Hip-Hop in Newcastle?

Hip-Hop, Not a Sampler

Where a street-dance class laps quickly through locking, popping and breaking, this one plants itself in hip-hop and stays put — a single branch, handed enough time to actually sink in.

A City That Writes Its Own Songs

Newcastle keeps turning out music of its own, from Lindisfarne through to Sam Fender, and that feel for rhythm is close to standard issue here — it shows up on the floor every week.

A Young, Mixed Room

With Newcastle and Northumbria a few minutes away, the class stays full of people at much your level — the friendliest sort of crowd to be finding your feet in.

Under-18s Welcome

Younger dancers train in their own age brackets with DBS-checked teachers, and hip-hop is one of the quickest classes to book out on that side of the timetable.

Your Hip-Hop Journey

From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.

First Few Weeks

Finding the Feel

Where You Begin

All about the bounce, the rock and one first named dance. We chase an easy relationship with the beat — the crisp edges turn up later, mostly of their own accord.

What to Bring

Trackies or joggers, a top you do not mind sweating through, flat trainers with a bit of cushion. Personal style is welcome the moment you feel settled.

The First Term

Growing the Toolkit

More Moves

A new party dance most weeks, plus choreography that keeps sharpening, until your hits and pauses click neatly against the record playing under them.

Stepping Into Freestyle

Short improv drills arrive — a few counts of your own, call-and-response — building the nerve to move without a plan mapped out first.

A Few Months In

Your Own Signature

Moving Like You

Longer routines and freer freestyle, where you start bending the counts and leaving a mark that is unmistakably yours instead of copying the front row.

One of the Regulars

Happy to take the circle and known at the door — the class shifts from somewhere you visit to somewhere you plainly belong.

Further On

Standing on Your Own Two

Going Deeper

Harder choreography, a sharper ear, and freestyle solid enough to save you when a track throws something you never saw coming.

What's Next

Our showcases and events, or the battles and jams the student scene keeps alive — to enter or simply to watch, as the mood takes you.

Hip-Hop in Newcastle FAQ

Everything you need to know before your first class.

How is this different from your street dance class? +

Street dance is the umbrella — over a term it rolls through popping, locking, house and breaking. Hip-hop is one piece of that, and this hour lives entirely in it: the grooves, the nameable party dances, and choreography set to hip-hop and chart tracks. Plenty of people take both, one after the other.

I really can't dance — will I manage? +

You will. Everything grows out of that basic bounce, a layer at a time, and genuine beginners make up most of the starter room. You would be in the majority here, not the odd one out.

Whereabouts in Newcastle are the classes? +

Partner studios around Grey Street and the Monument, over in Ouseburn and up in Jesmond, with the under-18 groups spreading a little wider. You get your exact venue on booking, and most are a short walk or Metro ride from Monument.

Is a night more choreography or freestyle? +

Both, always. A typical session gives you a party dance or two and a run of choreography, then some steered improv — quick drills, nobody singled out. Within a few weeks most people are itching to get in the circle.

What should I wear? +

Loose kit you can sweat in and flat, cushioned trainers. Hip-hop has always cared about how you carry yourself, so once it is comfy and practical, turn up dressed however feels like you.

How much is a drop-in, and am I committed? +

£8 a session, paid on the night, no contract. Once your local studio locks a weekly time, cheaper multi-week blocks appear next to the pay-as-you-go rate.

Is there a hip-hop scene in Newcastle? +

There is — the crowd off Newcastle and Northumbria keeps it young and lively, and jams, battles and showcases surface through the year. When you are ready, your teacher will steer you to the right one.

Do you teach kids and teens? +

Yes — under-18s have age-grouped sessions with DBS-checked staff, and hip-hop is among the most-asked styles for that age. Note the age on the form and we will place you right.

Can you bring hip-hop to our venue? +

Of course — it travels. We set up youth sessions, birthday parties and school workshops across Tyneside, from Gateshead and Wallsend to Gosforth, Whitley Bay and North Shields. Flag your area on the form.
