Class Structure

Beginners Class — 60 Minutes

0–9 min

Bounce and rock

The two grooves everything else sits on, drilled to music until they live in the knees — hip-hop is a feel before it is ever a step.

9–24 min

Foundations

A party groove from the culture's history each week — running man, roger rabbit, the Bart — taught properly and credited to where it came from.

24–42 min

Choreography block

A section of the month's routine layered onto the grooves, count by count, with each pass to music slightly fuller than the last.

42–55 min

Cypher-lite

Small-group run-throughs and an optional, zero-pressure freestyle circle — sixteen counts of whatever you've got, cheered regardless of content.

55–60 min

Cool-down

Slow it down, stretch it out, and notice that the bounce keeps going faintly on the walk to the bike racks.

About Hip-Hop Classes in Cambridge

Hip-hop dance grew out of 1970s New York block parties — Black and Latino social dance, funk grooves and a culture of style built from the ground up. Our Cambridge classes teach it with that lineage intact: grooves first, named foundations second, choreography third, and the freestyle spirit running underneath the lot.

Cambridge's street dance provision skews young — its studios turn out excellent teenagers. Adults who fancy it are the underserved room, and this class is theirs: beginner-paced, credibly taught and entirely free of any cool threshold at the door. If you can nod your head to a beat, the rest is teachable.

£8 on the door, every time — there's no membership tier hiding behind it.

Why Choose Hip-Hop in Cambridge?

Adults, on purpose

A class built for grown-up beginners in a scene that mostly serves under-18s — same culture, adult pacing, zero self-consciousness tax.

Foundations with names

The classic moves are taught as the culture teaches them — named, dated and credited — so your vocabulary is real, not approximate.

Freestyle, decriminalised

The optional weekly circle turns improvisation from a fear into a habit, sixteen friendly counts at a time.

£8 flat

Every class £8, pay on the door — the most affordable hour of coaching in the building, no strings anywhere.

Your Hip-Hop Journey

From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.

01

Finding the pocket

Groove becomes default

Bounce and rock stop being instructions and start being how your body hears music — the real week-one-to-month-one shift.

First foundations

Two or three named party grooves, danceable at any family event with devastating effect.

02

Vocabulary and chains

The catalogue grows

Foundations accumulate weekly and start chaining into each other — your recall gets faster and your transitions get smoother.

Choreo confidence

Full sixty-four-count sections danced to music without the mirror's help — memory doing what it's trained for.

03

Style enters

Texture and dynamics

Hitting harder here, floating there — the same steps start carrying intention, which is what style actually is.

The circle warms up

Freestyle stops being survived and starts being enjoyed — sixteen counts becomes not quite enough.

04

In the culture

Your lane appears

Party grooves, choreo precision or freestyle flow — you find which corner of hip-hop is most yours and lean in.

Beyond the class

Jams, battles and socials exist across the region for anyone curious — and the class is a far better scout than the internet.

Hip-Hop in Cambridge FAQ

Everything you need to know before your first class.

Where do the Cambridge hip-hop classes happen? +

At a studio on the station and Mill Road side of town — easy off a train or a bike. The exact address is confirmed with your booking.

How much is a class? +

£8 on the door, every time — there's no membership tier hiding behind it and no block booking required.

I'm an adult beginner. Is this actually for me? +

It's specifically for you — Cambridge's street scene is excellent but youth-heavy, and this class exists precisely for the adults it leaves out. The pacing, playlist and room culture are all built grown-up.

Do I need to be fit or cool? +

Neither is checked. The grooves scale to any fitness level and build it as they go, and the class's only style requirement is that you're willing to look moderately silly on the way to looking good.

What should I wear? +

Trainers with decent cushioning and clothes you'd wear to any casual workout. Hip-hop dress codes are self-inflicted only.

Will we learn breaking? +

This class covers standing styles — grooves, foundations and choreography. Breaking is its own discipline with its own training demands, though the foundations here are the right runway if you're heading that way.

What music do you play? +

Classic funk and boom-bap through to current hip-hop and R&B — the playlist spans the culture's whole timeline, because the moves do too.

Is there really a freestyle circle? +

Yes, and it's genuinely optional every single week — nobody is volunteered. Most people watch for a month, try sixteen counts once, and are annoyed to discover they love it.

When do the Cambridge classes start? +

The timetable is opening now — register interest via the contact page or on 07759 656300 and you'll hear the confirmed day, time and studio for hip-hop as soon as it's set.
