Beginners Class — 60 Minutes
Groove & Bounce
Loosening into the two-step, bounce and rock that every hip-hop move sits on top of — the warm-up doubles as your first lesson of the night.
Party Dance Vocabulary
A rotating dig into the named social dances — running man, the smurf, the dougie — the moves that built the culture at house parties before any camera showed up.
Choreography Build
Stacking that vocabulary into an eight-count phrase set to hip-hop and trap, the choreography side that fills tours and video shoots.
Musicality & Texture
Same steps, different weight — hitting hard on one track, riding lazy on the next — so you dance the song rather than a count.
Freestyle Circle & Cool-Down
An optional cypher to spend what you have picked up, never compulsory and always cheered, then a proper stretch-out.
About Hip-Hop Classes in Northampton
Hip-hop is the groove first: the bounce a drum break drags out of you, the named party dances that spread from house parties to the charts, and the choreography that tours behind the biggest acts. Street dance stacks a shelf of styles and rotates them a slot at a time; our hip-hop class hands that root shelf an uninterrupted hour to breathe.
Northampton already dances this. Dexterity Dance runs street and hip-hop teams out at Great Houghton, Mayhew School folds it into acrobatics, and Streets Ahead keeps the town's crews visible online. What is missing is one adult class that treats hip-hop as its own subject rather than a passing slot, so that is the room we run — weekly and open to the public.
Nearly everyone arrives unable to hold a count, which is the honest place we build from. A drop-in is £8, paid on the night, at partner studios a short step from Market Square and the North Gate bus station where the Stagecoach routes meet. In the town that shod the world, footwork feels like a fair birthright, and under-eighteens train in their own age-banded groups.

Why Choose Hip-Hop in Northampton?
Rooted, Not Rebranded
We teach hip-hop as its own tradition — grooves and party dances first — not as one rotating slot inside a street-dance umbrella.
Into a Real Local Scene
Dexterity, Mayhew and Streets Ahead already dance here; our class plugs you into a town that moves, not one invented for a flyer.
Kids & Teens Banded
Under-eighteens train in age-checked groups with DBS-checked coaches, from primary age right up through the teens.
Footwork in Shoe Town
Northampton built its name on footwear; we build yours on footwork, one clean count at a time.
Your Hip-Hop Journey
From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.
Find the Bounce
Getting Going
Grooves, weight changes and your first two or three party dances. The aim is rhythm and nerve, not polish.
What to Wear
Joggers or trackies, a loose top and flat cushioned trainers. Bring water and leave the ego at the door.
Stack the Counts
Choreography
Longer phrases, cleaner transitions, and picking a routine up faster than you thought you could.
Musicality
Reading the track — where to hit, where to float — so two dancers on the same steps look completely different.
Your Own Flavour
Freestyle
Short guided improvisations grow the courage to move without a plan, the skill hip-hop values most.
The Circle
Comfortable stepping into the cypher and cheering the next person out of it.
Part of the Culture
Depth
Sharper foundations, harder choreography, and a point of view on the floor that reads as yours.
Next Steps
Jams, workshops and battles across the East Midlands when you want them — we point the way.
Hip-Hop in Northampton FAQ
Everything you need to know before your first class.
How is your hip-hop class different from a street dance class in Northampton? +
Street dance is the umbrella term — locking, popping, breaking and house rotated a slot at a time. Our hip-hop class stays on hip-hop: its grooves, its party dances and the choreography grown from them, for a full hour. Plenty of dancers happily do both.
I have never danced before — is that a problem? +
It is the norm here, not the exception. The groove is something everyone can find, and every session opens there before anything gets stacked on top. Most of the starter room is in exactly your position.
Where in Northampton do the hip-hop classes run? +
From partner studios close to the town centre, a short walk from Market Square and the North Gate bus station, with age-grouped kids' sessions nearby. The exact venue is confirmed once you book.
How much does a hip-hop class in Northampton cost? +
Eight pounds a drop-in, handed over on the night — no joining fee, no contract, no app. Discounted blocks follow once your nearest session settles into a regular slot.
What should I wear to my first session? +
Clothes you can sweat and move in, and flat trainers with a bit of cushioning. Hip-hop rates personal style, so past that, dress like yourself.
Is there really a hip-hop scene in Northampton? +
Yes — Dexterity out at Great Houghton, Mayhew's street-and-acrobatics teams and Streets Ahead all keep it alive. Ours is the town-centre adult class that ties those threads into one weekly room.
Will you make me freestyle in front of everyone? +
Never forced. The closing circle is optional, cheered rather than judged, and most people talk their own way into it by the second month rather than being pushed.
Do you teach real foundations or just copy routines off a screen? +
Foundations first — the grooves and party dances the choreography is built from — so you understand why a move works, not only where your feet land.
Do you run classes for children and teenagers? +
Yes, in age-banded groups with DBS-checked coaches, from primary age up. It is one of the most-requested kids' classes we offer. Pick the age bracket on the form.
