Beginners Class — 60 Minutes
Warm Into the Bounce
We open on the head-nod and knee-dip that sits under everything in hip-hop, kept slow and unfussed. It is also the quickest way to shake the opening-night stiffness out of a floor of people still learning each other's names.
One Party Dance, Done Right
Each session you pick up a single named social dance and the story behind it — where it came from, who set it going — so you leave with the real move rather than a smudged copy off a phone screen.
Build a Short Routine
The night's moves get stitched onto a short piece of choreography over a hip-hop or chart track, and then we go hunting for the accents and pauses that turn marking-it-through into properly dancing it.
Talk Back to the Track
Low-key improv games where the only task is to listen and reply — no spotlight, no scoring, just space to test an idea and start trusting the timing you already have in you.
Full Speed, Then Ease Down
A final run at full tempo to lodge the routine properly, then a wind-down that looks after the calves and ankles an hour of bouncing has quietly been relying on all along.
About Hip-Hop Classes in Nottingham
Hip-hop earns a full hour of its own, not a cameo squeezed into a quick tour of the street-dance family. Our hip-hop dance classes in Nottingham hand the style the space it needs: the grooves that drive it, the social dances that carry actual names, and routines set to hip-hop and chart cuts — coached as a craft that stands alone rather than a taster wedged between other styles.
Nottingham has always known how to get behind a beat. This is Rock City's home town — the Talbot Street venue that has hosted a wall of touring names since 1980 — and a city that has since fired Jake Bugg, Sleaford Mods and Young T & Bugsey into the charts. Throw in the vast student crowd around the University of Nottingham and Nottingham Trent and the floor stays busy, mixed and dead easy to melt into.
Walking in unable to link two moves is completely normal — most of the room began right there. We take the groove apart until it runs by itself, then stack from it. Our floors sit around the city centre and Old Market Square, over in Hockley and the Lace Market, or out towards Beeston; you will hear which is yours once your place is booked. A single class is £8 with nothing to sign, and under-18s train in their own supervised age groups.

Why Choose Hip-Hop in Nottingham?
The Whole Hour on One Thing
Rather than dashing through locking, popping and breaking and doing none of them justice, the class stays put inside hip-hop — the single branch, worked slowly enough that it actually sticks with you.
A City With a Beat
From Rock City's stage to the likes of Jake Bugg and Sleaford Mods, Nottingham has a habit of putting the music first — and that appetite for a track comes through the door with every dancer who arrives.
Under-18s Have Their Own
Younger dancers work in age-banded groups with DBS-checked teachers, and hip-hop is one of the most requested classes on that half of the city's timetable, term after term.
Starting From Nothing Is Normal
Rocking up with zero steps is simply how most people begin — the dancer next to you almost certainly did exactly the same a term or two back, and nobody remembers otherwise.
Your Hip-Hop Journey
From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.
Catching the Groove
Where You Begin
You spend these weeks on bounce, rock and a first social dance, chasing an easy feel over the beat before anything else. Precision can wait — it largely falls into place once the groove has arrived.
Kit for Now
Trackies or joggers, a shirt you don't mind sweating through, and flat, cushioned trainers. Past basic comfort, your own look is genuinely welcome once you have settled in.
Stacking Moves
Growing the Bank
A fresh party dance most weeks, plus choreography that keeps tightening — accents and stops layered in until your runs start locking to the record playing beneath them.
First Freestyle
The improv games inch forward: short solos, call-and-response, standing by your own choices while the track keeps carrying on around you.
Sounding Like You
Your Own Accent
Longer pieces and freestyles where you begin bending counts and leaving your own fingerprint, instead of tracing whoever happens to be dancing up front.
Part of the Room
Comfortable stepping into the circle and known by name — Nottingham's hip-hop floor is a crowd you join, not a box you tick off.
Holding Your Own
Digging Deeper
Tougher choreography, sharper musicality and freestyle steady enough to lean on when a track lobs a curveball at you halfway through a phrase.
What Comes Next
Showcases, our own events, or the city's jams and battles — a student-fuelled scene that always has something on to watch or enter.
Hip-Hop in Nottingham FAQ
Everything you need to know before your first class.
How is this different from your street dance class? +
Street dance is the full family tree — across a term you cycle through locking, popping, breaking and house. Hip-hop is one branch of it, and this class stays on that branch alone: the grooves, the party dances that have actual names, and routines set to hip-hop and chart tracks. Plenty of people take both classes.
Where in Nottingham do the hip-hop classes run? +
Partner studios around the city centre and Old Market Square, over in Hockley and the Lace Market, and out towards Beeston, with the younger groups reaching a little wider. Your exact room is confirmed at booking, and most sit a short walk from the station or a NET tram stop.
I honestly can't dance — will I cope? +
You'll manage. Everything is built up from that basic bounce, one layer at a time, and total newcomers make up most of the beginner class — you would be firmly in the majority, not the odd one out on the floor.
What should I wear? +
Anything you can move and sweat in, on flat, well-cushioned trainers. Self-expression has always been part of hip-hop, so once you are comfortable, your own look is genuinely encouraged rather than frowned on.
Is a class more set choreography or freestyle? +
A mix of the two, always. A typical night gives you one or two party dances and a run of choreography, followed by some steered improv — short drills, no spotlight on anyone. Give it a few weeks and most people are itching to get in the circle.
What does a drop-in cost, and am I tied in? +
A drop-in is £8, handed over on the night, with nothing tying you down. As soon as your nearest studio pins a weekly time to the diary, discounted runs of weeks appear beside the pay-as-you-go price.
Are there classes for kids and teenagers? +
Yes — under-18s have their own age-banded sessions with DBS-checked staff, and hip-hop is one of the busiest on that timetable. Note your age when you enquire and we will place you in the right group.
Is there a hip-hop scene in Nottingham to move into? +
There is. Two big universities keep a young, hungry crowd in town, and the city's music runs from Rock City to the charts, so battles, jams and showcases crop up through the year. When you are ready, your teacher will point you at the right one to watch or enter.
Could you run a hip-hop session out of the centre? +
Of course — the class is mobile too. Workshops, birthday sessions and youth-group classes head out across Nottingham and the wider county, from West Bridgford and Arnold to Mansfield and Newark. Just tell us your area on the form and we will handle the rest.
