Feel It Before You Name It
A whole track plays while we do nothing but let the rhythm drop through the body — knees soft, ribs loose, shoulders easy — so movement comes off the music and not off a mental count.
Ground the Rock
That low, springy weight-shift sitting under every hip-hop move gets its own slot, worked slowly and close to the floor until it powers itself off the beat.
A Named Step, Traced
One club step at a time: we name it, credit where it started, and take it apart slowly so it arrives clean and keeps its history instead of turning into a vague copy.
Thread the Phrase
The rock and the fresh step get woven into a short loop, and once it cycles round without a hitch the counting falls away and it simply becomes a dance.
Circle and Ease Out
A relaxed ring gives anyone who wants it a turn in the middle, then we stretch down warm and end on a high note.
About Hip-Hop Classes in Swansea
There is a real street and hip-hop scene in Swansea, and it would be daft to pretend otherwise: MODE — Makers of Dance Energy — teaches street and hip-hop out of Sketty and has earned genuine standing across the city and South West Wales. They are the people to see for a full pathway. What our hip-hop dance classes in Swansea offer is narrower and quieter — a single, unhurried lane for adult beginners, run beside the specialists rather than over them, with a nudge in their direction whenever that suits you better.
It helps to be clear about the word, because hip-hop shoulders three different jobs. There is breaking — the floorwork of toprock, drops and freezes that really needs its own dedicated room. There is commercial — the crisp, lens-ready finish behind music videos and tour sets. And there is the social, party-dance heart, which is where we live: a low, elastic bounce and the named club steps that grew on block-party floors, with choreography added only after that groove has genuinely bedded into your legs.
Uplands has long carried Swansea's most independent, music-leaning nights out — the corner of Abertawe that raised the likes of Cerys Matthews and Catatonia — and this style feels at home in that spirit. We work from confirmed studio space around Castle Square and the city centre and on the Uplands and Brynmill side, and we drive the class out to Sketty, Killay, Morriston, the Mumbles and across Gower for groups. Book a place in a class or bring us to a hall near you.

Why Choose Hip-Hop in Swansea?
A Full Hour of Social Hip-Hop
Breaking and commercial each want a room of their own, so we hand the whole sixty minutes to the social party-dance core — which is exactly how the bounce works its way into the body.
Straight About Swansea's Scene
MODE in Sketty are the genuine street and hip-hop specialists in this city, and we never pretend otherwise — our adult hour runs alongside theirs, unaffiliated, and we happily send you on when a full pathway is the aim.
Roots Before Routines
Each club step is credited to where it was born, so you walk out understanding the party-dance story behind the move instead of mirroring a clip off a phone.
We Come Across Gower
City-centre and Uplands rooms plus a proper come-to-you service mean Sketty, Morriston, the Mumbles and the Gower villages all get the identical class in a hall nearby.
Your Hip-Hop Journey
From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.
Getting the Groove Under You
What settles
That grounded rock stops needing your attention and simply ticks over on its own, lining your weight, knees and timing up with the track without you driving it.
Where we go next
A couple of the friendliest club steps, each traced to its source and taught slowly enough to stay in the body rather than flash past.
Linking It Together
What settles
You slide between two or three steps while the rock keeps ticking beneath, so the transitions read as dance rather than dropped beats.
Where we go next
Gentle drops in level and a touch of head-and-shoulder swagger, so the groove starts to carry your stamp.
Carrying a Whole Song
What settles
A full track is yours to hold, rising and easing with it rather than running out of ideas after a handful of eights.
Where we go next
Little freestyle pockets inside the phrase where the next move is your shout — reliably where confidence shows up.
Sounding Like Yourself
What settles
Familiar steps start wearing your accent, your timing and lean quietly becoming a signature you never planned.
Where we go next
Turns taken into the middle of the circle and easy, low-stakes spells under watching eyes, so performing loses its sting.
Hip-Hop in Swansea FAQ
Everything you need to know before your first class.
Where in Swansea do your hip-hop classes run? +
Adult sessions are confirmed around Castle Square and the city-centre studios, with a spot on the Uplands and Brynmill side, and you will hear the exact room once your place is held. For groups we also head out to Sketty, Killay, Morriston, the Mumbles and the Gower villages.
How much is a class? +
One session costs £8 flat, handed over on the day — there is no joining fee, no term to buy and nothing rolling away in the background. Prefer a private group or a session at your own venue? Say the word and we will price it plainly.
How is this different from a street-dance class? +
Honestly they overlap so much that the labels get used loosely. Where we draw the line is finish: our street-dance hour pushes toward the crisp, choreographed, commercial end, while this hip-hop hour stays in the loose, social, groove-led heart — club steps and bounce first, set routines a distant second.
Isn't hip-hop already covered by MODE? +
Gladly, yes. MODE — Makers of Dance Energy — is Sketty's established street and hip-hop base and the right call for a serious pathway. Ours is a smaller, separate, unaffiliated beginners' hour that sits alongside theirs, and we will happily send you on to them.
I honestly can't find the beat — will I cope? +
Honestly, you will manage fine. We spend the opening minutes doing nothing but letting the pulse drop into your body, long before a step gets a label, and the bounce is taught alone and slow. The people surest they have two left feet are usually the ones grinning through the phrase at the end.
What should I wear? +
Something loose enough to sink low in, plus trainers with a smooth sole so you can spin without catching — skip denim and anything sticky underfoot. A bottle of water and you are set; save the spotless box-fresh kicks for once you have found your feet.
Do you teach real foundations or screen-copied routines? +
We start from the ground up every time. The bounce is built first and each club step is traced back to where it was born, so you finish knowing the culture rather than aping a clip. Choreography only gets stacked on once that groove is truly living in your legs.
Can you bring hip-hop to a school, society or youth group? +
Absolutely — travelling to a group is among our most common bookings. Give us a school hall, a university society room or a community space anywhere across Swansea, the Mumbles or Gower and we will tailor the hour to the ages and level in front of us.
Do you run sessions for children and teenagers? +
The regular drop-in is written for adults, though come-to-you workshops can be geared to younger groups on request. For ongoing children's street and hip-hop in Swansea, MODE over in Sketty runs junior classes and is the outfit to ring.
