Class Structure

Beginners Class — 60 Minutes

0–10 mins

Ride the Groove

We open loose and low, hunting the bounce that lives under every hip-hop record — a rock through the knees and chest that has you moving before a single count gets handed out.

10–25 mins

Party Dance of the Week

Each session unpicks one named social dance and rebuilds it properly, so you leave knowing the mechanics of a move rather than a rough impression copied off a screen.

25–40 mins

Stack the Choreography

Those pieces get layered onto a track into a short routine you can actually run top to tail — the part most people come for and the part that sticks.

40–50 mins

Freestyle Corner

Low-pressure improv games teach you to hear a beat and answer it, growing the nerve to move without a set plan waiting in your head.

50–60 mins

Cypher, If You Fancy It

An open circle nobody is forced into, then a full stretch-down to close the hour and send you home loose.

About Hip-Hop Classes in Norwich

People use hip-hop and street dance as if they were the same word, but the classes pull in different directions. Our street sessions rotate through popping, breaking, locking and house; this hip-hop hour stays put on the groove itself — the bounce, the classic party dances and the choreography built around the tracks. Narrowing the focus is the point: it lets the movement bed in properly.

Norwich already has real hip-hop going on. The Garage on Chapel Field North runs a broad programme, Dynamic Dance teaches the style out at Spixworth and Sprowston, and independent teachers like Georgia's Hip Hop & Heels keep the city ticking. Our adult beginner hour sits alongside them, based in a central studio near the Lanes with a second space station-side by Riverside.

Turning up with no rhythm and no routines behind you is exactly what a beginner class is for — most of the room is in the same boat. It costs £8 on the door, with nothing to join and nothing to sign. Norwich runs on buses rather than any tram or metro, so leave a little slack in the evenings, and under-eighteens dance in their own staffed groups.

Why Choose Hip-Hop in Norwich?

Groove Over Everything

We spend the whole hour inside hip-hop — its bounce, its party dances, its choreography — instead of skimming every street style, which is why the learning holds.

A Real Local Scene

The Garage, Dynamic Dance and teachers like Georgia's keep hip-hop alive in and around Norwich, so there is somewhere to take it once class has you hooked.

Not the Same as Heels

Hip-hop here is flat-shoe, grounded and groove-led — separate from our heels class, though plenty of dancers happily do both.

Kids & Teens Catered For

Under-eighteens train in their own age-banded, staffed sessions with vetted teachers, kept apart from the adult beginner hour.

Your Hip-Hop Journey

From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.

Week 1–4

Find the Bounce

Where You Start

Grooves, a rock or two and your first party dance. We chase feel and timing long before anything needs to look sharp.

What to Bring

Comfortable clothes and flat trainers with a little cushion. Water in the bag, and zero worry about how you look.

Month 2–3

Build a Vocabulary

More Moves

Extra party dances and grooves, plus the counting that lets you chain them into runs longer than a single step.

First Freestyle

Gentle improv drills nudge you into moving unscripted — the skill hip-hop is really built on.

Month 4–6

Lock Onto the Beat

Reading the Song

Catching the accents in a track and landing your moves on them, so the dancing looks deliberate rather than approximate.

Longer Routines

Choreography that gathers several weeks together into one piece you can run clean from start to finish.

Month 6+

Your Own Flavour

A Recognisable Style

You start bending the steps toward something that reads as yours instead of a copy of the person in front.

Where Next

Norwich and regional jams, guest workshops, or a move into our street and commercial sessions.

Hip-Hop in Norwich FAQ

Everything you need to know before your first class.

How is a hip-hop class different from your street dance class in Norwich? +

Think of street dance as the broad umbrella that rotates popping, breaking, locking and house week to week. Hip-hop narrows in on one part of that — the bounce, the named party dances and the choreography — and holds it for a full session. Doing both alongside each other is common.

I've truly never danced — will I keep up? +

Not a problem at all. We kick off from the most basic bounce going and build slowly, and most of the class turned up as complete newcomers too, so a first-timer never stands out.

Whereabouts in Norwich are the hip-hop classes? +

At partner studios in the centre near the Lanes and Chapel Field, with a second base station-side around Riverside. Buses reach both easily, and we send the exact address once your place is booked.

What does a hip-hop class in Norwich cost? +

Eight pounds a session, paid on the day. No joining fee, no block bought up front, no contract — you come on the weeks that suit your diary and skip the ones that don't.

Is this the same as your heels class? +

No. Hip-hop here is flat, grounded and led by the groove; heels is its own class built around a raised shoe and a different attack. They complement each other, and dancers often move between the two.

Do you actually teach foundations or just copy videos? +

Foundations come first every time. We break each party dance and groove into its working parts, name them and put them back together, then use that to build the choreography — so the moves make sense in your body.

What should I wear to the first class? +

Whatever you can move freely in — a tee and joggers do the job — plus flat trainers with a bit of give underfoot. Personal style is part of hip-hop, so once the basics are covered, turn up looking however you like.

Is there a hip-hop scene near Norwich I can join? +

There is. The Garage, Dynamic Dance out in Spixworth and Sprowston, and independent teachers keep the local scene busy, and jams and workshops pop up around the city and wider Norfolk. Your teacher will point you at the next one.

Do you run classes for children and teenagers? +

We do. Under-eighteens train in their own staffed, age-banded groups with vetted teachers, run separately from the adult hour. Pick the right age band on the enquiry form and we'll place them.
