Class Structure
Beginners Class — 60 Minutes
Wake the Room Up
We open on the head-nod and shoulder bounce that sits under everything else, kept loose and unhurried. It doubles as the fastest way to shake the first-night stiffness out of a floor full of people who have not met yet.
One Party Dance, Properly
Each session hands you a single social dance and where it came from, so you leave with the actual move and its backstory rather than a smudged version half-copied off a phone screen.
Build the Choreography
The night's steps get stitched into a short routine over a hip-hop or chart cut, and then we chase the hits, pauses and accents that separate marking it through from genuinely dancing it.
Talk Back to the Beat
Low-key improv games where the only job is to hear the track and reply to it — no spotlight, no pressure, just space to test ideas and start trusting your own timing.
Full Speed, Then Stretch
One last run at full tempo so the routine sticks, then a wind-down that looks after the ankles and calves an hour of bouncing has quietly been leaning on.
About Hip-Hop Classes in Belfast
Hip-hop deserves a full hour, not a walk-on part inside a quick lap of the street family. Our hip-hop dance classes in Belfast give the style room to breathe — the grooves, the named social dances, the choreography built on hip-hop and chart records — taught as a craft in its own right rather than one stop on a sampler.
Belfast keeps its music young and close to the ground. It is a UNESCO City of Music, home to the Oh Yeah Music Centre in the Cathedral Quarter and a lineage that runs from Van Morrison to Snow Patrol, and the big student crowd around Queen's and the Botanic end keeps a class full, mixed and easy to melt into.
Walking in unable to string two moves together is completely normal — most of the room started exactly there. We take the groove apart until it feels automatic, then stack from it. Our floors sit in the city centre, over in the Cathedral Quarter and down towards Botanic; you will hear which is yours once your place is held. One class is £8 with nothing to sign, and under-18s train in their own supervised groups.

Why Choose Hip-Hop in Belfast?
One Style, Real Depth
The whole hour stays inside hip-hop instead of racing through locking, popping and breaking and shortchanging all three — you get the branch itself, worked slowly enough to actually own it.
A UNESCO City of Music
Belfast's music runs deep — Van Morrison, Snow Patrol, a City of Music title and the Oh Yeah Centre round the corner — and that appetite for a beat spills straight onto the class floor.
Classes for Under-18s
Younger dancers work in their own age brackets with DBS-checked teachers, and hip-hop is one of the most asked-for sessions on that side of the timetable.
Total Beginners Are the Norm
Turning up with no steps at all is the standard way in, not the exception — the person next to you almost certainly walked through the door the same way.
Your Hip-Hop Journey
From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.
The Feel
Where You Begin
Bounce, rock and a first social dance, hunting timing and ease over the beat. Crispness is a later job and mostly sorts itself once the feel arrives.
What to Wear
Joggers or trackies, a top you can sweat in and flat trainers with a bit of cushion. Once you have settled, wear whatever looks like you.
The Vocabulary
Stacking Moves
A fresh party dance most weeks and choreography that tidies up, with accents and stops layered in until your runs start matching the records under them.
First Freestyle
The improv games edge on — short solos, call-and-response, backing your own choices while the track rolls on around you.
Your Own Flavour
Sounding Like You
Longer pieces and freestyles where you start bending counts and leaving a mark of your own instead of copying whoever is up front.
Part of the Room
Comfortable stepping into the circle and known by name — Belfast's hip-hop floor is a scene you join, not a box you tick.
Holding Your Own
Going Deeper
Heavier choreography, sharper musicality and freestyle steady enough to lean on when a record throws a curveball mid-phrase.
What Comes Next
Showcases, our own events, or Belfast's own battles and jams — the city's competitive street scene has real pedigree to aim at.
Hip-Hop in Belfast FAQ
Everything you need to know before your first class.
What's the difference between this and your street dance class? +
Street dance is the big umbrella — locking, popping, breaking, house, all cycled through. Hip-hop is one strand of it, and this class digs into that strand alone: the grooves, the named party dances and choreography set to hip-hop and chart records. Loads of dancers do both.
I honestly can't dance — will I cope? +
You'll be fine. Every block starts from the basic bounce and grows one piece at a time, and in the beginner classes people with no experience are the clear majority — you would be the normal case, not the exception.
What should I wear to a class? +
Whatever lets you move and sweat, with flat, cushioned trainers on your feet. Beyond that, this style has always prized how you carry yourself — so wear whatever feels most like you.
Which parts of Belfast are the classes in? +
Partner studios in the city centre near Donegall Square, over in the Cathedral Quarter and down towards Botanic, with younger groups spreading a little wider. Your exact venue lands when you book, and each is a short walk or Glider hop from Grand Central.
Is it more set routines or freestyle? +
A bit of both, always. Each week you gather a party dance or two and a run of choreography, then try some steered freestyle — quick exercises, never a spotlight. Within a few weeks most people are keen to jump into the circle.
How much is a drop-in, and am I tied in? +
Each session is £8, settled up when you arrive, with no contract holding you. As soon as your local studio locks in a regular weekly time, discounted blocks of weeks appear beside the pay-as-you-go option.
Are there sessions for kids and teenagers? +
Yes — there are separate age-grouped sessions for under-18s led by DBS-checked staff, and hip-hop is one of the most popular on that side of the schedule. Put your age on the form and we will match you to the right class.
Is there a hip-hop scene in Belfast to get into? +
There is, and a competitive one — Northern Ireland has produced All-Ireland street champions, and Belfast runs battles, jams and showcases through the year. When you are ready, your teacher will point you at the right event to watch or step into.
Could you run hip-hop somewhere outside the centre? +
Definitely — the class travels too. We take workshops, birthday sessions and youth-group classes out through greater Belfast and on to Lisburn, Bangor and Newtownabbey; just flag where you are on the form.
