Class Structure

Beginners Class — 60 Minutes

0:00 – 0:10

Nod Before Numbers

We start the body moving to the actual song, letting the head-nod and weight-shift settle in until the room feels loose. No counting yet — the aim is to feel the record before you try to dance to it, so everything after has somewhere honest to sit.

0:10 – 0:25

A Foundation, Learned Properly

Each week centres on one foundational step and where it genuinely comes from, drilled until it feels like yours rather than a shape copied off a screen. This is the vocabulary that separates hip-hop from a set of borrowed choreography moves.

0:25 – 0:40

Playing With the Music

We work on how you sit on the beat — driving right on top of it, then hanging lazily behind it — because in hip-hop the timing you choose says as much as the move itself. Same steps, read two different ways.

0:40 – 0:50

Build a Short Set

The week's material gets threaded into a compact routine over a hip-hop or chart track, taught slowly and repeated until your body runs it without a running commentary in your head.

0:50 – 1:00

Round and Release

A relaxed freestyle round for anyone who fancies throwing something down, entirely optional, then a full stretch so you leave warm, loose and with the hour banked in the body.

About Hip-Hop Classes in Plymouth

Hip-hop is a culture long before it is a class — it arrived with its own music, its own social dances and the freestyle that lets a dancer answer a track live. Street dance is the umbrella term studios hang over a rotation of styles; hip-hop is the ground the whole thing grew out of, and here it gets an undivided hour rather than a single slot.

Plymouth has genuine roots to draw on. Rhythm City CIC works out of the Oxford House Creative Hub on Manor Street in Stonehouse, teaching foundations, breaking and popping all the way up to a Level 3 diploma; The Groovement Project keeps a loud local following, and Dance Factory carries the broader adult end near Buckwell Street. You step onto a floor a real scene already keeps busy.

Almost everyone begins unable to link two moves together, which is exactly the point to start from — the feel comes first and the polish stacks on later. A drop-in is £8 with nothing to sign, our central sessions sit around Drake Circus and the Stonehouse side, and younger dancers train in supervised age groups with vetted staff.

Why Choose Hip-Hop in Plymouth?

One Hour, All Hip-Hop

The form is handed a class to itself — its social dances, its groove and its freestyle — with nothing swapped out for a single borrowed move from a wider street rotation.

A City With a Real Pathway

Rhythm City's foundations-to-diploma route out of Stonehouse means Plymouth treats hip-hop as a craft to progress in, not a novelty, and we point you toward that scene as you grow.

Timing You Can Hear

We spend real time on musicality — where you land against the beat and how it changes the same move — because that is what makes hip-hop read as hip-hop rather than counted steps.

Room for Every Age

Adults from seventeen upward share the main floor, while under-18s dance in their own age-banded groups, each led by a DBS-checked teacher who keeps the energy up and the room safe.

Your Hip-Hop Journey

From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.

01

Finding the Feel

Where You Begin

The head-nod, the weight-shift and one beginner-friendly foundation — chasing rhythm and confidence long before any finished routine turns up.

What to Bring

Clothes you can sweat freely in and flat trainers with a bit of give. That is genuinely the entire kit list for week one.

02

Stacking Vocabulary

Named Foundations

A fresh foundational step most weeks, each one filed away with the story of where it started, so the move lodges in the memory.

Your First Routine

Short sets to hip-hop and chart records, drilled at half speed until they run clean without you mouthing the counts under your breath.

03

Making It Talk

Riding the Beat

Pushing ahead of the track and dragging behind it, so one run reads sharp and the next reads easy off the identical counts.

Into the Round

Small structured improvisation games wear the nerves down until stepping into a freestyle circle stops feeling like a dare.

04

Your Own Voice

Meatier Material

Longer, sharper routines that pull together everything you have banked into something genuinely worth showing a room.

Out Into Plymouth

Jams, battles and open floors when you fancy them — from the Stonehouse scene outward — with your teacher steering you to the right ones.

Hip-Hop in Plymouth FAQ

Everything you need to know before your first class.

How is your hip-hop class different from a street dance class in Plymouth? +

Street dance is the wide label studios use for a rotation of many styles. Hip-hop sits on tighter ground — the culture it came from, its social dances, its musicality and its freestyle. A lot of dancers do both, and there is a separate Plymouth street dance class if that broader mix is what you are after.

Whereabouts in Plymouth are the hip-hop classes held? +

At partner studios around Drake Circus and the city centre, with more sessions toward the Stonehouse side where the local scene is strongest. Your exact room is confirmed once you book, and it is a short walk or Citybus hop from Plymouth station.

I have honestly never danced — will I keep up? +

You will. The majority of the room arrives unable to chain two moves together, and that is precisely where we build from. Every session opens on the feel — a simple movement anyone can find — so on this floor a total beginner is the norm, not the odd one out.

Is there a genuine Plymouth angle to what you teach? +

A strong one. Rhythm City CIC runs authentic foundations, breaking and popping out of the Oxford House hub in Stonehouse, right up to a Level 3 diploma, and The Groovement Project keeps the community end busy. Our class sits inside that living scene rather than importing one from elsewhere.

What does a hip-hop class in Plymouth cost? +

A drop-in is £8, paid one session at a time, with no joining fee and no contract. Once your local studio settles onto a regular weekly slot, discounted blocks open up for anyone who wants to commit to a run of classes.

What should I wear to my first class? +

Something you can move and sweat in, plus flat trainers with a little cushioning. Hip-hop has always run on personal style, so past those basics wear whatever feels like you — there is no uniform and nothing to buy in advance.

Do you actually teach the foundations, or just routines? +

The foundations come first, every week. We give a named step real time and its real backstory, then use it inside the choreography — so the routine lands on a base you understand, rather than a sequence you have simply memorised in order.

Do you run classes for children and teenagers as well as adults? +

Both. Adults from seventeen to well past seventy share the main floor, and under-18s dance in their own age-banded, supervised groups, each one led by a DBS-checked teacher who keeps the room safe throughout.

Will I be forced to freestyle in front of everybody? +

Never on command. The closing round is always optional, though most people have quietly talked themselves into it within a month or two. Gentle structured drills build the confidence well before a solo is ever on the table.
