Class Structure
Beginners Class — 60 Minutes
Find the Downbeat
A full track plays before any step gets a name, and we spend it letting the pulse drop into knees, ribs and shoulders so the body is loose and honest with the beat first.
Set the Bounce
The grounded rock that everything else rides on gets drilled slowly on its own, weight low and easy, until it drives off the music rather than off you counting.
One Social Step, Credited
We take a single named party step, say where it came from, and break it down piece by piece so it lands cleanly instead of blurring past as a copied shape.
Chain It Together
The bounce and the new step get stitched into a short phrase you can loop, so the groove starts to feel like dancing rather than a checklist of moves.
Circle Up and Cool Down
A relaxed, low-pressure circle lets anyone who fancies it try the phrase in the middle, then we stretch out warm and finish on a high.
About Hip-Hop Classes in Oxford
Oxford already has hip-hop worth naming, so we name it: Body Politic is a professional hip-hop dance-theatre company based out of the Pegasus Theatre on Magdalen Road in East Oxford, teaching the style from around age five, and the Old Fire Station on George Street lists freestyle hip-hop on its central weekly timetable. Those are the specialists. Our hip-hop dance classes in Oxford add one calm adult lane beside them instead of pretending to run the whole floor — we point you their way with respect and stay a separate, unaffiliated session for grown-up beginners.
It helps to be plain about what the word actually covers, because hip-hop gets asked to do three different jobs. Breaking is the floor craft — toprock, drops and freezes that really need a class built around them. Commercial is the sharp, camera-facing finish behind chart routines and tours. What we teach lives in the party-dance middle: the low, springy bounce and the named social steps that came off block-party and club floors, with short runs layered on only once that groove is genuinely sitting in your legs.
The East Oxford stretch along Cowley Road has long carried the city's most mixed music and nightlife, and it is where this style feels most at home. We work from confirmed studio space near George Street and Gloucester Green in the centre and on the Cowley Road side of town, and we travel out to Headington, Jericho, Summertown, Iffley and the wider Oxfordshire villages for groups. Book a spot in a class or bring us to a hall near you.

Why Choose Hip-Hop in Oxford?
A Whole Hour of Social Hip-Hop
Breaking and commercial each deserve their own room, so we give the full sixty minutes to the social party-dance core — that is how the bounce actually beds into your body.
Honest About Oxford's Scene
Body Politic and the Old Fire Station are the real specialists here and we say so openly, sending you their way and keeping our own adult drop-in clearly separate and unaffiliated.
Culture Before Choreography
Every named step is credited to where it came from, so you leave understanding the party-dance roots of the move, not just miming a routine off a screen.
We Come Across Oxfordshire
Centre and East Oxford studio space plus a genuine come-to-you service means Headington, Cowley, Jericho and the county villages all get the same class in a hall near them.
Your Hip-Hop Journey
From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.
Trusting the Bounce
What clicks
The low grounded rock stops feeling like an instruction and starts running by itself, so your weight, knees and timing finally agree with the track.
What we add
A couple of the friendliest named social steps, each one credited and drilled slowly enough that it sticks rather than flashes past.
Collecting Steps
What clicks
Switching cleanly between two or three steps without dropping the bounce underneath — the join becomes part of the dance instead of a stumble.
What we add
Simple level changes and a little attitude in the upper body, so the groove reads as yours and not a stiff copy.
Riding a Full Track
What clicks
You can hold a whole song, matching the energy as it rises and eases rather than running out of ideas after eight counts.
What we add
Short freestyle windows inside the phrase where you choose the step, which is where confidence really turns up.
Finding Your Own Flavour
What clicks
The same steps start to look different on you, because your timing and accent have quietly become a personal signature.
What we add
Cypher-style turns and calm, low-stakes moments in the middle, so performing in front of the room stops feeling like a leap.
Hip-Hop in Oxford FAQ
Everything you need to know before your first class.
Where in Oxford do your hip-hop classes run? +
Our confirmed adult sessions are based near George Street and Gloucester Green in the centre, with a Cowley Road / East Oxford option, and the exact studio is confirmed when you book. We also travel to Headington, Cowley, Jericho, Summertown, Iffley and the wider Oxfordshire villages for group and private bookings.
How much is a class? +
Every weekly drop-in is a flat £8 per session, paid as you go, with no membership and no block you have to commit to. Come when it suits you; if you want a private group or a come-to-you session, just ask and we will quote clearly.
How is this different from a street-dance class? +
The two overlap heavily and plenty of teachers use the words interchangeably. In our timetable, street dance leans towards the sharper, more choreographed and commercial finish, while this hip-hop hour stays in the social, groove-first party-dance heart — the bounce and the named club steps first, routines only on top of that.
Isn't hip-hop already covered by Body Politic and the Old Fire Station? +
Yes, and we say so gladly. Body Politic is a professional hip-hop dance-theatre company at the Pegasus Theatre in East Oxford, and the Old Fire Station lists freestyle hip-hop centrally. They are the specialists; we run an unaffiliated adult beginners' lane beside them and are happy to point you to either.
I honestly can't find the beat — will I cope? +
You will. The first stretch of every class is nothing but settling the pulse into your body before a single step is named, and the bounce is drilled slowly and on its own. Most people who arrive convinced they have no rhythm are grooving through a short phrase by the end of the hour.
What should I wear? +
Comfortable clothes you can move low in and clean trainers with a flat sole that lets you pivot — no jeans and nothing that grips the floor. Bring water. That is genuinely all; leave the fresh, box-white sneakers at home for the first few weeks.
Do you teach real foundations or screen-copied routines? +
Foundations first, always. We build the grounded bounce and credit each named social step to where it came from, so you understand the party-dance roots rather than just miming a video. Short runs are layered on afterwards, once the groove is honestly in your legs.
Can you bring hip-hop to a school, university society or youth group? +
Yes — a come-to-you workshop is one of the things we do most. We bring the class to a school hall, a college or university society space, or a community room anywhere across Oxford and Oxfordshire, and pitch the content to the age and level of the group.
Do you run sessions for children and teenagers? +
Our weekly drop-in is aimed at adults, but come-to-you workshops can be built for younger age groups on request. For regular children's hip-hop in Oxford, Body Politic teaches from around age five at the Pegasus Theatre and is well worth contacting directly.
