Beginners Class — 60 Minutes
Sink Into the Bounce
The hour opens on the head-nod and the soft knee-dip — the pulse hiding under every hip-hop move — and we keep it unhurried. It is also the easiest way to loosen a room of people who arrived not knowing a soul.
One Named Move, Learned Properly
Every session introduces one social dance on its own, plus the story of it — who set it going and roughly what era — so you leave with the true version, not a fuzzy imitation copied off a screen.
Stitch a Short Piece
Those moves get sewn onto a compact routine over a hip-hop or chart cut, then we go looking for the hits and the held beats that lift it from marking-through into properly dancing it.
Answer the Music
Easy improv games whose only instruction is to listen and answer back — nobody watching, nothing scored, just space to test an idea and get some faith in the timing you already own.
One Fast Run, Then Ease Down
A closing pass at full tempo to lodge the routine for good, followed by a cool-down that gives the lower legs some overdue care after sixty minutes of springing off them.
About Hip-Hop Classes in Coventry
Hip-hop gets a whole hour to itself here, not a passing mention on a quick lap around the street-dance styles. Our hip-hop classes in Coventry let the style stretch out and take its time: the grooves that drive it, the social dances that carry real names, and routines cut to hip-hop and chart tracks — handled as a discipline worth an hour of its own, not a quick sampler wedged in among others.
Coventry, of all cities, knows what a beat can do. This is where 2 Tone was born — The Specials, The Selecter and Jerry Dammers' black-and-white label fused Jamaican ska with punk right here in the late seventies, and made unity the whole point of it. That same appetite for rhythm still turns up at the door, sharpened by the young crowd two universities keep pouring into town.
Turning up unable to join two moves together is completely ordinary — nearly everyone in the beginner class started exactly there. We take the groove to bits until it runs on its own, then build upward. Our floors sit around the city centre near Broadgate, over at FarGo Village on Far Gosford Street, or along medieval Spon Street; you will be told which is yours when you book. A drop-in is £8 with nothing to sign, and under-18s train in their own supervised groups.

Why Choose Hip-Hop in Coventry?
A Full Hour on One Style
Rather than skating over half a dozen street styles and doing none of them justice, this class parks itself inside hip-hop — a single branch, given enough slow, patient time to actually bed in.
Born in a Music City
Coventry gave the world 2 Tone and the ska revival, a sound built on getting a whole room moving together. That instinct for a beat is in the city's DNA, and it walks in with every dancer.
Under-18s Have Their Own
Younger dancers work in age-banded groups led by DBS-checked teachers, and hip-hop reliably fills up on the under-18 side of the Coventry schedule — one of the most-requested classes we run for that age.
Beginners Are the Norm
Arriving with no steps at all is simply how most people start. The dancer beside you was almost certainly in the same boat a term ago and has long since forgotten the wobble.
Your Hip-Hop Journey
From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.
Finding the Groove
Where You Start
These weeks go on bounce, rock and a first named dance, chasing a comfortable feel over the beat before anything else. Sharpness follows later — it mostly arrives once the groove is there.
What to Bring
Joggers or trackies, a top you don't mind sweating in, and flat cushioned trainers. Past that, your own look is welcome the moment you have settled in.
Stacking the Moves
Growing the Vocabulary
A fresh party dance most weeks, plus choreography that keeps sharpening, until the accents and pauses start snapping to the record beneath them.
First Freestyle
The improv drills nudge forward — brief solo turns, question-and-answer phrases, and standing behind your own decisions as the music keeps moving underneath.
Sounding Like You
Your Own Stamp
Longer choreography and open freestyles where you start stretching the counts and stamping your own mark on them, instead of shadowing whoever is out in front.
One of the Room
Comfortable enough to take your turn in the cypher, greeted by name at the door — by now Coventry's hip-hop scene is somewhere you belong rather than somewhere you visit.
Holding Your Own
Digging In
More demanding routines, a finer ear for the music, and improvisation you can lean on when a song lobs in something you didn't see coming.
Where Next
Our own events and showcases, or the battles and jams the student crowd keeps bubbling away — plenty to enter or simply watch once you fancy it.
Hip-Hop in Coventry FAQ
Everything you need to know before your first class.
How is this different from the street dance class? +
Street dance is the whole family — over a term it rotates through popping, locking, house and breaking. Hip-hop is one member of that family, and this hour stays with it alone: the grooves, the social dances people can actually name, and choreography set to hip-hop and chart records. Plenty of dancers take both, back to back.
Whereabouts in Coventry are the classes? +
Partner studios sit around the city centre by Broadgate, at FarGo Village on Far Gosford Street and along medieval Spon Street, with the under-18 groups spreading a little wider. You will hear the exact venue once your place is booked, and nearly all are a short walk in from the station or the ring-road car parks.
I genuinely can't dance — will I manage? +
You will. It is all constructed up from that basic bounce, one piece at a time, and true beginners are the bulk of the starter class. Far from being the odd one out, you'd be part of the biggest group in the room.
Is a session more choreography or freestyle? +
Both, every week. A normal night gives you a party dance or two and a stretch of choreography, then some guided improv — short drills with nobody put on the spot. A few weeks in, most people are angling to get into the circle.
What should I wear? +
Loose gear you can sweat in and flat trainers with a good cushioned sole. Hip-hop has always prized personal style, so beyond comfortable and practical, turn up looking however feels like you.
What's the cost, and is there any commitment? +
It's £8 to drop in, settled on the night, and you're never locked into anything. As soon as your nearest studio fixes a weekly time, cheaper multi-week blocks open up alongside the per-session price.
Do you run this for kids and teens? +
Yes — under-18s have their own age-banded sessions with DBS-checked staff, and hip-hop is among the styles that age group asks for most. Flag the age on your enquiry and we'll steer you to the correct session.
Once I'm hooked, is there anywhere in Coventry to take it? +
There is. Coventry University in the centre and Warwick out to the south keep a young, international crowd in town, so the calendar throws up jams, battles and showcases all year. Say the word and we'll point you toward the one worth your while.
Can you bring hip-hop out to a venue of ours? +
Of course — the class travels. We'll set up youth-group sessions, birthday parties and school workshops anywhere across Coventry and Warwickshire, from Earlsdon and Foleshill out to Kenilworth, Leamington and Rugby. Just drop your area on the form.
