Class Structure

Beginners Class — 60 Minutes

0–10 mins

Groove & Bounce

Settle into the two-step, bounce and rock that sit under every hip-hop move, loosening up to the track before anything harder arrives.

10–25 mins

Party Dance of the Week

One named social dance taught properly with the story behind it — the Running Man, the Dougie, the Cabbage Patch — a fresh one each session.

25–40 mins

Choreography Block

The week's vocabulary strung into a short routine cut to a hip-hop or chart track, counts called out loud until it holds.

40–50 mins

Musicality & Texture

Playing with hitting the beat hard or riding it lazy, so the same eight counts can read three completely different ways.

50–60 mins

Freestyle Circle & Stretch

An optional cypher to try it your own way, then a proper cool-down to close the hour out.

About Hip-Hop Classes in Stoke-on-Trent

Hip-hop is its own thing here, not a slot in a street-dance rotation. Street dance is the umbrella — locking, popping, breaking, house. Hip-hop stays home: the grooves it grew from, the party dances people actually did at the function, and choreography set to hip-hop and today's charts. Given a whole class, it becomes a craft rather than a quick sample.

Stoke-on-Trent already trains a fair bit of this. There's a genuine local scene — crews rehearsing around Stoke town, dedicated street work down in Longton and breaking coached seriously up in Tunstall — so you're joining something live. Our hip-hop dance classes in Stoke-on-Trent teach from partner studios in Stoke town near the station and across the Longton and Tunstall pockets, the room named when you book.

Most people walk in unable to link two moves, and that is exactly the starting line — groove first, everything stacked on afterwards. Drop-in is £8 with nothing to sign, and under-18s train in their own age-grouped, supervised sessions. Remember the railway station sits in Stoke town, not the Hanley centre, so check which of the six towns your studio is in before you set off.

Why Choose Hip-Hop in Stoke-on-Trent?

Hip-Hop, Not the Sampler

This is hip-hop given its own class — grooves, party dances and choreography — rather than one move borrowed from a street-dance mix.

A City That Already Dances It

Stoke has a working hip-hop and breaking base across Longton, Stoke town and Tunstall, so you're stepping into something live, not starting it from scratch.

Groove Before Choreography

We drill the bounce and rock first, so the routines land on a real foundation — the way the style was actually built.

Kids and Teens Too

Age-grouped children's and teen classes run alongside the adult floor, every one led by DBS-checked teachers.

Your Hip-Hop Journey

From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.

Week 1–4

Find the Bounce

Getting Going

Grooves, the two-step and your first named party dance — the goal is rhythm and confidence, not a finished routine.

What to Wear

Comfy clothes you can sweat in and flat trainers with a bit of cushioning. No special gear at all.

Month 2–3

Build a Vocabulary

Party Dances

Collecting named social dances week by week, each with the history that makes it more than a move.

First Routines

Short choreography cut to hip-hop and chart tracks, learned count by count until it sticks.

Month 4–6

Find Your Texture

Musicality

Hitting versus riding the beat, learning to make the same eight counts unmistakably your own.

Freestyle

The closing cypher stops being frightening as structured drills build the nerve to move unplanned.

Month 6+

Your Own Style

Advanced Choreo

Longer, sharper routines that stack everything you've gathered into real performance material.

The Local Scene

Jams, battles and crews around the city to step into when you're ready — your teachers know where.

Hip-Hop in Stoke-on-Trent FAQ

Everything you need to know before your first class.

Where in Stoke-on-Trent are the hip-hop classes held? +

Partner studios across the six towns — mainly Stoke town near the railway station, plus the Longton and Tunstall dance pockets. You'll be told your exact room when your place is confirmed; the city is spread out, so we match you to the nearest one.

Is hip-hop the same as your street dance class? +

No. Street dance is the umbrella — locking, popping, breaking and house rotated through the sessions. Hip-hop keeps to its own lane: the grooves, the named party dances and choreography set to hip-hop and chart tracks. Plenty of people do both.

Do I need any experience to start? +

None at all. Most of the room walks in unable to link two moves. Every class opens with the groove — the bounce anyone can find — and stacks from there, so beginners are the norm, not the exception.

How much does a hip-hop class in Stoke-on-Trent cost? +

Drop-in is £8, paid per session with nothing to join and no contract. Discounted blocks come once your local studio's regular timetable is set.

What should I wear to a hip-hop class? +

Clothes you can move and sweat in, and flat trainers with a little cushioning. Hip-hop rates personal style, so past that, wear whatever feels like you.

Can adults learn or is it mainly for kids? +

Adults from 17 to 75 share the main class. Under-18s have their own age-grouped, supervised sessions — 15–16, 9–14 and 6–8 — all with DBS-checked teachers.

Will we learn actual party dances? +

Yes — a named social dance most weeks, taught with the story behind it, from the Running Man to far more recent ones. They're the backbone of hip-hop and the most fun way in.

Is there breaking in the hip-hop class? +

A little top rock and groundwork, but breaking is really its own discipline, and Stoke has coaches who specialise in it. If it grabs you, we'll point you their way.

Do I have to freestyle in front of everyone? +

Never on demand. The closing cypher is always optional, though most people talk themselves into it by the second month. Structured freestyle drills build the courage gently first.
