Class Structure
Beginners Class — 60 Minutes
Roll Call & Loosen Up
We open with a light cardio warm-up and isolations — head, ribs, hips — so the joints that carry hip-hop are awake before we move.
Grooves & Bounce
The heartbeat of the style: the bounce, the two-step and a couple of classic party grooves you can drop at any function without a routine.
Pick Your Lane
A taste of both sides — breaking toprock and basic footwork, then a sharp commercial eight-count — so you feel the difference in your own body.
Build The Routine
We stitch the night's moves into a short combo to a current track, layering it slowly until the whole room hits the same counts.
Cypher & Cool-Down
An optional freestyle circle for anyone who wants it, then a proper stretch so you leave loose rather than stiff the next morning.
About Hip-Hop Classes in Ipswich
Ipswich already has a real street scene to plug into, which is why our hip-hop classes in Ipswich are built to feed straight back into it rather than exist in a bubble. DanceEast runs youth and community street work out of the Jerwood DanceHouse on the Waterfront, Lait Dance Club has taught street and social dance in the town for years, and the Suffolk Academy of Dance and Performing Arts groups hip-hop, street and commercial under one roof — while CDC Street Dance carries UDO-qualified competition leadership. We reference that scene rather than partner with it: our sessions give you a friendly first door into the same movement vocabulary.
The word "hip-hop" gets used for three fairly different things, and beginners deserve to know which one they are learning. Breaking is the floor-and-freeze battle language — toprock, footwork, freezes. Hip-hop proper is the upright party-dance side — bounce, grooves, the two-step and the social steps that came before choreography. Commercial is the music-video, sharp-to-the-camera choreography you see behind pop acts. Our beginners class starts you on grooves and foundations, then lets you lean toward breaking or commercial once your body knows the pocket.
No experience, no crew, no gear beyond trainers you can pivot in — that is genuinely all you need to start. Whether you have watched the DanceEast programme from the Waterfront and fancied a go, or you just want a Tuesday-night reason to move, you get a coach who breaks every count down slowly and a room where nobody is watching you fall. Every drop-in is £8, paid per session, so you can try it once with no strings.

Why Choose Hip-Hop in Ipswich?
Serious Cardio, Zero Gym Vibe
A single hour of grooves and drills burns like a spin class, but you are too busy learning the routine to notice you are working.
Freestyle Without Fear
We drip-feed improvisation from week one, so the cypher stops being scary and starts being the best part of your night.
Into The Ipswich Scene
Learn the same vocabulary the Waterfront and town-centre street crews use, so you can walk into a class or jam anywhere and keep up.
Come As You Are
Trainers and comfy clothes, no crew, no experience — the beginners room is genuinely built for a total first-timer.
Your Hip-Hop Journey
From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.
First Session
Find The Bounce
Your first class is all about the pocket — landing on the beat with a relaxed knee. Get that and everything else stacks on top.
No Wrong Moves
We keep the counts short and repeat them until they are muscle memory, so you leave with one groove you actually own.
Weeks 2–4
String It Together
Grooves become phrases: you start linking four or five moves and reading the transitions between them.
Your Own Flavour
We show the same step three ways so you begin choosing how you hit it — the first sign of a personal style.
Weeks 5–8
Breaking Or Commercial
By now you can feel which lane pulls you. We start tailoring drills toward floorwork and freezes, or toward camera-sharp choreography.
Full Routines
Class combos get longer and faster, and you can hold a 32-count sequence to tempo without the count being called out.
Ongoing
Cypher Confident
Freestyle stops being a fear and becomes a want — you jump into the circle because you have moves to spend.
Take It Further
Plenty of dancers use us as a stepping stone into the town's dedicated street schools or DanceEast's open programme.
Hip-Hop in Ipswich FAQ
Everything you need to know before your first class.
Do I need any hip-hop experience to start? +
None at all. The beginners class assumes you have never taken a street class before, and we break every groove down to a slow count before we ever run it up to tempo.
Is this breaking, or the music-video kind of dance? +
We start everyone on hip-hop grooves and foundations, then give you a taste of both breaking floorwork and commercial choreography so you can lean toward whichever one you enjoy most.
What should I wear and bring? +
Comfortable clothes you can move freely in and clean trainers with a bit of pivot — not grippy running shoes. Bring water; we build up a real sweat.
How much does a class cost? +
Every drop-in session is £8, paid per class. There are no memberships, blocks or contracts, so you can come once, skip a week, or make it a habit.
How do I get to the class in Ipswich? +
Ipswich has no tram or metro, so it is buses and the town's road network, or a short hop from Ipswich railway station. Your confirmed studio — town centre or Waterfront side — comes with parking and walking directions when you book.
What age is the class for? +
Our advertised beginners sessions are aimed at ages 17 to 75, and hip-hop suits every one of them. If you are enquiring for a younger dancer, tell us the age and we will point you to the right group.
Can I come with a friend? +
Absolutely, and most first-timers do. A lot of people find the first cypher far less intimidating when there is a familiar face already laughing next to them in the circle.
Are you connected to DanceEast or the town's street schools? +
No — we reference the Ipswich scene to show you where it can lead, but we are an independent class and hold no partnership with DanceEast, CDC, Lait or the Suffolk Academy.
Can I book a hip-hop session for a group or party? +
Yes. As well as weekly drop-ins we run one-off private sessions for birthdays, work socials and hen groups anywhere across Ipswich and Suffolk — just tell us the numbers and the vibe.
