Class Structure
Beginners Class — 60 Minutes
Loosen Off to a Full Track
We start moving to a whole record rather than a dry count, letting the beat settle through the neck, ribs and knees so nothing feels forced once the naming starts.
Build the Bounce First
Everything hangs off the weighted rock-back, so we drill and loop it before anything showier — until it runs on its own, the rest never sits right.
A Social Step, Named and Placed
We pick one recognisable party dance, say who made it and where it came from, then take it apart slowly enough that it lodges properly instead of blurring past.
Thread It Into a Phrase
Two or three pieces from the hour get joined into a short run you can keep hold of, counted aloud until the numbers drop away on their own.
Open Circle, Then Cool Down
There is a relaxed cypher for anyone who wants a turn in the middle — sitting it out is genuinely fine — then we ease the legs down before you head back out.
About Hip-Hop Classes in Middlesbrough
The Loft Studios on Linthorpe Road is the genuine home of street and hip-hop in the town — it is the name that comes up first whenever someone asks where to learn, and it has carried commercial, street and hip-hop work for years. When we run hip-hop classes in Middlesbrough we are adding one honest adult lane to a scene that already stands up on its own, not claiming to be the only floor going. We reference that scene with respect and we are an independent class, not partnered with The Loft or anyone else named here.
It is worth being straight about what hip-hop actually means, because the word gets stretched over four different things. Breaking is the floor side — the drops, spins and freezes. Commercial is the polished music-video finish behind pop acts, which is closer to what The Loft's commercial stream covers. House is the fast, travelling club footwork. Our hour sits in the middle of all that: the upright bounce, the social party dances that came out of block parties and clubs, and short routines stitched on top once the groove is actually in your body.
Middlesbrough station drops you a few minutes' walk from the centre, and there is no tram to worry about here — you arrive by train or bus and walk in. Wear whatever you can move in and bring cushioned trainers; there is no kit to buy. It is £8 on the day, no term to sign, no card kept on file. If you would rather we came to you, we take the class out across Teesside — Linthorpe, Acklam, Marton, Nunthorpe, Coulby Newham and Ormesby — so a youth group or a set of mates can host it.

Why Choose Hip-Hop in Middlesbrough?
A Whole Hour on One Groove
No cramming breaking, popping, house and locking into sixty minutes. The full hour goes to hip-hop's own centre, so the bounce actually beds in rather than being skated over.
Honest About the Local Scene
The Loft on Linthorpe Road already carries street and hip-hop in town, and we say so plainly. We add a steady adult groove class; we do not pretend to be the only option in Middlesbrough.
Foundations Before Choreography
Every social dance is pulled apart, named and rebuilt before it reaches a routine, so it lives in your body instead of being traced off a phone screen and gone by the weekend.
We'll Come Across Teesside
Can't get to the centre? We bring the class out to Acklam, Marton, Nunthorpe and the rest of Teesside for schools, youth groups and private sets.
Your Hip-Hop Journey
From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.
Settling Into the Rock
In the room
The opening month barely touches choreography. It is groove work — weight shifts, the rock and timing repeated until leaning on the beat feels natural instead of fought.
By the end
You hold a steady pulse across an entire song and own a small handful of social steps you can throw down on cue.
Widening the Shelf
In the room
We add more party dances, introduce turns and level changes, and assemble your first real eight-count run from the pieces you have banked.
By the end
You follow the teacher in real time and lift a fresh sequence without needing every beat announced.
Carrying a Song
In the room
Runs get longer, the joins get tidier, and your personal accent starts to show — timing, attack, where you choose to hang back.
By the end
A complete routine to a track you rate, performed with intent rather than merely got through.
Sounding Like You
In the room
Cyphers and freestyle games take up more of the room, and the set choreography deliberately leaves holes for you to answer yourself.
By the end
You look like you inside the form — the point was never to become a mirror of whoever is teaching.
Hip-Hop in Middlesbrough FAQ
Everything you need to know before your first class.
Where in Middlesbrough do the hip-hop classes happen? +
A studio on the central side, a short walk from Middlesbrough railway station and the bus station, so the train or a town-centre bus both drop you close. There is no tram in Middlesbrough, so it is genuinely a walk-in from the middle of town.
What's the price of a hip-hop class? +
£8, handed over on the day. No joining fee, no block to buy in advance and no term you are tied to — you only ever cover the one session in front of you, on whatever weeks you can get to.
How's this different from a general street-dance class? +
A street class tends to cycle through popping, locking, breaking and house inside the hour. This one gives all sixty minutes to hip-hop's own middle — the groove, the social party dances and the choreography built off them — so one thing goes deep instead of four skimming past.
Isn't hip-hop already covered by The Loft Studios? +
The Loft on Linthorpe Road genuinely leads street and hip-hop searches in Middlesbrough, and we are upfront about that. What we add is a relaxed adult groove class for people who want the party-dance side without stepping onto a competition or exam track — different job, same respect for the scene.
I honestly have no rhythm — will I sink? +
Rhythm is trained, not issued at birth, and the bounce foundations are exactly the tool that trains it. Nearly everyone says the same in week one, then finds themselves grooving through a track a month later.
What should I wear? +
Comfortable clothes you do not have to fuss over and flat trainers with a bit of cushioning. The culture reads how you carry yourself long before it reads a logo, so if you can move and you are comfortable, you are dressed correctly.
Do you teach real foundations or just copy-the-screen routines? +
Foundations. Each social dance gets named, its roots explained and its mechanics rebuilt before it goes anywhere near a routine, so it settles into your body properly rather than being copied off a screen and forgotten.
Can you bring hip-hop to our school or youth group? +
Yes — we take it out across Teesside, to Linthorpe, Acklam, Marton, Nunthorpe, Coulby Newham and Ormesby. Put the venue on the enquiry form and we will sort the rest.
Do you run sessions for children and teenagers? +
We do. Under-18s dance in their own age-banded groups with DBS-checked teachers, kept apart from the adult class. Add the dancer's age on the form and we will point you to the right session.
