Class Structure
Beginners Class — 60 Minutes
Warm-Up & Body Movement
We loosen hips, ribs and shoulders — bachata lives in the body, so we spend real time on relaxed, controlled movement before any steps.
The Basic Step
You learn the side-to-side and forward-back basic with its little tap, counted slowly until your feet stop thinking about it.
Lead & Follow
In pairs we add a gentle frame and the first turns — how to signal, how to receive, and how to keep the connection soft.
Musicality
We listen for the bachata guitar and the syncopated tap, matching your movement to the song instead of a metronome.
Social Practice
We put on a track and dance socially, rotating partners so you finish having danced a whole song with several people.
About Bachata Classes in York
Bachata began in the Dominican Republic — a guitar-led, hip-swaying partner dance that has quietly become one of the most popular Latin styles in Britain. Our bachata classes in York teach the sensual, grounded version most social floors dance today, starting from the very first side-step so nobody feels left behind.
York already has a warm Latin following. Humba Rumba runs a well-known Wednesday salsa and Latin night at Revolution on Coney Street, and there is a real appetite for partner dancing across the city. We add a dedicated bachata track — eight-count basics, body movement, and the lead-and-follow signals that let you dance with anyone, whether you learn near the Ouse or in a studio inside the Bar Walls.
You do not need a partner or any experience. We rotate everyone through the room so you practise with different people, build confidence gently, and leave able to hold a simple bachata to whatever song the DJ plays.

Why Choose Bachata in York?
No Partner Required
Come solo or with a friend — we rotate the room every few minutes, so you always have someone to practise the lead-and-follow with.
A Real Latin Scene
York has live Latin nights, including Humba Rumba's Wednesday session at Revolution on Coney Street — our classes give you the confidence to join in.
Connection, Not Tricks
We teach the soft frame, timing and body movement that make bachata feel good, long before any flashy dips or turns.
Just £8 a Class
Every session is a flat £8 drop-in — no membership, no term fees, no pressure to commit weeks ahead.
Your Bachata Journey
From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.
Your First Month
Finding the beat
You get comfortable with the basic step and the bachata tap, dancing to slower songs until the timing feels natural.
Dancing with anyone
Rotating partners each week, you stop relying on one person and start reading a lead or a follow from a stranger.
Building Up
Turns & body movement
Underarm turns, the basic hip motion and a cross-body lead give you three or four moves you can string together.
Hearing the song
You begin to phrase your dance — pausing on the pause, moving on the guitar — instead of stepping mechanically.
Social-Floor Ready
A full song, start to finish
You can dance an entire bachata without counting out loud, adapting to the music and your partner.
Out in York
You have the tools to go to a Latin night in the city and actually get on the floor rather than watching from the bar.
Keeping It Going
Your own style
Sensual bachata, more traditional Dominican, or somewhere in between — you choose how you want to move.
Part of the scene
Regulars often meet up at York's Latin socials, and dancing becomes a weekly night out rather than just a class.
Bachata in York FAQ
Everything you need to know before your first class.
Do I need a partner for bachata classes in York? +
No. Most people arrive on their own. We rotate everyone around the room during class so you always have someone to practise with, and you learn to lead or follow anybody — which is exactly what you need for a social night.
I have never danced before — is that a problem? +
Not at all. Our beginner bachata is built for complete newcomers. We start with a single side-step and add one idea at a time, so you are never expected to know anything in advance.
How much does a class cost? +
It is a flat £8 per session, paid as a drop-in. There is no membership, joining fee or block booking — just come the weeks that suit you.
What should I wear? +
Comfortable clothes you can move in, and shoes with a smooth sole that let you pivot — grippy trainers can catch on the floor. Bring water; bachata is warmer work than it looks.
Where are the classes held? +
In central York studios near the Coppergate and Shambles side of the centre, with a second option on the Clifton and Bootham side. The exact address is confirmed when you book, and both are reachable on foot from the railway station or by bus.
Is bachata the same as salsa? +
They are cousins, not twins. Salsa is faster and more circular; bachata is slower, side-to-side and closer, with a distinctive tap on the fourth beat. If you already do salsa — for example at Humba Rumba's Wednesday nights on Coney Street — bachata comes quickly.
Can I come with my partner? +
Of course. Couples are welcome and you can dance together the whole class. We would still gently encourage rotating now and then, because dancing with different people makes you a stronger lead or follow.
How long until I can dance socially? +
Most people feel ready to try a relaxed Latin social within a couple of months of regular attendance. You will not know every move, but you will be able to hold a simple, musical bachata from start to finish.
How do I book a place? +
Fill in the enquiry form on this page with your name and the days that suit you, and we will send back current times and the confirmed venue. You can also call us on 07759 656300.
