Class Structure
Beginners Class — 60 Minutes
Warm & Loose
We open with slow hip circles, rib slides and gentle weight changes over a soft Dominican track, so the body wakes up before any step gets a name.
The Base Step
Side-to-side timing, the tap on four, the forward-and-back — drilled quietly until your feet stop thinking and simply land on the beat.
Lead, Follow, Listen
In a light hold we cover how a lead is offered through the frame and how a follow answers it — a two-way conversation, never a shove.
Turns Into Runs
Inside and outside turns fold into short strings of footwork, so a handful of moves becomes something you can dance to a whole song.
Rotate & Wind Down
Everyone swaps partners for a relaxed open dance, then we stretch out the hips and calves and call it a night.
About Bachata Classes in Cheltenham
Bachata came out of the Dominican Republic as a close, unhurried partner dance, and its charm is simple: a four-count sway anyone can pick up on the first night, dressed up over time with body movement, turns and quiet connection. Our Cheltenham sessions treat the basics as the whole point — get the rhythm honest and the rest follows.
Cheltenham already moves after dark. The bars around Montpellier and the Brewery Quarter fill up, and every summer the town's Jazz Festival brings live rhythm to the Promenade — yet a steady, structured weekly bachata class in the centre has been thin on the ground. Sabor Salsa has long flown the Latin flag locally; we sit alongside that scene rather than on top of it, adding a beginner-first drop-in for people who want to be taught slowly. Every session is £8, paid on the night, with nothing to commit to.
You never need to bring a partner. We rotate the room so you dance with everyone, which also happens to be the fastest way to learn to lead or follow properly. Smooth-soled shoes are ideal to begin with; grippy soles fight your turns, so leave the running trainers at home.

Why Choose Bachata in Cheltenham?
Come On Your Own
Partners rotate every few minutes, so a solo booking dances the whole hour and picks up lead-and-follow far quicker than a fixed couple ever would.
Hear the Song
We unpick the difference between the smooth verse and the driving mambo, so you place a move where the music actually asks for it.
Ready for a Social
Bachata travels — once the base is in your body you can walk into a Latin night here, at a festival or on holiday and simply join in.
Connection, Not Choreography
This is about reading another person through a light frame, a skill that stays useful long after you step off the floor.
Your Bachata Journey
From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.
The First Nights
Getting the Sway
Base step, the tap on four and a first simple turn, plus tuning your ear to the one-two-three-and count under a bachata track.
What to Pack
Comfortable clothes and clean, smooth-soled shoes. Socks will do for a first go; a bottle of water is the only other essential.
Finding the Feel
Adding Texture
Cross-body leads, inside turns and the first body waves, plus the start of the traditional-versus-sensual styling difference.
Every Partner Teaches
By now you will have danced with most of the regulars, and each one hands you a slightly different sense of timing and connection.
Dancing for Real
Joining Moves Up
Short combinations of turns and footwork you improvise inside, answering the music rather than counting it.
Your First Social
Confident enough to try a bachata night out — the drills quietly become instinct once the floor is busy.
Owning It
Playing With Music
Hitting breaks, riding the mambo, shaping a whole song with a partner instead of repeating patterns.
Where Next
Salsa and tango sit naturally alongside bachata, or gather friends for a one-off Latin session through our group classes.
Bachata in Cheltenham FAQ
Everything you need to know before your first class.
Is bachata hard for a total beginner? +
Not at all — the base is a four-count side step, and our Cheltenham class starts exactly there. Most people are moving in time within the first half hour, and the beginner session assumes you have never partnered before.
Do I have to bring someone to dance with? +
No. Partners rotate through the whole class, so booking on your own is completely normal and honestly the better way to learn. You will dance with the entire room over an hour.
What does a class cost? +
Every drop-in is a flat £8, paid on the night. There is no membership, no joining fee and nothing to sign — turn up when it suits you.
Where will the Cheltenham classes be held? +
We are confirming a central studio near the Promenade and Montpellier, an easy walk from the town centre. Cheltenham Spa station sits west of the middle of town, roughly a fifteen-minute stroll or a short bus or taxi hop away.
Should I worry about race week or festival dates? +
Only for logistics. When the Cheltenham Festival and Gold Cup take over Prestbury Park in March — and during the Jazz, Science, Literature and Music festivals — traffic, parking and taxis all get busy and rooms cost more. Leave extra time and check a central car park such as Regent Arcade or Rodney Road, noting their evening closing times, before you set off.
Isn't bachata just slow salsa? +
They are separate dances. Salsa is quick and travels in lines; bachata is slower, more grounded and built around body movement and a close hold. Plenty of our dancers happily do both.
What should I wear? +
Anything you can move in, with shoes that slide rather than grip — smooth soles beat chunky trainers for turning. Clean socks are fine on a first visit.
What kind of music do you use? +
A spread of traditional Dominican bachata and modern sensual remixes — the likes of Prince Royce and Aventura alongside crossover tracks that keep the room smiling.
Can I book a private or a group session? +
Yes. One-to-one and couple lessons run by arrangement, and a group of friends can book a one-off Latin session — just get in touch with rough numbers and we will sort a flat quote.
