Beginners Class — 60 Minutes
Find the pulse first
We start with loose hip rolls, a bit of a shoulder shimmy and a walk on the spot, so your body meets the bachata beat before your feet are asked to do anything at all.
The basic, unhurried
Side-close-side both ways and the little tap on four, danced solo until it stops feeling like counting and starts feeling like breathing, then tried out facing someone.
A first turn and the frame
How to hold a soft frame, offer a lead through the hand and take a simple turn without rushing it — the moment two dancers start actually talking to each other.
String it together
We knit the basic, a turn and a touch of body movement into a short run you could dance to any song that comes on afterwards.
Rotate, then wind down
Open floor swapping around the room so everyone dances with everyone, a few slower tracks, then a stretch to close the hour.
About Bachata Classes in Swansea
Bachata was born in the rural cantinas of the Dominican Republic and travelled the world as the softest, most forgiving of the Latin partner dances: a four-count that leans gently side to side, layered over time with a loose sway of the hips, unhurried turns and a quiet give-and-take between two dancers. Our bachata classes in Swansea drop you in at that very first count, where the feel of the music matters far more than any clever move.
The city already dances to this rhythm most weeks of the year. Swansea has a genuine Latin following — the socials that run out of the Marina and SA1, the salsa-and-bachata rooms that fill the bars off Wind Street, the crowd that keeps kizomba and bachata alive around Uplands. Names like Dancing Fever and AlSalsa have carried that scene for years, and we tip our hat to them; what we run is a separate, unhurried beginners' hour where turning up alone and knowing nothing is exactly the plan.
Every session is a flat £8, handed over on the night, with nothing to sign and no block to buy up front. Arrive solo or drag a mate along — we teach right across Swansea, out to the Mumbles and over the Gower, calling in on Brynmill, Sketty, Killay, Morriston and Penclawdd, and every class is pitched at grown-ups who have never partnered before.

Why Choose Bachata in Swansea?
Turn up with nobody
We rotate the whole room, so a partner is never required. Most people walk in on their own and leave having danced with half the class.
Slower than salsa
Bachata sits at a gentler, more romantic tempo, which is why nervous first-timers so often find it the kindest Latin dance to begin with.
Feel over routine
This is led and followed in the moment rather than memorised, so the emphasis stays on relaxed connection instead of drilling a fixed sequence.
£8, nothing more
One flat fee a class, paid as you arrive. No termly bill, no direct debit and no guilt if you miss a week or two along the way.
Your Bachata Journey
From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.
The opening weeks
Just the basic
Your first classes live entirely inside the four-count and a calm frame. It looks like very little, yet it is genuinely the whole dance folded up small.
What to bring
Clothes you can move freely in and a smooth sole that will slide and pivot — leave the gripping trainers at home, and bring a bottle of water.
It starts to flow
Turns land on time
The inside and outside turns stop being a panic and begin arriving exactly on the beat, which is when bachata suddenly reads as dancing.
Trading signals
You get comfortable sending and receiving a light cue through the hands, so a stranger on the floor becomes an easy partner in seconds.
Your own flavour
The sway arrives
Soft movement through the hips and ribcage settles over the steps and gives your bachata that unmistakable, laid-back roll.
Hearing the song
You begin to notice where a track wants to pause or lean, and let the music steer the dance rather than counting straight over it.
Out on the social floor
Ready for a night out
A handful of turns and a dependable basic are all you need to hold your own at a Swansea bachata social down by the Marina.
Where people go next
Plenty pick up salsa alongside it; others simply keep coming back for the weekly, sociable pleasure of a dance and a laugh.
Bachata in Swansea FAQ
Everything you need to know before your first class.
Do I have to bring a partner? +
Not at all — come by yourself with a clear conscience. We rotate everyone around the room through the hour, so you dance the whole time whether you arrived alone or in a group.
I have genuinely never danced — will I cope? +
Easily. This room is built for absolute first-timers; we begin at the single side step and take for granted that you know nothing, because most people in it don't either.
How much is a class? +
A flat £8, settled on the night. There is no joining fee, no term to commit to and no rolling contract lurking behind it.
What should I wear on my feet? +
Anything comfy to move in, with a smooth sole that lets you turn — gym trainers with a lot of grip are the one thing that will fight you. Bring water too.
Are you run by Dancing Fever or AlSalsa? +
No. They are a valued part of Swansea's Latin scene and we are glad to point you their way, but our weekly beginners' class is run independently by Dance Centre UK.
Is bachata just slower salsa? +
They are relatives rather than the same dance. Salsa is quicker and travels in circles; bachata is closer, kept to four counts, softer in the body and warmer in mood. Learning one tends to help the other.
Whereabouts in Swansea do you teach? +
Around the city centre near Castle Square and the Marina, with sessions out towards Uplands and Brynmill too; the exact studio is confirmed when you book, always within easy reach of the bus routes and the railway station.
Can I come as a group or for a hen do? +
Of course. Bring as many friends as you fancy, or ask us about a private bachata session for a hen party anywhere across Swansea, the Mumbles or Gower.
How often is worth coming? +
Once a week keeps you moving forward nicely. Bachata rewards showing up steadily far more than it rewards one heroic burst of effort.
