Class Structure
Beginners Class — 60 Minutes
Loosening the Hips
We open with easy hip and knee mobility, then tune your ear to bachata's four-count inside the guitar line before a single foot moves.
The Side Basic
The travelling side-step with its soft hip tap, pulled apart and walked at half tempo until your feet find it without you watching them.
Partnering Up
Into the rotation, meeting the give-and-take of a gentle lead and follow, then a first under-arm turn taken calmly rather than snatched.
The Signature Roll
The relaxed rolling hip that marks the dance out, kept natural and layered onto steps you can already hold on their own.
Dancing a Track
We thread the night's pieces into one whole song, so you leave having actually danced bachata rather than drilling fragments of it.
About Bachata Classes in Reading
Bachata came out of the Dominican Republic as guitar-driven music for heartbreak, made to be danced slow and close. For a beginner that unhurried tempo is a genuine head start — no scramble to keep pace, no thicket of spins, just a step to the side and an easy roll through the hip. Most people are dancing to a real song inside their first half hour.
Reading has a proper Latin scene to grow into, which matters — Salsa Bachata Social Club runs beginner courses, socials and parties around Chatham Street and the town centre, so once your basics land there are genuine floors to use rather than an empty promise. Our beginner rooms sit in the town centre near Friar Street, with the exact studio confirmed the moment you book.
Getting in is simple. Reading station, with Elizabeth line, GWR and South Western trains, drops you a short walk from the central rooms; Reading Buses cover the rest, as the town has no tram or metro. Evening parking at the Oracle is paid and busy at weekends, so the train is usually the calmer arrival.

Why Choose Bachata in Reading?
Come Alone, Leave With a Room
The whole class rotates partners across the hour, so booking solo just means a floor of people to practise with. Arrive as a pair and you can happily stay together instead.
A Fast Payoff
Few partner dances reward a first-timer as quickly as the bachata basic. You spend most of lesson one moving to music, not muttering counts to yourself in the mirror.
A Scene That's Actually Here
Reading's Latin nights are real, not a maybe — Salsa Bachata Social Club's socials give your new steps somewhere to go the moment your confidence catches up.
An Easy Room
The beginner class is light company: plenty of laughing, no judgement, and week to week the genuine first-timers usually outnumber everyone else on the floor.
Your Bachata Journey
From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.
The Basic Lands
Your First Steps
The side basic, the count and one calm under-arm turn, aimed at ease and rhythm well before anyone so much as mentions polish.
Kit for Night One
Clothes you can move in and a smooth-soled shoe that lets you pivot — grippy trainers turn every single turn into a small battle.
Two Become One Dance
Reading the Lead
What your partner is asking through the connection begins to come across without words, so a rotation of new faces feels far less like guessing.
The Hip Beds In
The rolling hip motion finally settles, and what was a flat sidestep-with-a-tap starts to genuinely look and feel like bachata.
Hearing the Song
Playing the Music
Picking your moment to turn or to stay simple, and catching the guitar's accents as they land rather than ploughing straight past them.
Joining It Up
Linking figures into flowing runs that last a whole track, top to tail, without the sequence unravelling on you halfway through.
Out on the Social Floor
Dancing With Strangers
Comfortable partnering someone you met two minutes earlier, no longer counting under your breath the entire length of the song.
Where It Goes Next
We point you at Reading's Latin socials so your new steps have somewhere real to keep going once class is not enough.
Bachata in Reading FAQ
Everything you need to know before your first class.
Do I have to bring a partner to bachata in Reading? +
No. Everybody swaps around the room for the full hour, so turning up on your own is completely normal — a good share of the regulars started exactly that way. If you would rather stay with the person you came in with, that is fine too.
I have never danced a step — will I keep up? +
Easily. Bachata is deliberately slow, and lesson one is mostly the side basic and a soft hip roll. Nobody is racing, and complete beginners make up most of the starter floor rather than the odd exception.
Where in Reading are the bachata classes held? +
Our beginner rooms are in the town centre near Friar Street, a short walk from Reading station, with the exact studio confirmed when you book. Everything sits inside the compact centre, so arriving by train is straightforward.
How much does a bachata class cost in Reading? +
Eight pounds a session, paid on the night — no membership, no contract, no joining fee. Turn up and pay as you go. Block-booking discounts arrive once the weekly schedule settles at your nearest studio.
What should I wear, and what about shoes? +
Comfortable clothes you can move freely in, and a shoe with a smooth sole so you can pivot cleanly. Trainers with a lot of grip fight you on every turn, so leave those at home once you are past the first week.
Is bachata harder than salsa to pick up? +
Most people find it easier at the start. Salsa moves quickly and packs in turns; bachata keeps a steady four-count and a simple side-step, which is why we often point nervous beginners here before salsa.
Is there a real Latin scene in Reading to dance in? +
There is. Salsa Bachata Social Club runs courses and social nights around Chatham Street and the town centre, so once your basics are steady you have genuine floors to enjoy. Your teacher will tell you which nights suit a newcomer.
Can I come with my own partner and stay paired up? +
Of course. The rotation is there to help solo dancers, not to split couples up — you are welcome to work together the whole class if you prefer. Plenty of couples book in to prepare for a wedding or a holiday.
What is the hip movement actually doing? +
It is a relaxed roll that follows the step, not a forced wiggle. We build it slowly on top of footwork you already own, so it reads as natural rather than something bolted on. It is the last layer, not the first hurdle.
