Class Structure

Beginners Class — 60 Minutes

First 10 min

Loosen & Groove

Shoulder isolations, gentle body waves and a travelling side-step warm the joints and settle you into bachata's unhurried four-count pulse.

10–25 min

The Base Step

Side-to-side timing, the tap on the four and quarter turns — the small repeating engine sitting underneath every pattern you will ever dance.

25–40 min

Leading & Following

Reading a frame instead of memorising choreography: how a lead offers a turn and how a follow answers, swapping roles so both make sense.

40–52 min

Joining It Up

Threading turns, a body roll and a change of place into one continuous phrase you could drop straight onto a social floor.

52–60 min

Open Floor & Stretch

A few tracks of free dancing with rotating partners, then a calf-and-hip stretch to finish the hour.

About Bachata Classes in Canterbury

Bachata came out of the Dominican Republic as a guitar-led, close-hold dance built on four walking beats and a tap — slow enough to feel, expressive enough to keep you hooked. Our Canterbury classes teach it brick by brick, from the plain base step through turns, musical accents and the softer sensual styling that has since spread across Europe, so you leave able to actually dance rather than recite a routine.

Canterbury's Latin scene is small but real. Salsa-Asi has long run Latin nights over at Westgate Hall, and there is a friendly social crowd if you know where to look — but a structured, week-by-week bachata course pitched at genuine beginners has been thin on the ground. That is the gap we fill, from a studio in the city centre a short walk from the Westgate and the High Street, drawing dancers in from St Dunstan's, Wincheap, the University of Kent and Christ Church, and from the villages out along the Stour valley. Worth saying plainly: Ceroc Canterbury runs modern jive, which is a different dance again — good fun, but not bachata.

You never need to bring a partner — we rotate everyone through the room each session, which is how you learn to lead or follow anybody rather than one familiar face. Ordinary clothes are fine to start; a smooth-soled shoe helps once you are turning more.

Why Choose Bachata in Canterbury?

Turn Up Solo

We rotate partners the whole way through, so a single booking still means an hour of dancing with the whole room — come alone or drag a friend along.

Connection You Can Feel

Bachata is a conversation held through the hands and frame; learning to send and receive that signal sharpens how you read people well beyond the studio.

Portable Anywhere

The base step travels — once it is in your body you have a floor waiting in every city and on every Latin holiday, from a Kent social to a beach bar abroad.

Hearing the Song

We pull apart the guitar, the bongo and the accent so you stop counting and start answering the music — the moment steps turn into phrasing.

Your Bachata Journey

From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.

1

Finding the Four

In Your First Weeks

The base step, a clean right turn, and learning to actually hear the one-two-three-tap under the melody. Getting comfortable being in a hold with a stranger.

What to Wear

Something you can move in and shoes with a smooth sole — trainers with heavy grip fight you on turns. Socks are fine for a first try.

2

Adding Colour

A Few Weeks In

Cross-body leads, inside turns and the first body waves. You begin to feel where traditional Dominican styling ends and sensual bachata begins.

Everyone in the Room

By now you have partnered every regular at least once — each one teaches your frame something a mirror never could.

3

Flowing

Building Phrases

Stitching turns, a dip and level changes into combinations, then improvising inside them instead of waiting for the next counted move.

Your First Social

Confident enough to head to a Latin night — the patterns you drilled start arriving on their own on a crowded floor.

4

Dancing, Not Stepping

Going Further

Shadow position, musical breaks and longer sensual sequences — dancing a story with a partner rather than surviving the song.

Where Next

Pair it with salsa or tango, chase down socials and festivals, or gather friends for a one-off Latin group session.

Bachata in Canterbury FAQ

Everything you need to know before your first class.

What actually is bachata? +

A partner dance from the Dominican Republic, danced to a four-beat guitar rhythm with a tap on the fourth count. It mixes grounded side-steps and turns with body movement and a close, responsive hold. The modern sensual strand adds waves and dips on top of the traditional footwork.

Do I need to bring a partner? +

No, and most people don't. We rotate partners through every class, so you practise leading or following with lots of different people — which is exactly what builds a frame that works with anyone. Turning up on your own is completely normal here.

Isn't bachata just salsa? +

No — different rhythm, different feel. Salsa is quicker, more linear and counted in eights around a three-step; bachata is slower, heavier in the hips and built on four. Plenty of people dance both. And note that Ceroc Canterbury is modern jive, a separate dance again, not salsa or bachata.

How much is a class in Canterbury? +

£8 a session, paid on the door, drop-in — no membership and no joining fee. Once the weekly timetable settles we will add block-booking options, but you never have to commit to more than the class in front of you.

Where in Canterbury do you meet? +

A city-centre studio a few minutes' walk from the Westgate and the High Street, easy to reach on foot from either Canterbury West or Canterbury East. We confirm the exact address when you register your interest.

What should I wear? +

Comfortable clothes you can move and sweat a little in, and a shoe with a smooth sole so you can pivot — avoid grippy trainers. Clean socks do the job for a first visit.

I've genuinely never danced. Is that OK? +

That is exactly who the beginners class is built for. We start from a single side-step and add one idea a week; most of the room walked in never having danced in a hold before.

What music will we dance to? +

A spread of traditional Dominican bachata, modern remixes and bachata-pop crossovers — artists in the Romeo Santos, Prince Royce and Aventura mould, plus sensual reworkings of songs you already know.

Do you teach private bachata lessons? +

Yes — one-to-one or couple sessions can be arranged around your goals and schedule, handy before a holiday or a specific event. Get in touch and we will sort timing and pricing.
