Class Structure
Beginners Class — 60 Minutes
First shapes
Weight shifts and the four-count on your own two feet — no hands held yet, no one watching, just the pattern settling in while the playlist warms up.
Two people, one pulse
Into hold with a partner and straight into rotation, so the room mixes from the first song and nobody spends the hour stuck with their own nerves.
This week's move
A single new figure taught in slow motion, then at half tempo, then to music — one turn or one styling detail, never a firehose of choreography.
Stringing it together
The new figure gets stitched to the ones the room already knows, danced with three or four different partners so it works with everybody, not just one.
Just dancing
The lights of the lesson come down and the last songs are simply danced — the part of the hour that quietly turns students into social dancers.
About Bachata Classes in Cambridge
Bachata comes from the Dominican Republic and moves at the speed of a good conversation: a step to the side, a step back, a soft tap, repeat. In our Cambridge classes that simplicity is the whole point — you can be genuinely dancing it, with another human being, inside your first hour.
The class runs on rotation, so arriving alone is completely normal here — most of the room does. What you practise is less a set of steps than a way of listening through your hands: a skill that transfers to every partner dance you ever try afterwards, and to Cambridge's own Latin social nights once you have a few weeks behind you.
£8 a class, pay as you go, and the first one tells you everything.

Why Choose Bachata in Cambridge?
Come alone, dance with everyone
Rotation is built into the format — solo arrivals are the majority, and by the end of the hour you will have danced with most of the room.
One figure a week
Each session adds exactly one new element to your repertoire. Slow accumulation beats fast forgetting, and the basic never stops being the star.
A door to the social scene
Cambridge has real Latin nights on its calendar. These classes are the unpressured place to build the confidence to walk into them.
£8, no strings
Every class is £8, paid as you go — no term fees, no memberships, no punch cards. Miss a fortnight and walk back in at the same price.
Your Bachata Journey
From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.
The basic becomes yours
Feet on autopilot
The side-step-tap pattern stops needing thought — your legs keep the count while your attention moves up to your partner.
Hands that talk
You learn what a clear lead or a responsive follow actually feels like, taught explicitly rather than left to luck.
A repertoire assembles
Turns, then travel
Inside turns, outside turns and simple travelling steps join the basic one week at a time, each one drilled with multiple partners.
Musicality creeps in
You start hearing the bongo's tap where your tap goes — the moment bachata stops being counting and starts being music.
Social-floor ready
Improvising, not reciting
Figures get chosen in the moment to match the song and the partner — the real skill of social dancing, practised on purpose.
First night out
Classmates tend to make their first trip to a Latin social together, which is exactly how it should be done — as a room, not a rescue mission.
Style and depth
Body movement
Waves, isolations and the closer sensual-style connection arrive once the foundations are solid — added like seasoning, never forced early.
Your bachata
Two dancers with the same figures never look alike. This is the stage where what you dance becomes recognisably yours.
Bachata in Cambridge FAQ
Everything you need to know before your first class.
Where in Cambridge will the bachata class meet? +
At a central studio between Market Square and Parker's Piece, an easy walk or cycle from anywhere in the middle of town. The exact address is confirmed when you book your place.
How much is a bachata class in Cambridge? +
Every class is £8, paid as you go — no term fees, no memberships, no punch cards. You pay for the classes you attend and nothing else.
Do I need to bring a partner? +
No — and most people don't. The class rotates partners throughout the hour, so solo dancers are the normal case, and couples who'd rather not rotate can simply say so and stay together.
I have never danced anything. Is that a problem? +
It's the expected starting point. The basic step is four beats and a tap; if you can walk to music you can dance it within the first ten minutes, and everything else is layered on gradually from there.
I've done a bit of salsa — will bachata feel familiar? +
Familiar but noticeably calmer. Bachata sits at a slower tempo with a closer, smoother feel, and salsa dancers usually find the timing easy while enjoying having room to breathe. Plenty of people keep both going.
What should I wear on my feet? +
Clean indoor shoes that let you pivot — smooth-soled trainers, flats or low heels all work. Grippy running shoes fight the floor, and nothing else about your outfit matters beyond being comfortable.
What music will we dance to? +
Real bachata — from traditional Dominican guitar tracks to the modern and sensual remixes you'll hear at Latin nights, so the music in class matches the music you'll actually go out and dance to.
Who actually comes to these classes? +
A genuine cross-section — students, researchers, people who work in town, people who've lived in Cambridge for decades. Ages range from twenties to sixties and the rotation means everyone dances with everyone.
When do Cambridge bachata classes start? +
The Cambridge timetable is opening now — register your interest through the contact page or call 07759 656300, and you'll be first to hear the confirmed day, time and studio for the bachata slot.
