Class Structure
Beginners Class — 60 Minutes
Warm Up & The Wall
We ease in with a light warm-up, then run through what the lines are and what "the wall" means — the way the whole room points one direction — so nothing feels mysterious once we start moving.
The Building Blocks
Then each ingredient gets practised by itself — the shuffle, the grapevine, the kick-ball-change — and once they are yours you realise every routine is simply those same pieces shuffled into a new order.
Grow The Sequence
Those blocks then get woven into the evening's complete dance, delivered one wall at a time and run round gently, again and again, until it settles into place.
Round The Corner
Next we add the quarter- and half-turns that pivot the dance around to face a different wall — usually the exact point where it stops being steps and becomes an actual routine.
Take It From The Top
Finally the completed dance goes to the track, danced together two or three times over, before we finish on a relaxed stretch to bring everyone back down.
About Line Dancing Classes in Gloucester
A quick bit of honesty up front: no single long-running weekly line-dance club has ever really taken root in Gloucester, so rather than pretend otherwise, we just run the classes properly ourselves. Our Gloucester line dance sessions are coach-led and built around your own dates — out of a confirmed city-centre studio near the Cross, or brought to a room or hall wherever you happen to be, anywhere across the city and the wider county. Honestly, it is the easiest possible on-ramp into dancing, and that comes down to one simple fact: not a single person in the room needs a partner.
The style is put together from a modest set of recurring steps — a grapevine, a shuffle, a turn, a kick-ball-change — arranged into a pattern the entire room dances simultaneously, all aimed the same way in neat rows. Learn that handful of moves and you could walk onto pretty much any line-dance floor in Britain and join straight in. And it long ago stopped being purely country: we're just as content setting a dance to pop, soul or a recent chart hit as to a vintage honky-tonk track, so there is something on the playlist for everyone present.
It truly makes no difference if you are sure you have two left feet, could not clap in time to save your life, or have not set foot on a dancefloor since a wedding years ago. There is no partner leaning on you and no hand to hold — you simply follow the row, let the caller talk you through each move, and let plain repetition do the rest. A single class costs £8, handed over on the day with no signature required, which makes it about the most welcoming, sociable way to spend an evening anywhere in the county.

Why Choose Line Dancing in Gloucester?
Going Solo Is Fine
You are dancing as part of the row but entirely on your own steam — come alone, bring one friend or roll up with a dozen, and there is never an odd-one-out.
A Workout For The Head
Memorising and then recalling one dance after another gives your brain a real going-over, and there is a solid body of research connecting this kind of dancing to sharper cognitive health.
We Travel To You
There is no permanent weekly hall you have to make your way over to — we either lay on a central studio or drive the class out to somewhere handy for you, right across the county.
Country Meets Chart
This is nowhere near wall-to-wall honky-tonk — plenty of the dances ride on pop, soul or a current chart hit, which keeps everybody in the room happy whatever they normally listen to.
Your Line Dancing Journey
From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.
The Grapevine & The Wall
Your First Grapevine
In that first hour you pick up the grapevine along with what "the wall" actually means — and remarkably, those two ideas alone open the door to a huge chunk of the line-dance repertoire.
Ride The Line
There is nothing you have to commit to memory by yourself — you just mirror the caller and whoever is next to you, and honestly the steps land far sooner than you would expect.
A Dance, Start To Finish
One Complete Routine
Those separate steps come together as your first full beginner dance — one you can hold from top to bottom while an actual song plays underneath.
Facing New Walls
The quarter-turns that rotate everyone toward a new wall start to feel natural, and that is usually the moment the whole thing reads as a proper dance rather than a drill.
A Wider Repertoire
Dances Stack Up
Before long you have a small stack of dances under your belt, and since they all draw on that shared handful of steps, picking up the next takes less time each round.
Reading The Caller
The names of the steps begin registering as they are shouted, which means an unfamiliar dance becomes something you can join purely off the cues, having never watched it before.
Any Floor Will Do
Join In Anywhere
Once that common set of steps is properly in you, dropping into a line-dance evening in a strange town and keeping up is entirely doable.
The Weekly Fixture
Plenty of our regulars end up treating it as the best hour of their week — familiar faces, a new dance to get your teeth into, week in and week out.
Line Dancing in Gloucester FAQ
Everything you need to know before your first class.
Do I really not need a partner? +
Genuinely, no. That freedom is the best part of the whole thing — a room full of people dance matching steps in rows, everyone pointed one direction, so showing up by yourself is no obstacle at all.
Is there a regular weekly line-dance club in Gloucester? +
The honest answer is no — nothing like a permanent weekly line-dance club has established itself here. That's exactly why we host coach-led sessions of our own, whether from a city-centre studio or out at a venue close to you somewhere in the county.
Do I need any experience or a sense of rhythm? +
You need neither. Because the steps keep repeating, the caller describes every move aloud, and the dancers either side carry you with them, a total newcomer with no rhythm copes fine — it is about the most forgiving way there is to begin dancing.
Is it only country music? +
Definitely not. Yes, we do the vintage country and honky-tonk numbers, but they sit next to routines built around pop, soul or whatever is high in the charts right now, so nobody's taste gets left out.
What should I wear? +
Something comfy to move in, and footwear with a smooth-ish sole that lets your foot rotate — chunky, grippy trainers tend to stick just as you go to turn. Cowboy boots are more than welcome but absolutely not compulsory.
How much is a class? +
Each class runs to a flat £8, handed over on the day and needing no signature. Since we plan everything one-to-one with you, there are never any termly charges or memberships to settle in advance.
Where do classes happen and how do I get there? +
Classes run either from a confirmed Gloucester studio or from a venue handy for you out in the county. There is no tram in the city; the railway station lies east of the main shopping streets while the bus station is bang central, so a town-centre class is straightforward to reach — and full directions arrive when you book.
Is line dancing good exercise? +
Very much so. Sixty minutes of back-to-back dances keeps you on the move throughout, lifts your pulse without ever feeling punishing, and — thanks to all the sequence-remembering — quietly exercises the brain at the same time.
Can we book a group session? +
Happy to. It makes a superb standalone booking for a hen party, a milestone birthday or a work night out, precisely because complete beginners can pile in alongside everyone else — drop us a headcount and roughly where in Gloucester you are, and we will sort it.
