Grounded Warm-Up
Breath-led floor sequences, spinal articulation and slow weight-shifts that wake the body from the ground. We start low and quiet, finding the link between breath and movement before anything travels.
Release & Weight
Working the core principles - giving in to gravity, rebounding out of it, spirals and suspensions. The warehouse-and-lock rhythm of the Docks is a fair image: load the weight, let it drop, catch the swing.
Travelling Sequences
Phrases that cross the room using turns, tilts, level changes and floor transitions - building physical vocabulary and the plain courage to take up space.
Choreography & Improvisation
Set material or a structured improvisation task exploring intention and dynamics. We treat improvisation as composition in real time, never as filler.
Stillness & Reflection
Long stretches, unhurried breath and a moment of quiet. Contemporary asks for presence; the close of class deliberately honours it.
About Contemporary Classes in Gloucester
Contemporary dance sets aside the fixed lines of ballet to chase movement led by breath, weight and momentum. Our Gloucester classes draw on release technique and improvisation to build a body that can fall and recover, spiral and suspend, and move with as much feeling as force. Expect floor work, expect to sweat, and expect to surprise yourself with what your body already quietly knows how to do.
It helps to carry a picture in your head, and Gloucester hands you two good ones. Down at the historic Docks - Britain's most inland Victorian port - cargo once swung between warehouse and lock on a rhythm of load, release and catch; that transfer of weight is precisely what a contemporary phrase does. Up at the Cathedral, the Great Cloister holds the earliest fan vaulting in the world, its ribs fanning into a ceiling of pure pattern - the sort of spatial geometry choreography borrows without ever naming it.
The city has genuine contemporary pedigree, too: The Company Dance Academy trains young Gloucester dancers in the form here to a high standard, so the appetite for serious movement is already in the water. Our adult class opens that same door to everyone else - the returner who studied years ago and misses it, and the outright beginner who has only ever been curious. No flexibility, no prior training and no particular body type required. Wear fitted clothes and dance barefoot or in grip socks.

Why Choose Contemporary in Gloucester?
Expressive Freedom
Contemporary hands you permission to move the way your body actually wants to. There is rigorous technique underneath, but the destination is honest, personal expression rather than one fixed shape.
Whole-Body Strength
Floor work, suspensions and controlled falls build a deep, functional strength and mobility - core, spine and joints - that a gym machine simply cannot touch.
A Moving Meditation
Breath-led work and improvisation quiet the mind while the body labours. Many members describe class as the single hour a week their head fully switches off.
Range For Any Dancer
If you train ballet, jazz or commercial, contemporary teaches you to use weight and release - unlocking dynamics and floor skills the other styles rarely ever reach.
Your Contemporary Journey
From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.
Ground & Breath
Getting Started
The basics of floor work - rolling, spiralling and shifting weight - and using breath to initiate movement. You learn the give-and-take between gravity and release that everything else grows out of.
What to Wear
Fitted leggings and a close top, bare feet or grip socks, hair tied back. Nothing baggy - the instructor needs to read your alignment while you are down on the floor.
Building Vocabulary
Developing Technique
Contractions, suspensions and fall-and-recovery, plus travelling phrases with turns and level changes. You start to feel how momentum, rather than muscle, is doing the moving.
Improvisation
Guided tasks - responding to an image, a texture or another dancer - that grow your creative confidence and teach you to move fluently without a script.
Expressive Range
Longer Phrases
Extended material joining floor, standing work and jumps, exploring the full dynamic scale from heavy to light, bound to free. Your stamina and your recall step up together.
Making Movement
Building short phrases of your own and meeting the choreographic tools - motif, canon, development - that shape raw movement into something with an argument.
Artist & Mover
Performance & Voice
Assured enough to perform, compose and interpret. Optional showcases, collaborative pieces and the tools to keep developing as an independent mover in your own right.
Where Next
Add ballet for line and control, seek out contact-improvisation workshops, or take up performance chances within Gloucester's own dance community.
Contemporary in Gloucester FAQ
Everything you need to know before your first class.
What is contemporary dance? +
A broad, modern movement form that grew out of and against ballet from the mid-twentieth century onward. It leans on breath, floor work, the release of tension and fall-and-recovery, pulling from Graham, Cunningham, Limon and release-based approaches into one expressive language.
Is it suitable for complete beginners? +
Absolutely. The class is layered for mixed levels with clear breakdowns and options for every exercise. A good number of our regulars had never danced a step before they first walked in.
How is contemporary different from modern dance? +
They overlap heavily. 'Modern' points to the specific early-twentieth-century codified techniques - Graham, Cunningham, Limon; 'contemporary' is the wider, current umbrella that also takes in release and post-modern approaches. In an adult class the labels matter far less than the moving.
Do I need to be flexible? +
No. Flexibility is a by-product of the practice, never a prerequisite for it. Contemporary is about using the range you already have with intelligence and control, not forcing yourself into extreme positions.
Will there be floor work every week? +
Most classes include some, because it is central to the style. We build the strength and technique gradually so getting down to and up from the floor stays safe and eventually feels fluid.
What should I wear? +
Fitted, comfortable clothes - leggings and a close top - and bare feet or grip socks. Skip anything loose that hides your alignment. Bring water and a layer to pull on for the cool-down.
How much are contemporary classes in Gloucester? +
£8 a session on a drop-in basis, paid each week with no contract. We will add block options once the regular timetable has properly settled.
Where in Gloucester do you run the class? +
A central studio with a sprung or semi-sprung floor suitable for jumps and floor work - within walking distance of the bus station. The exact address is confirmed when you register.
Does contemporary go well with other styles? +
Superbly. It feeds ballet, jazz and commercial by adding weight, release and floor craft, and they feed it back line and precision. Plenty of dancers train across several and find each one improves the rest.
