Class Structure
Beginners Class — 60 Minutes
Posture and poise
Before any steps we set the frame — chest lifted, shoulders down, weight forward over the balls of the feet — because ballroom lives or dies on carriage.
Walking together
Practise the basic travelling walks and the box step solo, then in a light hold, so partners learn to move as one unit rather than tug at each other.
One dance in focus
Pick a dance for the week — often the waltz — and build its signature rise and fall until the up-down swing feels natural.
Turning the corners
Learn to steer the hold around the room and negotiate a corner, the moment most beginners fear and quickly stop fearing.
Dance it through
Run the routine corner to corner with music, so you leave having circled the floor as a proper couple.
About Ballroom Classes in Gloucester
Ballroom is the elegant end of partner dancing — waltz, quickstep, foxtrot and their cousins, danced in a shared upright hold that travels around the room in one direction. The Saturday-night television version can look dauntingly polished, but every couple on that floor began with the same three things we teach first: how to stand, how to hold, and how to walk in time together. Get those and the rest is just vocabulary.
Gloucester has a real ballroom-and-Latin pulse of its own. Elaine's Dancing has taught couples across the Gloucester area for years, and its presence is a good sign that appetite for waltz and cha-cha runs deep locally — we mention it only to show the scene is alive, not as a partner of ours, and we share none of their contact details. Our own beginner class is a separate, no-strings way to try the same dances at a flat £8.
The town is dotted with the kind of upright civic and church halls ballroom was made for, and the Guildhall on Eastgate Street sits at the heart of Gloucester's social calendar. You are welcome to come as a couple or entirely on your own — we rotate so single dancers get plenty of practice.

Why Choose Ballroom in Gloucester?
Lead and follow, clearly
We teach both roles as a conversation, not a struggle, so the hold feels supportive from your very first walk.
Rotate or bring a pair
Come with your partner or on your own — we swap dancers so nobody sits out and everyone gets enough repetitions.
Made for events
A confident waltz or foxtrot pays off at weddings, anniversaries and any night the floor opens up.
Flat £8 drop-in
One price on the night — no term contract, no couples package, just turn up and dance.
Your Ballroom Journey
From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.
Frame and footing
A hold that holds
You build the upright frame and connection point that makes leading and following possible.
The box step
The reliable square pattern under so many ballroom dances becomes second nature early on.
Your first dance
Waltz swing
Rise and fall turns the box into a gliding, breathing waltz that actually travels.
Timing as a pair
You stop counting separately and start feeling one shared rhythm through the hold.
Around the room
Steering and corners
You learn to navigate the floor, turn the corners and give way to other couples with ease.
A second dance
A quickstep or a foxtrot joins the waltz, and you start to feel the family resemblance.
Ready for the floor
Linking figures
Separate steps join into a routine you can dance smoothly from start to finish.
Confidence to go out
You can take to any social or wedding floor knowing your hold, your timing and a dance or two.
Ballroom in Gloucester FAQ
Everything you need to know before your first class.
Do I need a dance partner to come? +
No. Plenty of people join solo and we rotate partners through the class so you always have someone to dance with. You are equally welcome to come as an established couple.
I have two left feet — is ballroom realistic for me? +
Yes. We start with posture and a single walk before any pattern, and break each dance into small pieces. The televised polish is just many beginners' first steps repeated until they became easy.
What does a class cost? +
A flat £8 per session, paid on the night. No term block, no membership and no couples' package to sign — you pay only for the classes you attend.
What should I wear on my feet? +
Smooth-soled shoes that stay on and let you pivot are ideal — a low court shoe or a leather-soled shoe works well. Avoid trainers with grippy rubber that catches on the floor.
Where are the ballroom classes in Gloucester? +
In a central room between Eastgate and Westgate, with a second space over on the Quays side by the Docks. The exact venue for your booking is confirmed when you reserve a place.
How do I get there and park the car? +
The bus station is central among the shops and the railway station is a short walk east of the centre. Central car parks are within a few minutes' walk; there is no tram in Gloucester. On Kingsholm match evenings, allow extra time north of the centre.
Which dances will I actually learn? +
Beginners focus on the waltz first for its clear rise and fall, then meet the quickstep and foxtrot. Once the hold and timing are solid, adding new dances gets much quicker.
Is there a ballroom scene locally to enjoy? +
There is genuine appetite for it — established teachers like Elaine's Dancing have long served the Gloucester area, a sign the dances are loved here. We are independent of them and simply teach our own beginner-friendly class.
How do I book? +
Fill in the enquiry form on this page with your name and a contact detail, and we will get back to you within one working day with the next beginner date, the venue and directions.
