Class Structure
Beginners Class — 60 Minutes
Warming at the barre
Facing the barre for pliés and rises, we wake up ankles, knees and hips and set the alignment the rest of the hour depends on.
Building the vocabulary
Tendus, dégagés and a slow rond de jambe lay down the basic shapes and the turnout everything else is built from.
Away from the wood
We step into the centre for port de bras and simple balances — holding a clean line with nothing to lean on is where the work really shows.
Moving through space
Soft chassés and a first gentle adage carry you across the floor, so ballet becomes something travelling rather than something static.
Révérence
The traditional révérence to close — a bow, a long stretch and a slow breath for a proper, unhurried finish.
About Ballet Classes in Oxford
There is a reason ballet has outlasted four centuries of fashion: it is a complete, exacting technique with its own French vocabulary — plié, tendu, relevé — that you learn in your body rather than off a page. It builds turnout from the hip, a spine that is strong and soft at once, and the long, unforced line that makes a simple pose look like it costs nothing. Our ballet classes in Oxford are for adults who want that craft without a syllabus hanging over it.
Oxford is not short of ballet — the city keeps long-running schools and busy weekly timetables, and much of that provision is rightly built around children, grades and exams. A relaxed adult beginners' barre, with no eight-year-olds in the mirror and nothing to pass at the end, is the harder thing to find.
That is exactly what this is: an unhurried weekly hour for grown-up beginners and returners, taught by professional dancers who care more about your alignment than your extension. Classes run centrally near George Street and on the East Oxford side, and we teach across Oxford and Oxfordshire at £8 a session.

Why Choose Ballet in Oxford?
Posture you keep
Barre work quietly resets how you stand and hold yourself; it is the change most adults notice first, well before any turns arrive.
Strength, low impact
Turnout and deep core control build gradually and gently, which is why ballet suits total beginners and stiff returners alike.
No exams, no grades
Nothing to sit, nothing to pass. You come for the technique and the quiet focus, not a certificate at the end.
An eye for line
Ballet trains you to see and shape a clean line — the same care for poise you would find in the Ashmolean's galleries a few streets away.
Your Ballet Journey
From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.
The early weeks
Learning to stand still
The first classes feel deceptively quiet: where your weight sits, a soft plié, where the arms live. It is the ground the whole art stands on.
Kit is minimal
Fitted clothes you can move in, socks or soft ballet slippers, hair tied back. A leotard is entirely optional.
At home on the barre
The words stick
Tendu, frappé and rond de jambe stop sounding foreign and become things your feet simply do when they are called.
Honest turnout
You open from the hip over months rather than forcing the feet, which is how ankles and knees stay happy.
Into the centre
Balance, unaided
Leaving the barre to hold a line and a calm arm with nothing to grip is the real leap — and the moment ballet clicks.
First turns
A quarter-turn grows into a prepared pirouette, and with it the spotting and steadiness that improve everything else you dance.
Actually dancing
Steps become phrases
Short enchaînements string the vocabulary together until it reads as dancing, not drilling.
Where it leads
A few go on to tap, jazz or contemporary; many just keep the weekly hour for the calm of it. There is no wrong direction.
Ballet in Oxford FAQ
Everything you need to know before your first class.
Am I too old or too stiff to start ballet? +
No. Adult beginners are the whole point of this class. Flexibility comes from training, not before it, and we build everything slowly to protect your joints.
Will there be exams or a show at the end? +
Never. These are non-graded adult classes with no syllabus and no compulsory performance. You come for the technique and the calm.
How much is a class? +
£8 a session, paid as you go — no term fee, no membership and no contract.
Do I need ballet shoes for my first class? +
No. For a first class, bare feet or socks with grip are absolutely fine. If you carry on, soft ballet slippers are an inexpensive next step.
What should I wear? +
Something fitted enough to show your line — leggings and a top work well — plus socks or ballet slippers and your hair tied back. Leotards are optional.
Is this part of one of Oxford's existing ballet schools? +
No — our adult class is run independently by Dance Centre UK, alongside a city ballet scene we're glad exists. If you're after children's grades and exams, Oxford has schools that do that brilliantly; this class is the adult, no-exams strand.
Will ballet really help my posture and core? +
Yes — it is one of the most common reasons adults walk in. Barre work targets the deep postural muscles and your alignment directly, and because it is low-impact you feel the strength without the strain. Most people notice they are standing taller within a few weeks.
Can I come with a friend? +
Of course. Bring someone along to a class, or ask about a private beginner session for a group anywhere across Oxford and Oxfordshire.
How often should I come to see progress? +
A weekly class is enough to keep improving over a few months; showing up regularly matters far more than pushing hard once.
