Class Structure

Beginners Class — 60 Minutes

7:00

Waking the body up

Slow hip circles, rib slides and shoulder rolls warm the specific muscles belly dance leans on and build the body awareness it all starts from.

7:15

One move at a time

Hip drops, lifts, shimmies and figure eights, taught in isolation with clear mechanics so you feel exactly where each movement lives.

7:35

Joining the dots

We link a few movements into a short flowing phrase set to Middle Eastern or fusion music, working on smooth transitions.

7:50

Arms, hands and eyes

Adding arm lines, soft hand flourishes and level changes turns a set of steps into something expressive and unmistakably yours.

8:00

Run it and stretch

A full run-through with the music, then long stretches for the hips, spine and shoulders to finish.

About Belly Dance Classes in Oxford

Belly dance is a dance of the middle of the body — hips, ribs and torso moving in slow circles, sharp accents and the fluttering shimmy that gives it its name. Rooted in Middle Eastern and North African tradition, it is built on isolation: teaching one part of you to move while the rest stays calm. Our belly dance classes in Oxford take that apart gently, drilling each movement on its own before layering them into something that flows.

It is a style that has always felt at home in East Oxford, where the Cowley Road's mix of communities, music and food keeps the appetite for it alive. Our room is an easy, welcoming one — no performance background needed and no particular body type required — just a weekly hour to learn the technique properly and enjoy how good it feels to move this way.

Classes are £8 on the night, with nothing to sign up to, and we teach across Oxford and Oxfordshire, from Cowley and Headington out to Witney and Abingdon. Belly dance is famously low-impact and forgiving, which is exactly why it suits absolute beginners, returners and every age in a seventeen-to-seventy-five room.

Your Belly Dance Journey

From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.

01

The first weeks

Finding the isolations

Early on it is all about teaching your hips and ribs to move on their own — odd at first, then oddly satisfying as it clicks.

What to wear

Leggings or a skirt you can move in and bare feet or soft shoes; many people tie a scarf on the hips so they can see the movement.

02

Building technique

The vocabulary grows

Drops, shimmies and figure eights stop being separate tricks and start feeling like a language your body knows.

Layering

You begin combining a hip movement and an arm line at the same time — the point where it starts to look like belly dance.

03

Making it flow

Short phrases

Movements string into flowing sequences set to music, with the transitions that carry you smoothly from one into the next.

Your own style

Expression, hands and gaze get added in, and the same steps start to look different on everyone — which is exactly the idea.

04

Dancing it fully

A whole routine

You put the layers together into a complete little dance you can perform for the room, or just for the joy of it.

Where it leads

Some carry on into fusion or performance troupes; many simply keep the weekly hour as their own. Both are wins.

Belly Dance in Oxford FAQ

Everything you need to know before your first class.

Do I need any dance experience? +

None at all. This is a beginners' class that starts from the very first hip circle, so complete first-timers are exactly who it is for.

Is belly dance suitable for my body and age? +

Yes — genuinely. Belly dance grew up celebrating movement in real bodies of every shape and age, and our room runs from seventeen to seventy-five. It is low-impact, with no jumping or floor work, so it is gentle on knees and backs while still giving the core a proper workout.

What should I wear? +

Comfortable clothes you can move and see your hips in — leggings or a skirt with a fitted top. Bare feet or soft slippers are ideal. A hip scarf is fun but never required.

How much is a class? +

£8 per session, paid on the night. No membership, no term fee and no contract.

Do I need a coin belt or a costume? +

No. Come as you are; a jingly hip scarf is a nice extra once you are enjoying it, but nothing is expected and nothing is for sale.

Will it help with fitness and posture? +

Yes — the constant isolation work quietly strengthens the core and back and improves how you carry yourself, without ever feeling like a gym class.

Where in Oxford do classes run? +

Around the central George Street area and on the East Oxford / Cowley Road side, with the exact studio confirmed when you book — always somewhere easy to reach by bus or Park & Ride.

Can I come with friends or book a group? +

Please do. Bring friends along, or ask about a private belly dance session for a birthday or hen do anywhere across Oxford and Oxfordshire.

How often should I come? +

A weekly class is plenty to keep the movements developing. Like most dance, belly dance rewards regular, relaxed practice over occasional bursts.
