Warm-Up and Swagger
We ease in with a gentle warm-up that loosens the hips, shoulders and spine while quietly building the cheeky, confident mood of the class. By the end you are warm, grinning and ready to play a character rather than just learn steps.
The Art of the Tease
We drill the foundations that make burlesque burlesque — the slow reveal, the timing of a glance, a glove peel and a shoulder roll delivered with intention. It is all about control and cheek, and we take it at a pace that has the whole room laughing and loosening up.
A Signature Feature
Each block we add a classic prop or move — a feather-fan flourish, a chair sequence or a shimmy — taught step by step so it feels glamorous rather than daunting. This is the bit that makes the routine feel unmistakably burlesque.
Building the Routine
We stack the pieces into a short, sultry number, repeated in small chunks until it flows and the counts fall away. It is choreographed to flatter every body in the room and to leave plenty of space for personality and a well-timed wink.
Full Run and Strut
We perform the whole routine to music with the attitude turned up, then wind down gently. You finish on a genuine high, standing a little taller, having spent an hour being bold and glamorous with a room full of people cheering you on.
About Burlesque Classes in Oxford
Burlesque is the art of the tease — cabaret glamour built on timing, wit and slow, deliberate control rather than anything explicit. You learn the classic vocabulary of the form: the peel of a glove, the flick of a feather fan, a chair routine, a shimmy and a knowing look held just a beat too long. Nothing has to come off, ever; the whole style is about suggestion, playfulness and the confidence to command a room's attention.
Oxford's after-dark character lives well off the tour-guide route — in the independent bars of Jericho and the mixed, music-loving strip of Cowley Road, where cabaret and variety nights turn up far more often than the postcard image of the city suggests. Our burlesque classes in Oxford take their cue from that grown-up, tongue-in-cheek scene: all wit, wink and glamour, with no famous names borrowed and no particular venue promised — just a warm room and the confidence to own it.
This is one of the most welcoming rooms on the timetable, and it is emphatically judgement-free — every age, shape and level of experience is not only welcome but the whole point. Wear whatever makes you feel good, from leggings to something with a bit of sparkle, and bring a heel if you fancy it, though bare feet or flats are absolutely fine. Every session is a flat £8, paid one class at a time — no membership, no block booking and nothing hidden.

Why Choose Burlesque in Oxford?
Confidence and Body-Positivity
Burlesque celebrates every body exactly as it is, and that message lands fast. Dancers routinely describe leaving class feeling more comfortable in their own skin than they have in years — it is the style's real magic.
Playful Stress-Relief
It is genuinely good fun. Between the cheek, the characters and the laughter, an hour of burlesque is a proper release from a stressful week — you cannot take the day too seriously while flourishing a feather fan.
Poise and Grace
The slow, controlled movement and the emphasis on posture build a real elegance in how you carry yourself. That poise quietly follows you out of the studio and into everyday life.
A Routine of Your Own
You walk away with a glamorous number you can dust off for a night out, a party or a hen do. It is a keepsake skill — cheeky, memorable and always good for a moment in the spotlight.
Your Burlesque Journey
From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.
Finding Your Cheek
Attitude Over Steps
The first weeks are less about complex choreography and more about permission — to strut, pose and play a character. We build the confidence and the classic vocabulary gently, so the glamour feels natural rather than forced.
Wear What You Like
There is no uniform here. Leggings or something with a little sparkle both work, a heel is optional, and bare feet or flats are completely fine. Bring water and whatever makes you feel good.
Learning the Language
Props and Features
You get to grips with the signatures of the style — the feather fan, the glove peel, the chair — and start linking them together with control and timing rather than rushing through them.
Owning the Tease
The timing sharpens: the held look, the slow reveal, the pause that lets the room lean in. This is where dancers really feel the confidence start to build.
Performing With Flair
Full Routines
We take on longer, more expressive numbers with real light and shade, drilled until they feel polished and playful from the first pose to the final flourish.
Your Own Character
You develop a stage persona that is unmistakably yours — glamorous, funny, fierce, whatever fits you — so the same routine reads differently on every dancer in the room.
Taking It Further
A Repertoire to Keep
Regulars build a collection of routines and a confidence that carries well beyond the studio walls. The style has real depth once the cheek and the timing are second nature.
Hen and Group Bookings
Burlesque is one of our most-loved styles for private sessions and hen dos — glamorous, hilarious and hugely confidence-boosting for a group. Tell us the occasion and we will tailor a session to it.
Burlesque in Oxford FAQ
Everything you need to know before your first class.
Do I have to take any clothes off? +
Absolutely not — this is a common worry and the answer is a firm no. Burlesque here is about the tease, the timing and the confidence, all done fully clothed. Props like gloves and fans are as far as any reveal ever goes; the glamour is in the suggestion, not the striptease.
I am not confident or a dancer — is it for me? +
It is genuinely for you. Burlesque is one of the most welcoming, judgement-free rooms we run, and the confidence is built into the class itself. Complete beginners and self-described non-dancers make up most of the room and leave beaming.
What should I wear and bring? +
Whatever makes you feel good — leggings, or something with a bit of sparkle if you fancy it — plus a bottle of water. A heel adds to the glamour but is entirely optional; bare feet or flats are completely fine, especially at first.
Which parts of Oxford do the classes run in? +
Our central sessions gather around George Street and Gloucester Green, with an East Oxford option over towards Cowley Road and Jericho, all confirmed once you book. If it suits your group we come to you right across Oxford and Oxfordshire. We keep to Oxford itself rather than separate towns such as Abingdon, Kidlington, Bicester or Witney.
How much does a class cost? +
Every drop-in is a flat £8, paid one class at a time. There is no membership, no block to buy up front and no contract — just come along on the weeks that suit you.
Is there a certain body type this suits? +
None whatsoever, and that is the heart of it. Burlesque celebrates every body exactly as it is, and the choreography is designed to flatter and empower whoever is in the room, at every age and size.
Will it get me moving physically? +
More than you might think. The controlled posture, the core work and the constant playful movement gently build strength and get the heart going, all wrapped up in something that feels like pure fun rather than exercise.
Am I too old for burlesque? +
Not at all — adult classes run 17 to 75 and the room is a wonderful mix of ages. Burlesque suits every stage of life, and plenty of dancers say they wish they had found it sooner.
Can we book a private group or hen session? +
Yes, and burlesque is one of our most popular choices for it — hen dos and birthdays especially. It is glamorous, hilarious and a real confidence boost for a group. Tell us the occasion and we will shape a session around you.
